Route 66 New Mexico - (almost) every town along the way - 48 of them!

  • New Mexico is the 6th state on Route 66 as you go from Chicago to Santa Monica, and it's possibly the most unique! Various mountains and wide open landscapes start to dominate the drive as well as a lot of Native American culture. I really enjoyed exploring this often forgotten part of our country!

to be honest, the more Im watching the more depressed Im getting. Growing up we always heard grand things of route 66... i imagine all the diners, drive ins, the antique shops, vintage gas pumps and telephone booths, large statues but it looks to be 90% torn up, closed, abandoned places. Not gonna lie, making my heart sink a little. I wish there was a way to restore majority of it and bring it back to life with additions of modern vintage stuff and interactive things. I would love to pass on the idea of rt 66 to my son but by the looks of it... there wont be anything left in even 10 years :(

You are correct, there is definitely a sense of loss when traveling and I encourage anyone to get out there as soon as possible to see it while you still can! But on a positive note, there are a lot of passionate Rt66 folks that are working hard to keep it going!

My father Bill Swan made a lot of iconic fiberglass statues which are placed along Route 66 Some of which can be seen in a short Amazon ebook for only 14.99 and it's called "The man behind the mufflerman ".

That's why New Mexico is called the "Land of Enchantment". Also room 506 in the El Rancho Motel in Gallup is apparently haunted. A spirit in room 506 enjoys opening the drapes to wake up whoever is sleeping. The balcony and lobby are also ghostly hotspots, with full-bodied apparitions, disembodied laughing, talking, and footsteps that have all been reported by staff and guests

I stayed at the Blue Swallow Motel, just before the virus, and it was a great stay, the rooms are a little small, but the beds and linen were high quality and if you don't stop and talk to Keven, you have made a great mistake, he and his family work to help restore old neon signs throughout Tucumcari. I should mention, that I had tried to stay at the Blue Swallow Motel three previous times and it was book each time. Last time i reserved 4 months in advance.
Tucumcari is a great Route 66 town and efforts were underway to restore much of one section to it's pre freeway days.

I remember 66 through Albuquerque very well! Central Ave through the heart of the city & then to the south of the Interstate junction, then west up the hill. Beautiful drive!! Gallup was a very cool place along the route also, with lots of gift shops. Yes, we stayed at the El Rancho a number of times during the 50s & 60s! Please don't leave Holbrook Az out - awesome town!

It’s not just small towns along Route 66 that need investment. We need to find ways to boost up these small towns now that remote work is possible.

Oh man!! Just love New Mexico!! Been through there many times and as well a Flagstaff. The place you stayed at in Gallop is awesome. My wife and I didnt stay there but went on a through the hotel. Plus we got to meet the owner of the hotel. Plus he passed us on the road in his Cadillac. He pulled in just right before us. I can't remember the name of owner off the top of my head but he's a pretty important guy to the area. If I remember correctly he had alot to do with some of the reservations around the area as far as schooling and bringing some of the English language to the very small communities on the outside reservation s. New Mexico is an awesome place with such beauty and you do t have to go very well far to find it. Keep up the great content John. Sorry it took me soooooo long to find this video!!!

They should have New Mexico's slogan as the 'State of Abandon'. By far more buildings abandoned in New Mexico than any other state. You could easily say 'New Mexico is abandoned'. No other state is more appropriately named.

New Mexico is one of my favorite states. When I was in high school and college I had a summer job in Cimarron, New Mexico. Northern NM is so beautiful. Raton is one of my favorite spots. I don't know why, it's not much more than a dot on a map but I have such a soft spot for it. Something Ironic about me. I have been to Las Vegas, New Mexico. I have never been to Las Vegas, Nevada.

El Vado motel looks really nice, at least the exterior. You didn't show much of the room itself. When we did our 66 trip in 201 we stayed at the Desert Inn in downtown Albuquerque. OK but not great. Hope they have resorted it by now.

When I first went thru Bluewater in 1990 the motel was still operational but when i next went thru there in 1993 it was closed. I heard the owner does not welcome visitors or onlookers.
