I love what she says about their part of London being the centre. I've had a number of addresses in London. I used to view Hackney wick (where I live now) as far Far East, now I view Archway (where I once lived) as virtually a time zone away. London feels to me like many villages, I feel she writes about London today, better than anyone I can think of. Truly she's admirable.
I had the pleasure of meeting her at the old Olsson's bookstore in DC. Couldn't wait to leave work and meet this great writer. I, too love hearing about her life in London and the melting pot of humanity. The very first book I read (White Teeth) ignited my interest in reading more of her genius work. I am anticipating more of her writings in the future. I am a Zadie Smith's fan.
I'm glad to hear about Zadie writing a novel which doesn't subscribe to the 'All men are b@$ t@rd$' philosophy. I believe, like Solzhenitsyn, that the dividing line between good and evil runs through the human heart and so it is right that novelists reflect that.
Andy McKinney Yeah, I think writing from the female perspective shouldn't mean that one demonizes or dehumanises men. Female characters and male characters can be complex human beings simultaneously, without skewing the complexity in favour of one sex.
@@activeone no, she's a genius because of her qualities as a writer; her ability to write gorgeous naturalistic dialogue, her portraits of variegated London, her insights into the process of writing, multiculturalism, the experience of being mixed race, academic writing, academia. She is simultaneously one of the greatest urban realists in modern lit and one of the most accessible and fun postmodernists. You should maybe read one of her books :) I recommend On Beauty, Swing Time or White Teeth.
‘On my jack jones’ is Cockney rhyming slang and is said by all races and colours, but the way Zadie speaks here is as if it is unique to only the black community which is not true. Same with traipsing, it’s not specific to any kind of subculture. I don’t know why she must bring colour and race into things when it is of no relevance. We are all just people in the end, and yes we must observe difference in treatment and cultures when it’s relevant and true, but here it is neither so she divides for no reason.
She often sounds like a terribly over-educated Rap-artist; as if Lauren Hill was also a Professor. Can't shake off the horror of what the 1700's version of her did with herself; her hunger for extension is insatiable.
I am on a Zadie Smith marathon!! God, if you are up there please let me be a janitor so I can eavesdrop one of her lectures in the name of learning😭
Such a beautiful & talented geek! I love her. She's just awesome. Her mind is magic!
Beautiful?
Yes beautiful!

Every word of this. I'm obsessed with her way of viewing our city.
"I was 16 and I blinked." 21:09 Terrifying, terrifying thought.

I don't get her appeal, and the claim that she's a genius. What makes her a genius?

You should read her book of essays "Changing My Mind". Got me to read "Their Eyes Were Watching God" which she wrote a great essay on.
@Peter Kelner and you are a man in his room doing nothing with his life :)
@@dannytoots6635 he's not wrong though. Zadie is not a genius just because you and a handful of others are impressed

I hear say that she is beautiful; instead she's far from it. And she sounds like Corpsegrinder Fisher.
