I was almost eight years old when the church went down in a heap of rubble. And I remember the laughing kids, playing in the arches of Bahnhof Mitte, Stadt Metz and Neustädter Bahnhof. Laughing! Because they thought they were safe now - after fleeing from Eastern Germany , Schlesien, from the Russians. Dresden was known as a safe place at the end of the war and was full of them: more than 600.000. Lucky who had relatives in town - the others lived happyly under the brickbuild arches of the stations. They got away - and they lived, they were not guilty of the war. And they were not even registered! But the Allies knew of them! If those people would have known . . . Then, before my escape to the West, my eyes could see the main station from Postplatz. A windy place. And now the "Frauenkirche" stands there again. Proudly! I would never have believed it! The tears are running freely . . .
