      If your partial to Ibanez RG guitars which clearly the duvell is influenced by, you will be a bit put off by how the neck is feels to an Ibanez in comparison.
      Mayones makes exceptional well crafted guitars. But the neck profiles tend to be chunky.
      I had the same reaction that he had with the neck once l finally played one.

    • @MilianMalivukMusic
      @MilianMalivukMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      In this case, because of my habits, it feels like thick equals slow. I really noticed reduced speed in my fingers since I'm used to a 17mm thin Ibanez RG neck.

    • @MetalMike87
      @MetalMike87 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MilianMalivukMusic man, I believe you. It's just that fat neck = slow neck is imho a myth which needs to be busted.
      Size and height of the frets have a much higher impact my own experiece.
      Anyway, as I said, it's just a matter of what anyone become accustomed to.
      There a tons of guitar heroes who play big baseball-bat neck

    • @byronh77
      @byronh77 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      When your fingers are on the shorter side a fat round neck may not be desirable for every player.
      For example, Zack Wylde’s signature les Paul. has a baseball bat for a neck. It’s super chunky and round with a lot of shoulders.
      He’s a phenomenally fast player, so you’re right in that regard. He plays hella fast with a super chunky neck.
      But He’s got rather large hands though . And this is his preference, as a result.
      Which is why l don’t own one. If l ever purchase a les Paul lm going to need a slim 60 neck profile. Which has a thin flat D profile.
      Big super round profiles aren’t always comfortable to play. However the thick necks offer more tone. This is why l suspect the duvells profiles have more shoulders. It’s a flat D profile. But thicker than a wizard 3 neck.

    • @spanneng
      @spanneng 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well, you see, Ibanez starts as copy of American made guitars for Asian market (Japanese) which, I believe, has smaller hands than an average American, which correlates to smaller neck profile. That alone should say much.

    I've played two different Duvells and for the most part I enjoyed playing them however one thing that really detracted from the playability/comfort was that Mayones does not roll their fretboard edges at all. You can see at 2:10 where the fretboard edges are almost still 90 degrees. My Mayones Regius was the same way. I just wish Mayones would roll their fretboard edges, it really helps with comfort. Might contribute to why the neck feels chunkier than the specs on paper would suggest. The Duvell also has a 43.5mm width at the nut vs the usual 43mm on alot of other guitars which contributes to the chunky feeling neck.

      My dude! My regius has the EXACT same issue, I don't really know what to do, even though mine is brand new, the forearm edge is basically lacerating my arm. I thought it was because of the binding but the duvell has the same issue huh? Plus I do agree the neck is a bit chunky I thought it was going to be way thinner

    • @Unchainedmaple888

      @@alvarosilva6652 Haha the Duvell has the same issue on the fretboard edges. My Regius had the same issue with the forearm edge binding and fretboard binding so I took a razor and rolled/rounded the edges myself. Yes I did this to my expensive ass Mayones cause I dont ever plan on selling it and doing so really helped with the comfort. If you know a competent guitar tech or luthier, they should be able to roll the edges for you.

      @MilianMalivukMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I feel like some companies don't roll the edges because it makes the neck look less precisely build if you know what I mean. There's something visually appealing to a nicely straight edge of the fretboard but the truth is that rolled fretboard edges are just as important as good fret ends. It's something I never thought that much about but lately I really noticed how round fretboard edges are almost even more important than round fret ends.

    Great review man! I'm pleased with the way you mentioned that, even though the neck was too thick for your taste, it did seem to add body to the tone. A lot of us look at Wenge necks with a lot of awe, because you don't see them often. They're expensive and hard to work with, potentially even toxic. If i bought it, i would indeed be hoping those thick slabs of Wenge added to the tone. It sure ain't for the playability it seems lol so might as well sound better at least.

    I appreciate the honesty to your review.
    Being an owner of a two duvells l agree with you on how chunky the duvell neck profiles are. As lm primarily an Ibanez MIJ RG guy as well.
    Most reviews that you see on TH-cam concerning mayones always imply that their guitars are perfect.
    It’s like a cult almost. Everyone says the same thing. But you’re the first to really point out and warn how the necks are shaped.
    While the craftsmanship is impeccable.
    There are some caveats to mayones and you highlighted one. Definitely try one before buy or place an order for one off looks alone.

    • @meldondglord7930
      @meldondglord7930 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Matter of taste. It is not chunky for me.

