I've been alive for 42 years, and I feel like every President since John Adams has been undermined at some point by their former. Jefferson was undermined by Adams when Adams appointed several anti-Jeffersonian men to high office just prior to the end of his term. Adams did not attend Jefferson's inaguration, and nor was he even invited. US history is filled many more examples of this type of activity by past presidents, and their political allies. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but it certainly isn't unprecidented.
