Why Grand Prix is (and isn't) the best racing film ever

  • The film Grand Prix was released in 1966 and captured an era of motor racing loved dearly by fanatics around the world. The footage of the racing should be enough for it to be considered the greatest racing film ever. Is it, though?

This knocks the spots off Rush! Rush had the storyline but the actual racing was a bit off for the proper fans. Easy to spot where they'd used a different circuit to represent an old one but they didn't always get the topography right. Cars were spot-on though as were the cast.
Grand Prix though is just a motorsport fan's dream with unlimited cameos, proper racing footage, brilliant cars and a proper sense of theatre. Can't wait for Josh's take on it.

@@SteamedhamsEdnalovescock I firmly disagree with you. Rush was probably the highlight of Howard's career.
The critical reception was vastly positive, with the film holding an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and having watched the film, it's not hard to see why. The film is fairly accurate (even Niki Lauda himself said it was very accurate), yet manages to entertain and amaze. And, unlike the 2010 film Senna, Rush doesn't make either driver look like a total ass, whereas in Senna, poor Alain Prost is made to look like the biggest monster in F1 since the inception of the sport. Rush portrayed both drivers very well, without having to resort to turning either driver into a villain.

Niki wasn't daft, he knew how to play the game and what would "sell" which is why he didn't call this out. "Rush" is an awful, atrocious, epically bad file (& I say that as a massive fan of Apollo 13 & Ron Howard) - the racing shots look pathetically slow and staged (apart from Lauda's accident) and some of the acting is more wooden than a matchstick model of the wooden horse of Troy! If "Senna" didn't exist then this would be the 2nd worst racing movie of all time (behind, obviously, "Driven").

The title sequence, which is amazing, is by the renowned graphic designer Saul Bass. Although he had made many title sequences before, mostly for Hitchcock films he had no real experience of shooting live footage. Frankenheimer asked Bass to shoot footage for the titles and just left him to it. Unfortunately or perhaps fortunately he use up nearly all the very expensive film stock in a few days. This required some refinancing of the movie. Worth every penny. It’s also worth noting that Gordon Daniel won an Oscar for his brilliant sound design.

I remember seeing this on Encore here in the states when I was 15. The soap opera stuff was worth watching to get to the racing scenes. Seeing the old Monza with the banking was mindblowing!

I first see Grand Prix in one of the big West End Cinemas in 1966,Never was a motor racing buff but see this with 3 mates that were,All I can say is this film has impressed me since the day I first see it.One if not the Best Motor Racing Pictures.

Actually, Steve McQueen was Frankenheimer's first choice to be Pete Aron but the combination of getting into an argument of the Grand Prix's producer and he was doing Sand Pebbles, the role when to James Garner. This film is probably the reason Le Mans happened because McQueen wanted to do a racing movie.

I saw this movie when I was ten years-old fifty-five years ago. I not only like it out of sentimentality, I admire Grand Prix (1966) because it _is_ a great movie. Now I'm trying to find a definitive documentary on the making of the film.

Saw the premiere in Hollywood at the Cinerama Dome on Sunset Blvd when I was 9. Changed my life right then and there and the passion for cars and racing never left. Both my parents worked on the film in post production so I've got some arguable DNA associated with the film. Begged my folks to take me to various theaters close to 50 times as it worked its way down the food chain until it came to TV.
The fact the Ferrari opened his factory to the production after viewing a 30 minute sample of the Monaco sequence Frankenheimer sent him says more than anything else we could add.
This racing film is the GOAT...

I saw this movie for the first time back when Arrested Development was on its first run, and it was a shock to find a young Lucille Bluth (Jessica Walter) as the female lead. I didn't particularly like the story or the acting, but it's worth a look because of the cinematography, which was very cutting edge for its time. Also the cameos, of course.

Check out the 2020 demo if you haven't already - still pretty good. Recently I got back into it and found out the default diff settings are probably exactly opposite of the nearest you can get to the "cam and pawl" diff used at the time (the game simulates a more complicated "salisbury" diff for some reason). Reverse the numbers, max out the clutches, change the brake bias forwards and enjoy!

"Nothing much happens" I mean, other than the infamous rainshower that caused half the field to crash at Masta, including Jackie Stewart (which led to his safety crusade), and a first person POV shot of Phill Hill in the GT40 camera car hauling ass through the carnage and passing Dan Gurney. It's pretty nuts that all of that was captured on film and ended up in the movie.

The films totally wild, how can absolutely no one just keep a healthy marriage? Must have been the petrol fumes
But I love how stylish it is. The split screen shots, the fade out cuts, the scenes with no dialogue and just racing.
And the footage of the cars and the circuits is incredible.
I like to think that Graham Hill didny actually know he was in the film, he just kind of turned up to sing, drink ale and go fast and someone caught it on camera

As an F1 fan I loved this movie. If for nothing else, then for the cameos of the real drivers it was worth it.
By the way, did you know that they used F2 cars for filming? Whenever you see the actors drive a car it's an F2 car (mostly Lolas if I remember correctly) converted to look like its F1 counterpart.

Very good video, only one wee thing, you mentioned Toshiro Mifune could speak english, he actually couldn’t but memorised his lines phonetically. So i imagine that it probably helped the actors on set but just didn’t sound quite right so they had to overdub, apparently his memorising of mexican/spanish was very impressive though. Anyway keep up the good work!

Only big complaint is that at Monza they did the damn "pushing the gas pedal down makes you go faster" cliche that every racing movie does.
It does look amazing in HD because it was filmed on very high-resolution 65mm film with Super Panavision 70 lenses. The HD of its day!

I had to buy the DVD for this years ago. yes the story line is whatever, but the real star of this movie is how close the cameras were able to film. Its like the netflix coverage of modern F1. Cameras in and around the team garage and showing the real races. They were always going to make some romance story, but the footage in High Def is awesome.

Not true. He spun at Burnenville and the straw bales did just enough to stop the car, he got out unhurt. Maybe you're thinking of Jackie Stewart's crash at the Masta Kink where he demolished a woodcutters hut and ended up almost in the basement of a farmhouse.

Excellent movie. When social distancing started I sat down and watched Rush, Le Mans, Grand Prix and Driven (lol)
Grand Prix is an awesome movie, besides the dubbed speaking parts over the racing... And the ending! It felt like that the ending camera shot was straight out of the sound of music. The intro montage is probably my favourite car related movie introduction. It's so well shot, and the sound is awesome.
