Very nice Leon. I've had my 3TM modded MP-1 since about a month when they first were relased on the ADA Depot. Still have it. One of my fav preamps to this day. Been wanting to rebuild the full rack... Keep the great content coming. Cheers
I have 2 MP-1's currently (one in the rack, one as backup)... using a Furman PQ-3 to boost it and a BBE 411 to really make it shine (MP-1's really need the BBE if you ask me, and in the studio Michael Wagener used a BBE 802 on all those classic 80's albums including Nuno's tone). Great video as always!
Good morning Leon! Thanks for the Demo! Great to see The Green Monster! Nice tones, Thanks for sharing Brother! Dr appointments next 3 days, wish me Luck! Be Well All!
You gotta love the ADA MP1s...The ONLY preamp for me who did it for the Nuno sound. Remember Nuno doesn't actually alternate pick his riffs, he just legatos the shit out of them while palm muting to get this percussive tone....It's absolutely tricky to nail it and I only managed to get it sound "right" (that is super clean and articulate and over-compressed BUT not muddy at all) with the ADA 3TM and a very Trembly pickup but NOT super high output (Bill Lawrence (becky) is better compared to the Duncan)...the best fit for a. pickup was from a 1986 Charvel Model 4, Jackson pickup which is literally like having a compressor in front :)
I still have my ADA MP1 in the rack. I modded it using a kit from adadepot, the mesa 666 mod. Basically, it adds more low end and more mid tone control as well as gain.
Just came across this video as a random in my feed. Great sounds. Still use my MP-1. Modded my two tube board as a cathode follower like a Marshall 2204 or Soldano. ADADepot is a great source of info. Also have a Microtube 100 amp, and Microcab speaker emulator.
Love my mp-1! I know rack gear has kinda gone out of style, but it does offer way more versatility. My mp-1 is stock. I bought it for 200 bucks a couple of years ago. I’ve been looking to get another one, but the price is more than 3times that now if you can find one. I wasn’t too happy with it at first, but I ran it through an eq and it totally came alive! Good stuff!
Mutha (Don't Wanna Go To School Today) ...best Extreme song of all Extreme songs and on their first album produced and recorded by Bob St. John with zero budget. Nuno became Kid Ego for a while. Who wouldn't if compared to Yngwie and Eddie, which he was, every time a journalist wrote about him.
There is a thread on Gearspace where Michael Wagener shared the settings of the preset that he claimed to use on Skid Row, Extreme, and White Lion's albums he recorded. The settings are different here, but maybe the original was a starting point, who knows. Still cool, all these years later the ADA MP1 still kicks ass! Cool video sir!
For anyone looking for this, you'll find the settings in the discussion at this link: gearspace.com/board/high-end/36736-questions-michael-wagener-2.html
I think you mean Gearslutz. He said he used the same exact settings on all three players. Nuno’s tracks sound like he had a Rat pedal added to the equation. It’s far more percussive and punchy where Vito sounds smoother and warmer.
A new ADA video from Leon is always appreciated! Speaking of which, ages ago I told you that I had read that I had heard that Angus Young used the ADA MP-1 for a while, and I've finally been able to source the claim: it came from an interview with our guys Vito and George in Guitar for the Practicing Musician in 1989. Vito, of course, had just been on tour with AC/DC at the time, although I will have to add that his phrasing is less committal than I remember. Is there any way to get in touch with you outside of here? I'd be happy to send you the quote in question, but YT doesn't allow external links in the comment section.
Thank you so much for making a video. I just purchased my first ADA mp-1 preamp! Unfortunately it's not holding the preset settings! This particular model does not have the switch on the top. I think most likely the battery needs to be replaced but I don't have the skills to do that if it's hardwired in there. Any advice would be appreciated! Keep doing what you do!
It’s all your fault… all these ADA MP1 videos and I had to buy one this week to chase my nostalgic 1980’s dreams… I hope it’s as good as remember. Sounds good on your videos. 😎🤘
Alaways love the MP-1 videos. I still have mine from the 80's. When is Cliff going to add it to the Fractal gear? It is all over the request gear to add, in the forums.
I didn’t think I’ll ever be in a position to ever lay my hands on all these gears be it accessibility or financially, so I got hold of an old Randall RG 75 3G with the hope of getting close to the ballpark of Nuno tone. I got it so because of Randall rolling out with those NB series for a short period of time…..now is there anyone out there who could possibly help me out with the tone chase. I play a very basic BC Rich with a HH configuration with a licensed Floyd Rose. I think the tone @ 1:35 is just incredible, and fantastic playing too. Thanks for the video and sharing the information!!!
With a good pair of Monolith M1060 on my old and ruined ears: the 220V (for me the best of the three... and the one i have) has a more "healty" and "opened" and balanced sound than the 110V that sounds a bit "muffled". The 3TM to me totally alter the character of the ADA MP1 adding some artificial sizzle on the top highs (something like the old Behringer "tube" rack fxs)... in some point it loose the bass and the punch and in other it seems heavily scooped but not in the good way we all mean "scooped" (ya know: the "smile eq"). So... i'm happy with my stock ADA-MP1 220V!
Sounds fantastic! What are your thoughts on master gain settings? I gravitate toward the Michael Wagner setting, but he runs the master gain at 7.5 which makes it hard to balance with a clean sound. Also, do you prefer to run a hot output from the MP1 into the power amp or keep thre volume knob on the MP1 lower and run the power amp hotter?
also, curious, since you have 3 and it has a stereo out have you tried multiplexing? into the first one, then out the two stereo outs one each, then stereo pan into 4 seperate amps, should be able to time the effect to get some ncie canyon wall effects, specially if you mic back.. picked up a pitchtraq the other day, motor is out of balance or a wheel or two but it works.. crazy old school stuff is WICKED and sounds way better then those new dry skinny units they want $10k for, fugg that, loop up a bunch of old school units and its only like konkey dong!
I was thinking "I swear the 110 V sounds the best, but I'm probably just imagining" until you said the same thing. The 3 tube mod is much more clinical, but when you really turn up the gain, it has its benefits. Do Nuno settings require a RAT?
In recent years Nuno has used the RAT pedal with various Marshall heads live. And if I'm not mistaken he used it back in the 80's before the MP-1. But never with the MP-1 live or in the studio as far as I know.
I still have my MP1, midi foot peddle, and a ADA power amp, stereo. Loveless. But now the question. Where can I find good tech support for the line. It went out of buisness, I think. Anyone know?
@@LeonTodd LOL! I had mine I bought new in 1991, with split stack, tube and SS power amps (got the tube amp later, since I liked it better, but then I bought a 3rd Power stereo power amp, and that brought it all to fire-breathing life!) Sold it all 2 years ago, since I became a Fractal Audio addict instead! Still have my Alesis Quadraverb that was part of that rig, though!
Hi Leon, I also noticed that the 110v mp-1 sounds slightly better than the 230v. Would you say this is just due to component tolerances from unit to unit or does voltage somehow affect tone? Thanks.
I have backed down the volume pot to around 11 o'clock and the mastergain to around 6.5-7.5. Makes the tone alot better. More string separation. More Noice sure but I have a nociegate

Sick tones! Thanks for posting.
Glad you enjoyed it! Been meaning to do this one for ages
Wtf is a Nino?

If I remember correctly the Bill Lawrence pup in his signature is really bright, probably explains the settings with so much bass boost and treble cut

Love these tones! I first heard these way back in the day from Paul Gilbert and Bruce Bouilette. Great vid!
ADA MP-1 Classic my secret weapon 🤟 Thanks Leon 🤟
