The problem is when we go into these communities to maintain or upgrade infrastructure we get shot at or robbed.

While I think improving economic circumstances will make a difference the reality is that the problem lies in the family unit. Fatherless children, children being looked after by grandparents. Schooling is a massive issue but family values play a pivotal role. Communities know who the bad guys are. Their mothers' protect them. They know who the dealers are. They know and they are waiting for the police to sort it out. While I do not agree that people should take the law into their own hand I know that if my kids and family are under threat I will do EVERYTHING in my power to protect them. In some communities you don't find these issues because the community as a whole will not allow it. You drive through south Africa and find poverty in rural communities and you don't find these issues at this level because of strong values and strong community leaders. The bad guys make up a small percentage of a larger community and should not be allowed to hold them hostage. Community members should also start looking at themselves and start taking responsibility for their own actions and look at how they raise their kids and how they motivate them and support them and encourage them to be good law abiding citizens that contribute to the greater society. It's 1 in 30 kids who are successful in these communities and they are proof that there is no reason why it cannot be 20 or more out of 30 that becomes positive contributors to their community. It's complicated but it does start with "ME".

This curse that is over the coloured folks can be broken. And where must start , amongst ourselves. Or must I say ask our current government to invite the president of el savadore to south africa.
