I agree I do think people got caught up in the hype especially since some of the bags “look” cute, but very disappointed that it’s not truly recycled leather just bonded leather ☹️
I bought one of the pieces and i’ll post a video of closeups once it arrives! I’m okay with it being lower quality leather, as long as it means there’s less waste ending up in the environment!
Bravoooo! So important to educate customers to ask, research how everything is made from, what fabrics or leather and all process . . . Bravo for your effort! Thank you!
I just ordered an ergo during the restock and then came across your video when looking for reviews, I had no idea it was bonded leather and feel a bit duped. I am probably going to cancel the order or return it. Thank you for the info!
I like your channel even more because of this video. I love your honesty, which lets me know that when you say you LOVE a bag, you really mean it. It’s not all just about clicks, views, and revenue for you. You’re a great TH-camr.
I didn't know it was bonded leather and the page really made it look like scrap in scrap form, not remade into a new fabric. I am happy I didn't buy any, I wonder how many returns they will get.
Okay I knew there was something about it that I didn't like. I didn't feel compelled to buy anything. I am so happy I did. I am not pay top dollar for scraps. Thank you for sharing. Oh and It was nice to see Kitty McFabulous join you for the OOTD!
Thank you for speaking out and provide educational content!! Feel disappointed about Coachtopia is the most polite way I can express my feelings. In fact, if they expand on re-loved section, it would be way more sustainable and creative! I doubt trendy looking bonded leather bags can be timeless as Coach classics (thus less sustainable)! It’s just poor execution of some good concept (circular economy etc.), even in their description, I feel they are just using these trendy buzz words for marketing as well 🙄 Sigh, I wish they elaborate on the re-loved concept, it would have been so cool! It’s really damaging to the brand for the long run… Coach, please do better! Thank you again Scott for always being so honest and fair on brands! I know I can trust your opinion!
You’re welcome Yuana! 🖤 They 100% relied on trendy buzz words as you said, rather than just out right stating what the product really is. Bonded leather is known for not lasting a very long time, and even if they do take these bags back as they are claiming, I honestly dont think they are going to give you much store credit, seeing as they are pretty stingy on buying back old leather bags in general. Much love to you! 😁🖤
After coach was called out a few yrs ago for being so wasteful, tossing hundreds of bags and coming back with coach relove this makes sense, the recycling of their unsold/ damaged/ returned inventory.I like the idea, and I think maybe they should have released a whole bts/ how it’s made to show the sustainable part of recycled leather to show where the product comes from. I see where the stigma is regarding bonded/ genuine leather products, but I think the demographic it’s being promoted doesn’t mind. Genz is into vegan leather and bags like teflar that are plastic, I think coach using key words to sell their products to Genz might work. But being more transparent about what bonded leather is important. As far as price it seems a bit steep, but it could be a more expensive process they are using from sourcing their products they are recycling to having to prep them and processing them into new materials vs new fresh leather.
Leather will always be more expensive to manufacture. Making bonded leather is VERY inexpensive, as the scraps are already available to grind up and add plastic to make a “wanna be” leather. Genuine leather itself, is better and more expensive than bonded, weather or not its 10%, 20%, or 50% leather scraps. As well, Gen Z might be the target, but as a whole, Gen Z can not afford Coach bags. Coach lovers and Coach collectors went crazy for Coachtopia. Not Gen Z. And I hate to say this, but EVERY brand throws out thousands of bags a year because they dont sell. And Coach turned that around with Re-Loved and Upcrafted. And for Coach to push that Gen Z is this big carrying force for a better planet is outright offensive to me because Millenials and Gen X all have been stating we want sustainability but brands never listened. This “Gen Z” this and that, is not correct, but rather a HUGE massive marketing strategy to try and make it seem as if these brands are “Gen Z” friendly, when in all reality theyre making it up on the spot to make more money off new customers. And for Coach to only hire Gen Zers to this Coachtopia crap, is even more of a slap in the face, they went out of their way to hire these people. Sorry to say but this Gen Z push is a marketing scam, and we have been calling for this type of business model for a long time. Millennials initially started this push for a greener planet, yet we are being back seated for new fresh young faces to take money from. Now thats the tea.
@@scottiliciousmcfabulous I agree it’s a huge slap in the face to genx and millennials who are probably these brands biggest customers. The push to genz is annoying but ultimately they are trying to stay relevant. I totally agree as a millennial we spearheaded and pushed for sustainable development from companies and being looked past to the next Gen is off putting. I do like the concept and hope it’s not just another greenwash campaign.
