I once did that thing after an interview for a job that I didn't get whereby I (very politely) asked the recruiter why I didn't get the job because I wanted to be better in any other job interviewer and would appreciate advice.
After a lot of insistence (again, really polite) on my part the HR recruiter told me: "Your CV was great and they liked a lot of ideas in your interview - but they didn't like *you*."
And that's why I spent the next 20 years of my working life as a freelancer earning a damn good living without having to care about whether people liked me on a full time salary.

Several interviews like this, in one they offered me an interview for the next grade up on the spot (instant promotion) they then spent the whole interview trying to tear into my technical knowledge, I knew the area inside out and it was embarrassing how little they understood. I had to explain basic techniques to them. You could tell, from the moment I walked in, I had rubbed them up the wrong way. They shot down examples of handling issues with collaborative projects as not being confrontational enough (you don’t take suppliers to court over minor design issues). My feedback was I didn’t have the technical ability for the role despite being interviewed for a different role & holding my own. I complained to their HR in the end saying it was the “most abrasive interview I have ever experienced”. The recruiter had kept chasing for a feedback form
Actually thinking about it, it was weird all round, I arrived an hour early and there was a graduate role being interviewed at the same time, a lad was so nervous he was crying I had a chat with him and tried to give him some interview prep. A girl walked in 45 minutes late for the same interview and they didn’t seem concerned, that broke his spirit.

It’s not really misogyny to assume that a woman looking to have kids soon might leave you high and dry work wise. I’ve been the coworker in this type of situation. We had a woman go on maternity leave two years in a row. Everyone else had to pick up the slack because we couldn’t fill her position. I understand why we as a society made this type of question illegal, but it doesn’t change reality.

    • @ninawii5318
      @ninawii5318 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

@@obits3 it's misogyny because child care is considered the woman's job only (maternity leave is an example of this as the child usually has two caring parents) but also things after that (eg. Taking the kid to doctors appointments, school, school meetings, play dates, etc) is all considered and expected to be done by a mother and that's what most companies think about. But for male employees, there is no real thought of "he has family responsibilities now so he won't be as available to focus or do all the work he once did".
This means that if you have a couple, only the woman's career is expected to stop or stiffle after having a kid, rather than both of them and that's because only the woman is expected to be the on-call and all-time parent, rather than both of them.

    • @obits3
      @obits3 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@ninawii5318 On the other hand, most women tend to seek husbands that make more money than them. As a natural result, it makes more sense for the husband to keep his career. There are exceptions, but companies deal with what is probable. I agree that women in general shouldn't be assumed to be potential mothers in every job interview, but you have to admit that someone deliberately taking a job only to get pregnant within a year is going to hurt their coworkers.

I had also never done the specific tasks in PhotoShop that they required - had I been given a prearranged interview as normal, I would probably have taught myself to do them; I've done them since and they're pretty easy. Needless to say, I didn't get the job, but even if I had I'm not sure I would have wanted to work for that employer.

Biggest red flag I encountered: when you turn up to an interview and there's an argument going on between an ex-employee and the staff about her not getting paid.
Three months later and I ended up doing the exact same thing. They jerked me around and stalled to avoid paying me, and ended up paying a round figure in cash (which was actually more than they owed me!) ...but only after my dad and I came in to kick up a stink about it.
A few months later I got a call from the Inland Revenue asking about these extra earnings, and took *immense* pleasure in ratting the company out as they'd clearly hired me off the books. Moral: if you're going to do that, treat the person you're hiring better.

not really a red flag but something that pissed me off, at my retail job (where like 60% of employee's are female), the 'uniforms' (polo shirts and a hoodie) are only available in mens sizes. I also had to wear a mens xxl hoodie my first year of working there (bearing in mind i'm usually a small in women's clothing)

At my first job, at a place somewhat similar to home depot etc (mostly for construction) I was an intern/in learning sales assistant.
As a an intern, I was already making less than minimum wage in my country. Legally I was also not allowed to be the only sales person in the building.
I was regularly told by the others "I'm going home early, you close up. Just remember to never kick out customers etc" This resulted in me about to close up, having to welcome in, and show customers kitchen concepts. Then as they were about to leave, another wanted to look at the very same thing. I often ended up working 1-2 hrs extra. Worse still, overtime for interns gets translated into "walk off time" instead. So basically 8 hrs of walkoff time, just equated to a day off. The problem was, it needed to be approved ahead of time.
The boss also told us regularly to call customers, and tell them to come buy stuff. Which is straight up illegal here, and also just awkward as heck

I was once told by the hiring manager that "my role would evolve and additional responsibilities would give me opportunities to prove myself even if I were to stay in the same position". That was his way of saying that my level of responsibility would increase without a commensurate increase in compensation. I wasted 2 years of my life at that job.

Its sadly normal behaviour for companies to employ you to do x,y and z and then simply add tasks possibly take 1 away but overall you will be doing far more than you were originally taken on for. Of course they will expect this with no increase in pay. Plus factor in when companies downsize often in a team of say 10 it will be reduced to 7 but the 7 remaining people will still have to do the same work as the 10 before

    • @hazelsunderstood6784
      @hazelsunderstood6784 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah, there is usually a very good reason for the "screw over".
      Think about it.
You are supposed to give a two week notice when you quit BUT a company layoff gives you no warning.
They are laying you off, the company/economy is having issues, it's not the people BUT they don't trust that people will show up to work, do their jobs, for the next two weeks to get that layoff package.
They give you NO warning, yet you have to give them a warning. You did nothing wrong, yet (if you don't want to burn that bridge - in case you're desperate in the future) you can not tell them the many things they did wrong to make you look for another job.
      Hypocrisy.
So it's never really an employee "screwing you over for no good reason". That's just some of the cool aide they make you drink when they start paying you a little more.

