    BTW just this year (2023) the new book has been released on the topic: "Coins of the Pontic kingdom under Mithridates 6 Eupator" (author: V. N. Yushkov).

    Your story telling and amazing artistic ability is a perfect combination helping everyone learn through coins. I personally really appreciate it. And can’t wait to wear my pink Athenian owl shirt around.

    Maravillosas monedas, que piezas mas espectaculares, son gemas... Y ni hablar de la calidad de los videos, cada vez quedo pasmado frente a tu producción, es limpia, construida, da en el blanco cada vez, si había un festival de Cannes de canales de numismatica, sin duda alguna te llevas las palmas !

    Great video. Love the coins of Mithradates VI, especially the bronzes - especially his extensive hero Perseus imagery showing the slaying of Medusa as an allegory to resisting Rome. He probably borrowed this iconography from the Macedonian Kingdom, Philip V/Perseus the King, failed resistance to Rome, in the previous decades, where they featured Perseus the hero as well.. Perseus, the mythological hero, was viewed as the founder of Persia as well so was a unifying hero in multi-cultural state.

    His coins are fascinating, although his portrait tetradrachms are scarce and expensive, his civic brass, bronze and copper coins are readily available and affordable!

    • @ClassicalNumismatics
      @ClassicalNumismatics  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thats true! Im paying more attention to his brass issues, I'll get more in the future. Recently got a lovely obol, a very chunky, 15 gram piece.

      @Numischannel ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ClassicalNumismatics The bronze obol (as the one you showed in photo) with the head in bashlik, struck prior to the introduction of orichalcum issues in the last stages of the reign, is even heavier (average weight 20g, sometimes more)!

    Whenever I think of Mithradates I just think of the Unbiased History of Rome where he’s an annoying little dude with a lion skin on his head lol
    His coinage is really nice, thanks for showing these.

    I DO have a coin of the Pontic Kingdom. It's a bronze with the head of Ares, like the one shown in the video but with no control marks or crescent and star. I got it because I was inspired by this channel and the artistry amazes me for a piece of relatively small value.

      On catalogues they are typically called "fruits", so I just went for that theory, but what you say is plausible.

    Great video! How do we know that the Lysimachus coin was struck under Mithridates, since nothing on the coin itself says so?

    • @ClassicalNumismatics
      @ClassicalNumismatics  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Mostly by hoard locations and style. The types struck under Lysimachus were sculpted in very fine style, while those under Mithridates are less well defined.

    Classical numismatics how do you get access to all of these excellent coins?

    • @ClassicalNumismatics
      @ClassicalNumismatics  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am very active on social media groups, and Im constantly talking to other collectors and asking them if they are willing to film me their coins. You would be surprised on how kind and generous people are with their time, as most of them film me their wonderful coins.

      @@ClassicalNumismatics very nice! Have you also contacted (national) coin collections etc. They have thousands of items. Here in the netherlands for example i was thought numismatics by the administrator of the national dutch coin collection.

    • @ClassicalNumismatics
      @ClassicalNumismatics  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes I have, and without exception they have been completely dismissive of my requests. Unless you are an academic or archaeologist, they wont let you access any coins. Maybe in the Netherlands or the UK things are different
