- For the past 200 million years, the American horseshoe crab has roamed our planet. A semiaquatic species, these creatures spend the majority of their time in shallow waters and can be found along the Atlantic coastline of North America. Their ten eyes help them stay oriented while swimming, and their hard shell protects them from turtles and sharks. Horseshoe crabs have long been harvested for their blood, which has helped prevent illnesses around the world. Sadly, due to overharvesting and habitat loss, their populations are quickly dwindling in the wild.

Survive the last 5 mass extinction event and now on the brink of extinction for one reason, Humanity. Just goes to show that humanity will be the next bringer of extinction for these animals.
There is actually significant debate in the scientific community over whether or not humanity itself should be considered a new mass extinction event, considering all the species we've wiped out since our emergence.

Fun fact: they're more closely related to spiders than crabs and lobsters and their telson (the long pointy thing) is used to stick in the sand to flip themselves over if they're upside down.

I see horseshoe crabs when I go fishing. I threw my fishing rod and I caught something. It was a horseshoe crab. It was stuck between its legs and we tried its best to get it out. When we got it out we pushed it back to the water. We saved its life! Yay! :D

This 'docu' doesn't really cut the cake honestly. I mean, come on, 1:08 minutes? It's more like an infomercial. There is so much more to tell about them. Especially because it's species are apparently disappearing, it deserves more than a minute! Now it feels more like 'Yeah hey, this is the American Horseshoe Crab and it might go extinct. The End.'
Unless it's conceptually done, it just doesn't feel like Great Big Story-worthy.

Marinus That's not the point of this channel. This channel provides a little information on a lot of subjects. It can inspire people to learn more when a subject intrigues them. If they only made full documentaries fewer people would watch and fewer subjects would be covered.
promo... you must agree that 1:08 is quite meagre. I agree they do not have to go indeep too much, but this one is not the quality I'm used to from Great Big Story and I love their productions!
Since when is it wrong to have a critical eye. I think that on a platform like youtube, which exists because of it's audience, it's great to also be able to point out of something isn't up to par. This channel puts out some wonderfully great docu's and shorts and this one kind of stands out in not such a great way. I think that creators should also hear an honest opinion every once in a while instead of just hearing endless praise. I even did a thumbs up on the video because I still like the topic and I did some research into the horseshoe crabs about half a year ago.

I really love the overall format of these videos, but the information always feels so hollow and incomplete. Like, cool, these crabs are being threatened. How about some more details? Talk about the medicines made from their blood, the industries that harvest and farm these, methods of renewable cultivation and preservation. Something, anything more, please.
Research it yourself. Jesus Christ. This channel knocks out more than one video a day. They can't do everything. Unsub if you don't want little vignettes to give you inspiration for more learning.

Loli ravioli except the horseshoe crab doesn’t have a lot of blood to give, unlike most animals. They have very different blood and it’s a delicate process that puts lots of strain on the animal
