I’ve seen two episodes and I’m hooked! Great series “The Forger’s Masterclass” with John Myatt, former art forgery painter. Myatt is an excellent narrator and teacher, both to the students and to the audience. Well Done! And Thank You.

I'm here too binge watching this awesome stuff so many Golden nuggets for artists ! Both externally and the internal struggle of painting so neat to watch him pull that out of them!

"really a good painting is just a successful exploitation of a series of mistakes!" John Myatt Love this! Really there are no mistakes. Only learning.

As far as I can remember...we were told that the Fauves didn't use white or black mixed with other colours to create light and shade but to use the colours themselves eg green or blue to indicate dark . So warm colours indicated light nd cold ones dark.

I've lived in many different cities across the country & visited many cities across the world.
I always check out the local galleries, and its been my experience that the local galleries prefer artist who know nothing about painting because they sell to people who know nothing about art.
It is rare for me to find something in a local gallery that I like enough to lay down my money.

Just love it, John! THANK YOU! This series really gives me a kick in the ar..e, after a period of stagnation and even coming to a complete stop with painting. Nothing is disclosed about the kind of paints being used here, though. As a matter of fact I have no experience with oils, having mainly used acrylics plus gouache and egg tempera earlier on. I'd be grateful for further advice.

I would cover one eye and loose all sense of depth. Then I'd think with the rage of a bull and pull out red. Then I'd draw the sketch with my weak hand. Then I'd drink 1/2 bottle of wine and listen to gigues. Then I'd use the wrong end of the brush to apply, then the hairy end to jiggle it about.

I feel like the two women were closer to painting a Fauve style than the guy. The man added way too much detail, but yet, the whole point of painting in this way is to paint simple shapes, with some small strokes to show detail.

she was, but when you are a child, you are always trying to 'get better' become 'more realistic' and once you get to that point, it's very very hard to 'regress' again- it goes against everything you've strived for- and it just 'feels wrong' to do it- it's very very hard to embrace and allow the 'wild beast' to take over- because your mind fights you the hwole way- most people anyways-

What happened??! I thought the brunette's painting at 20:43, when it had that huge red blotch in the upper middle right - that was brilliant; and it seemed the teacher thought so as well - why then, at the end, was it TOTALLY different?? The red had been absolutely erased, and what was in its place was... like all of the paintings ended up being: quite underwhelming... :( I was really disappointed overall and don't believe any of the artists truly captured the feel of Derain (whose work I had never seen before, but I really like this one).

Am I the only one who feels like the showing of his prison drawings is a bit awkward and even borderline unpleasant? I know that's kind of mean, he did his time and has ostensibly repaid his debt to society, but do we really need to be reminded of that throughout the series? If he has truly moved on, then why the re-hash... Just focus on the art - it's not like we couldn't use more time of the students themselves in the show! ;))

@@dougg1075 I can see both point of view - I see the importance of his instruction. though I do feel he may be being a bit too "helpful," as in, I feel that he tends to put too much of his personal influence/ opinion onto the student; as opposed to just nudging them in a certain direction, he is half-way moving their feet for them as well.

    • @theeaselrider4032

      It's a time thing.
If you have a student for days, weeks, semesters, etc.. then you have time for them to find their own way, get off course and make mistakes and learn and develop their own path. But if you are trying to squeeze it all into a half hour program, then there's going to be a lot of hand-holding going on.
In fairness though, John's not really a teacher. He has a vast knowledge of other artists and techniques, but kind of lacks the ability to present those to students in small enough chunks they can digest it and make use of them.
I've met many great artists and many great art teachers - very few are both.
Having said all that, I like John's videos very much and have watched them all. I'm trying to help my daughter with a school project about Fauvism, and this video might be exactly what she needs.

Lástima que justo con este artista tocaron tres personas incapaces de hacer un simple dibujo. Ninguno de los tres pudo hacer la mas simple composición con la rueda y la costa y los edificios. Los tres horribles diseños.