    • @byronh77
      @byronh77 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@meldondglord7930 if you’re primarily an lbanez RG player. mayones duvell profile is similar to wizard 3 necks which are 19mm at the first fret.
      A duvell is 20.5 mm at the first fret. That’s a pretty significant increase in size that you will notice.
      As the duvell is meant to be a RGA super strat type of design.
      I would expect a slightly thinner neck profile for a custom made guitar that you will wait up to a year for, and you’re paying up to 4000 for one of them.
      Now if you have larger hands longer fingers, you may prefer a large neck. I also you get better tone with a thicker neck. So l understand why they went with the specs they do.
      But it’s a bit disappointing to pay that much for a guitar, you get it and don’t like how the necks feels in your hand because the profile is like a flat D, and a bit chunky, after you’ve waited for a year.
      People need to know this before they buy. Soulhenge is the only one who l’ve seen review one of these guitars and emphasize that fact.
      Mayones makes exceptionally beautiful instruments without a doubt.
      But you need to try one before you order one if you can. The neck profile might be a dealbreaker for most.

    I totally agree on the output jack and the sorta chunky neck profile too. My Mayones Regius is also a bit too chunky for my liking but I got used to it. The Mayones Setius has a very nice and thin feeling neck profile (which is weird because the paper specs say that the Duvell has a thinner neck profile) but unfortunately Mayones does not allow you to spec different neck profiles onto different guitar models. So if you like the looks of the Duvell but you want the Setius neck profile, they wont do it which doesn't make alot of sense to me. Each model has a specific and different neck profile and they do not allow you to interchange them.

    Happy owner of a Duvell here. I also have a huge Ibanez background, and I haven't noticed the Mayones neck to be that chunky. To be fair though, do not expect Mayones to have a crazy super wizard thin like neck profile, if you are planning on getting one. Gotta say that after around 6 months he Duvell neck feels more comfortable to me than my Ibanez guitars now...... comes down to a personal prefference, and seems I am on the chnkier side of things:). Also, agree that the pret edges could have been rounded a bit more, here the Ibanez prestige fret treatment is just unmatched. Conclusion would be that the guitar, and the neck feels great for riffing, while for leads and shredding I would still grab my Ibanez prestige over Duvell, but that is just me.

      Guitar prices in general are getting egregiously high. Caparison's cheapest $2000 model is now $2800 and a regular Caparison is now $3200. ESP E-II can run as high as $2500 and you don't even get the ESP logo on the headstock or stainless steel frets. Ibanez Prestige is now around $2000 as well. Now I'm much more interested in Schecter's solid $800-$1500 range and PRS SE at sub $1000 (the new Zach Myers model is super appealing).

      @@DC13c16 I think I might have seen Rabea do it on a mayones, maybe I should go back and double check his videos, I'm super curious about that because I really want one and as far as shredding in my opinion they are the ultimate guitar but without pinch harmonics that would be a deal breaker I wonder if you just have to raise the action a bit or maybe it was the lundgren pick up's I've never played on those before ,or maybe that guy had the pickup set too far away from the strings I forgot to check that, I've been pulling pinches on emg 81 on les paul, hot rails on a 90s ibanez, and Chapman stock pickups on a ml1 pro easily so it's definitely not my technique.

      @@yournaztyhabit now that you mention it I do recall Rabea doing them my best guess would either be the pickup height or the pickups themselves though I dont think thats the case ive heard a lot of good things about lundgren could be the setup or the strings being under too much tension possibly I dont think any of these monster players would play something or revere them this much if they had a glaring issue like that

      @@yournaztyhabit I've had that issue with one of my guitars that's got a Juggernaut in the bridge. I haven't really sat down to teak any variables yet though.
      But I also remember seeing Bea do it with Mayos in the past, but that guys PHs are some of the absolute nastiest in all the best ways.

      @@danarchism-dissident keep us posted if you do tweak it I'm really curious, that Juggernaut should definitely squeal,,, my guess on all of this is that the guitar I tried maybe that guy had the pickups set too low I wish I would have checked that or maybe with super low action it's harder to pull off pinch harmonics as that mayones had such a perfect neck and fret work I don't think I can get the action that low on anything else I have to experiment,,,, maybe if anybody else knows about super low action versus pinch harmonics or low pick up height versus pinch harmonics maybe I'll try lowering the pickups on my other guitars and see what happens

      Hard to say since I've only been playing Ibanez for the last 1-2 years. It's not as thin as the general appearance of the guitar suggests.

      I think past 2k euros the question if it's worth it doesn't make much sense, at least to me. You can definitely get guitars for half the price that are just as nice as this one. The question is, do you want a Mayones or not?