Yikes! I collect a ton of vintage coach and bought an ergo in the first drop. Something felt different but I figured it was bc I was only used to handling really worn bags. I guess I‘ll keep it bc I enjoy the bag but I HATE their sneakiness. Honestly I still would’ve probably bought it if they charged 175-200 US and were upfront about the quality. UGH!
Very informative, thank you. I had no idea what bonded leather was. You totally saved me from spending my money on a product that’s not even 100% leather.
So I missed out on the first release, but Ive been waiting with notifications on for the restock because I was obsessed with the cute retro style. I noticed from the few vids owners have posted that the bags (specifically the dinky) look really flimsy and not well constructed for long term use/wear and tear. Tomorrow is the drop for the one I was going to shell out $400 for and I’m glad I caught your video before then. Thank you for confirming my suspicions that it was a cheap bag that they almost tricked me into 😂 🙏🏼
Having one of these bags for a while, I have to say you just gotta identify with the style and go for it if you like the vibe of Coachtopia. The construction of bag still seems nice, I like the durability, with a lightweight and hassle free nature from the Coachtopia leather. Got one of the green ones and the color is so fun and funky. USA here so prices are a bit lower - a little easier pill to swallow. Look forward to see what else they come up with.
I don't mind scraps if they tell me it's scraps and it's a fab piece that better be way cheaper 🤣 I have a Bernardo coat made out of post consumer plastic bottles and I adore it! For me, it's the disclosure. Don't make it sound good if it's scraps, tell the story about em🤣😂
Let’s just say there getting cheap but prices are still the same.i don’t think people are reading the fine print. I enjoyed this video I’m a bit over these luxury brands I just stopped shopping so much and enjoy what is in my closet.
I really dont think so either! Which means theyll most likely continue to slide away with it all. Agreed with you, I made a couple purchases, but I think Im done for awhile. The amount of product being thrown at us is simply overwhelming, and the more we acquire, the less other bags will get used. It can be hard to pull yourself out of that loop, so Im proud of you for being able to do so! 😁👜😍
I always love it when you call companies out and put them on blast. Shame on Coach. You did a great job of making people aware so hopefully a few less people end up scammed. Love you! 😘
I really thought the black and white checkered bag was woven pieces of full grain leather scraps, not bonded leather. The little bit of video they show, looks like scraps of leather made into a one of a kind bag. With the process of bonded leather, they can make the same bags over and over again. I believe for the price of the Coachtopia bags, I would rather buy a Coach bag and pay the extra 100.00 for full grain leather that will last for decades.
I do believe that PARTS of the checkered bag have “leather” but they never state what kind of leather, if its full-top-genuine, pebbled, what ever. The information is extremely minimal and most of the bag IS made with the Coachtopia Leather tm* that Im mostly talking about in the video. I 1000% agree and if ANYTHING, you can get a full-grain leather bag for the EXACT same price on the retail website. 🤧 $430 can get you a Coach retail bag with full-grain leather or a couple of Coach Outlet bags with real leather.
Bonded leather to me is like what they don't tell you about Meat glue at the supermarket so no thanks. Anyhoo I'm just obsessed to get a jelly tabby that's not even leather but not trying to be lol.
Only telling you what they think you need to hear as a consumer and included “limited stock” “exclusive” 😜 I passed on this product line. Way Overpriced, not crazy about design. I prefer top handle bags and hardware.
Coachtopia….not for me. Coach is known for deceiving customers like the increase of price and giving discount codes. Just today I was reading about outlet bags being sold in selected retail stores for full price. Customers who have no clue about Coachoutlet price and outlet quality will pay full price for an item thinking they purchased a retail item. Wth Coach!!!
Could it be that Coachtopia advertising it as “coachtopia leather” on their website is because they figured out a unique way to develop bonded leather that isn’t harming the environment? :) I’m not sure where we could find that info! But I just wonder why they would push that narrative so much that these are environmentally friendly! Because if you think about it, there’s probably tons of leather that ends up in landfills :) it’s nice that they’re trying to find a solution! (Just depends on how they’re actually bonding these leathers though)
Coach is riding the hype right now, is trying to position themselves as the "young purse brand" and is looking to gen z as a buyer. Gen Z has been the most vocal about sustainability, recycling and being good to the planet and this is what Coach offered. Those who know the leather industry knew not to buy this. I almost did out of hype but ultimately, none of the bags were really that cute and only had one function. I was already cringing at EVERYTHING being recycled. I just don't want that in a higher price point. I would have sent them back. Not worth it to me.
Bonded is definitely a hard pass, but even so I am not crazy about this line of products. I like the font. That's about it. As I said on another video about Coach's new venture, the bags are more like Mehtopia. Edit: I love how you paired your OOTD with fur.😸
