  • Craig ‪@MeetMeOutside‬ and I enjoy a weekend on Lake Aziscohos, in Northwestern Maine. A nice lake. We had plans to utilize a couple different camp sites and explore the lake a bit. Mother nature had other plans! Regardless, we enjoyed our time on the lake. I hope you enjoy this video.

    Looks like your canoe was longer than the troughs between the waves. I have a Wenonah Advantage, which has a straight keel line. It's pretty terrible in rough water, but that's not what it was intended for. Your canoe must have some rocker. I haven't looked at the Wenonah line since I bought my canoe in 1993!
    You guys know how to eat! That's some delicious looking grub. Bacon is a gout trigger. I am having a flare-up right now! I am very sad. 😢 Great photography, with the slo-mo waves including the sound. Scary!
    Checking out the specs on your canoe, it looks like a great solo fishing canoe, but, like most Wenonah canoes, it's designed with paddling efficiency in mind and not so much for handling rough water. You hit the nail on the head as far as taking on water is concerned, in rough water, pack the load around your body and close to the keel line. In flat water, pack it in the ends for efficiency and tracking. In case you were wondering, yes, I did sell canoes near the end of the previous century. I sold cross country skis, hiking equipment and bicycles also. I plan on retiring this year, while I have a hope of thruhiking the Appalachian Trail. I'm getting old. I could barely manage 274 miles in a month of hiking this spring. 😊

      Great points sir. Packing a canoe in big water versus flat water makes a huge difference. I can relate to the gout , I take a daily med to help with that. Great input from you man. Best of luck to you !

      This is a fantastic comment. You know much more about canoes than I do. The Wilderness was handling the rough water....but not that well. I very quickly realized the design of the canoe was not for big chop. I don't think it would have continued to do so for much longer. I thought for sure it was going to swamp on me. By the time I got to shore there was easily 2" of water in the canoe and it was not handling well. Now my curiosity wants to know just how much water it can take on before swamping. I need shallow water and big shop to find out.........
      Let me know if you find yourself on the NH section of the AT. If the timing is right I would be happy to meet you, help out if I can and bring trail magic.
      Great information about loading a canoe. Thank you

    Damn good stuff. And making the most of bad weather is a camping essential. Btw. You both kill it when it comes to doing it right and having fun. I guess it’s time to toss all that crappy food and start treating myself right. Great content. Keep it up!

    • @ItsGoodintheWoods
      @ItsGoodintheWoods  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Often times the moments with bad weather are the most memorable! Usually makes for a real good time. It helps when you enjoy your company! We had a real good time on that lake. The beauty about canoe camping is usually weight isn't much of a concern. on a short weekend trip like this one it's pretty easy to pack for a good time. That makes it an easy decision for me to pack good food, beers and bourbon! That weight almost took me out on the paddle in though ! It was an awesomely intense situation. Thank you for checking out the video Royce. I am glad to hear you liked it. I appreciate your feedback.
      PS. Life is too short....eat good food! LOL

    Yes! Love the camera Falling over in the beginning! Hahaha that was some wavy water. Bet that made travels a little longer. The way you eat on the trail makes mountain house seem like it came from a wag bag. That's crazy how low the water is. Thanks for sharing brother! #TeamLanshan

    • @ItsGoodintheWoods
      @ItsGoodintheWoods  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had to leave the camera falling in the video! LOL The great thing about canoe camping is weight is much less of an issue. It usually makes for a good time. That water was nuts bro. Good fun !

    When I was 12 or 13, My Dad and Uncle booked a stay at Bosebuck Mountain Camp. It was marketed to me as a Great Salmon Fishing Adventure (which it was).
    Dad told me if I saved my shekels...I could come. Between my Paper Route and surfing the couch and car cushions for coins, I came up with the $450 to tow my line.
    Little did I know...the camp was on Aziscohos/Parmecheene in ME.....a Popcorn fart from Berlin.
    It has super fishing, paddling, and love sites that u can book in advance....Wish I had known that at 13!
    Thoughts for Spring....

      I had no Idea you were close to Aziscohos. It is currently one of my very favorite bodies of water. I have spent quite a bit of time on it. The furthest north I have been is to the Wilderness campground on the northern portion. I have to get up to the northern tip.
      A good friend of mine does a lot of snowmobiling up there by Bosebuck. He tells me about it all the time, but I have not been that far up yet. There is some serious history underneath that lake. Very fascinating stuff.
