Formula DRIFT was on linear TV every year from 2004 to 2019 on G4, ESPN 2, NBC Sports, CBS Sports and SpeedTV in that time frame. Our experience was that it was a net-positive from a legitimacy perspective, but it was so much more costly and without the kind of analytics that you get on digital when streaming took off around 2012-13ish, so after COVID, we decided only to do TV if we could get a live deal and that is what we have now with MavTV, along with digital partners. That said, we never missed a year being on a "big" network from 2004 to 2019. It's not surprising he doesn't know that, as most of our demo does not really watch cable TV.
That’s honestly very interesting keeping the investment in TV. I really wish I would’ve talked about this more with Ryan Sage. Out of curiosity, if the viewership is usually significantly lower on TV and most of the demo is in streaming, why the continuous investment in keeping it on a live tv network? Can we just do another pod? Hahaha there’s so much new things happening.
@@circleofdrift Well, we don't anymore (since 2019) in the same way. Now someone pays us, which has allowed us to invest in more things, i.e.: pod, extra drones, more employees, social content, etc, but the reason we did it so long where we would pay for time and production is there were still sponsors that were interested in it and being aligned with a network. TV is nice if you can get a big network that will pay you to distribute the live content, but generally that comes with exclusivity, so the model we have is we do have a live TV deal, but it is non-exclusive and that allows us to be on digital platforms as well.
@@formuladrift ohhhhhh ok that makes more sense. I read the 2019 part wrong. Haha getting away from the exclusive network stuff seems like it’s paying off way better. I’m stoked to see how the no qualifying is going to be. I have good feelings about🙏🏼
@@circleofdrift Thanks. It's not that we were exclusive and getting paid. We were non-exclusive (still doing streaming), but WE were paying often for the time and the production. That's the difference and the reason for the cost. If we were getting paid to do it, different story.
@@formuladrift I get that. If the moneys there it’ll talk. I think it works out best for the people the way you guys have mapped it out now. Plus seems like streaming is just where the future is anyways
I can’t wait to tell people about these interviews in 10 years. We’re still in America’s golden age of drifting and very fortunate that these types of things are going into digital media to be seen for years to come
Facts bro, everyone acts like drifting is dead in America but we have the biggest collection of cars to choose from in both domestic and import options
Aaron is the United states drifting national treausre. Glad someone with the means was into drifting and sharing the experiences with newer generations. So much detalied information.
That’s your opinion and that’s okay lol I personally really enjoy his wild mind that is nonstop thinking about new ideas and how to evolve drifting!! Every innovator is a little crazy and if you can’t appreciate it then you clearly don’t appreciate things!
That was beautiful Aaron..👏 Drifting is like no other the highs and lows are wild but it's important to see the positive in all of it.. I remember on top of the palms another one of the other media guys when he asked me what I took out of this trip dw7. I told him that it's proven to me even more that anything is possible never in my life did I think I'd end up on a drift week let alone 2 now.. This drift journey of mine started with DW3 at PARC where I knew nothing about drifting just a guy with a camera who loved driving.. Some guy named Chelsea traded me media for a ride in a m3 and I was hooked.. hopefully I can make it to Texas again with you all this year! Love sharing memories with the Drift Week Fam! ❤
Oh yesh almost forgot thank you to all the heroes who helped people that were in a bad spot with engines trans / parts etc. You guys keep people in the game for something that was massively difficult to get to do and complete. Without you guys in the community. Very few of us car guys left... Fuckin sad.
I had a goal to do driftweek but now I have been traveling to different tracks with my drift club across the east coast just street driving to every event, feels more like drift life haha. Need to get a trailer and truck setup sometime then maybe driftweek would make more sense. I think street driving has been holding me back as a driver but it's a ton of fun.
Don’t know who this drifter dude is but Love these keep em coming I’m learning so much 😍 people make the sport! I will be out at Formula Drift - Tirestacks Umbrella girl. See yall there!!
2:01:45 There is indeed no grassroots to speak of in Western Europe except for some wet days. The EU drift week was mostly trailers. Guys in Germany and Netherlands get cars impounded and titles branded for having a hydraulic handbrake whilst sitting in a traffic jam. The "up in smoke thing" met up in Amsterdam yet not a single drift was done. So sadly DW in EU would not be the same :)
True, in eastern Europe it might work with countries like Poland and Russia. In the UK the drifting scene is huge especially with Ireland having the best drivers! Ice drifting in Northern Europe could have a drift week but an ICE only edition. Who knows what the possibilities are🤷🤷🤷
@@circleofdrift it would work as a spur of the moment thing in the most relaxed countries like Poland. It would not work as an organised event like DW USA whatsoever, forget it. The EU one that was done last year , as cool as Axel and Fielding and many of my other friends are on that, was not comparable because it wasn't much road driving. Also in France eco people are protesting at drift events all the time. Axel pulls off a lot but its an uphill battle in Europe and certainly nothing you could repeat 8x like we did in USA. Sadly.
Drift Week 3 was incredible for me even though I got sick with covid the day before the last track (PARC). I wish I would have kept myself in a healthier condition to complete it. Regardless, it was incredible to share the memories with a lot of my good friends.
Aaron come to homestead race way we can't drift legally in south fl imagine us down here in Miami coming to drift week that's atleast a 5k to 10k trip easily
@@JordyX8 I 100% agree with you…..but people bought those tickets…..a lot of people. My friend came out making $350 from that event. I think there were over 30 cars running at Fuel Fest. Most of the drivers that were driving all day came out making money. It was a lot of teenagers that were paying that money to do the ride alongs.
A great question to Aaron would be how do intend to continue to grow the grassroots drift scene even though it grows on its own it only dies for those that have the stacks to travel but what about getting people into drifting that don't have the bank roll offering newbies cars to drift at more beginner events even drift week has changed alot in the sense that everyone has a 500+ hp car in most cases full angle kits there are those few simple people but I feel like the simplicity needs to be more included in these events you know maybe more smaller events even though what your looking to do is drift with everyone your bank roll has always been up there not in the sense of your rich but like the cars that you have more chance then others to drift we can't get 240s anymore but anyone can get a miata and e36 or 46 but it's not simple to stsrt out in those cars in the sport now a days
