...The absolute incompatibility of the three or four manners cultivated by D. suggests deliberate cultivation of a precise style (or another) in a particular painting, rather than a passion for painting for the painting sake; in my opinion, a suspect versatility, all the more suspect as D. performs mediocrely in all of them. From exceedingly crude (here, to give him credit, he could not do otherwise, paying allegiance to the Fauves), to unbearably dull (and superficial) clay-like portraits, fake Italian primitives, and other portraits, this time aspiring for saccharin prettiness... No hard feelings towards A.D. I'm just exercising critical thinking, for the benefit of my students............