This is a complex topic but in general an 'idea' is not copyrightable, only the specific expression of that idea.
For example, saying X artist on the cover of Y magazine taken by Z photographer is likely not protected.
If the pitch was far more detailed, such as X artist, in front of their home, just as the sun was rising with the artist wearing their signature shirt promoting their new album while they hold the new album. Then off set their profile image on the cover of Y magazine, with the Artist lined up under the letter 'A' of the title. Make sure to use Z photographer, and ensure they use their P1000 camera, lens V on a tripod from 24 meters away from the artist and light baffles in an arc at 3.2 degrees focusing just above the artist's left shoulder. Then it 'might' be protected, because it's no longer just a general idea but a specific expression of that idea.

I used to work in a call centre and we were expected to answer calls up until the end of our shift. A call would last on average 7 minutes but in some cases, they could last over an hour. We also had to log our calls in our ticketing system and answer tickets raised online/via e-mail. Logging the calls wasn't bad because that can be done during the call but we were not given any time to wrap up what we had done. This meant in some cases, someone could be in a call which finishes after their shift ends but they now have e-mails/tickets they need to respond to before they can go. We were not allowed to leave any tickets open when we left or pass them to the queue for someone else to pick up. They also refused to pay for the extra time this took.
One time, my phone rang maybe 2-3 minutes before I was supposed to finish. I answered the phone and it ended up being a difficult customer and the call ended up taking almost 2 hours. When I brought it up with my manager that I had worked 2 hours overtime because of this, his response was "you should have been better at handling the call" and had no sympathy for me in the slightest. I wasn't even expecting overtime rates (1.5x or "time and a half"), just the standard rate as if it was a normal shift. His response annoyed me and I asked him to listen to the call recording and tell me how I could have handled it better. He refused to do so and when I brought it up with HR, they refused to do anything.
Making a long story short, I ended up taking it to small claims court and won. The company not only had to pay for the extra 2 hours of work at overtime rate instead of the standard rate I originally requested, they had to pay for my legal fees and an extra £500 to me for wasted time. This job was barely over minimum wage too so those 2 hours would have been

I want to use the "Is there anything about my resume that concerns you" line but I'm afraid that my wording and demeanor is going to make it sound like "I know my resume is shite, can I please convince you to hire me anyway?!" In other words, what if it makes me sound like I'm _not_ confident about my abilities? It also doesn't help that it's a different language and culture in my case. Maybe they'll even overanalyze it and think "maybe I _should_ be worried". Sometimes when you ask people to find fault in something, and there's nothing immediately obvious, they're gonna try to see anything as a fault just so they don't come up short.
But maybe instead of worrying about how to word it, I should just employ the tactic in whatever way comes naturally. I don't have a lot of experience and I'm largely self-taught but I've gotten jobs in coding (software/web dev) because I'm very open and openly myself, I have no problem talking about my faults but I can show my potential and how my different ways of thinking (high functioning autism) can be a huge asset. I don't bullshit anyone, and I'd honestly be scared sh*tless of getting a job on false pretenses, if people thought I was more capable than I actually am. So in a way, I've already been using the same mentality as in that original line.

The thing that you may not be aware of is after a few peak years you start to get pushed at the other end as well. I was reading that in NY age discrimination is kicking in at age 38 now, I certainly started to experience comments at age 42.. Many, MANY of my friends have been made redundant from extremely senior positions because they just become too expensive. I guess this is why the average age of an entrepreneur is actually 46.

And with the "do you have/plan on having children?" question, what is a good way to shut that down without being like "uhh, isn't that an inappropriate question?"
Like maybe "yes, I do, but [work-related response]" or "Not currently, but I hope to support my family through [work]." but I'm also pretty sure any good HR team would be like NO NO NO NO to interviewers asking that.
Treat yoself with a good HR team 👏

Lol, I am 16 years old and had two jobs (you know like at a baker or a restaurant, not like office bc I'm 16. For both jobs, I only worked there for a few days, but immediatly stopped, because I HAVE standards and DON'T take people's shit.
    My standards:
Fair pay, comfortable environment and no abuse of my naivity and ignorance as a teenager who's never had a job....
The amount of people that I've heard say "you have too high standards" really concerns me.

The person who was warned not to take the job… a similar thing happened to me. I was offered a job pretty well on the spot but a customer was in the vicinity and told me the reason the owner was hiring so quickly was because the other employees kept quitting because he wasn’t paying them! They weren’t getting their paychecks!

I used to work at a huge company (not startup) that implemented unlimited time off and it was awesome. I went from having only 2 weeks a year to taking up to 5 before feeling greedy. There are parameters, like not more than 3 weeks at a time, and if you want to take more than a week you have to ask at least a month before. And there are blocked periods of the year where you can't take any (when there's high activity), and you have to make sure your tasks are covered so you have to coordinate with your team.

Another one is when you interview for one thing and the the position is something else. I interviewed for a tech support job, and the day I started, learned I was the department manager. The pay was a lot but I still ran like a frightened deer.

I work at a place that has rubbish pay, no incentives, multiple job roles but pays for one role only and expects work for no pay. We are also expected to work at home for free. They utterly use and exploit the employees, not to mention the terrible bullying that goes on, it's a disgrace

For the perks part: the company with 3,000+ employees I applied for (and worked for on and off project-based for years) had a swimming pool, sauna, fully equipped gym, outdoor hobby equipment, meditation lounges, massage rooms etc, but I only got employed on constant 3 week contracts for years. No chance of planning your daily life for longer than that, and the shifts were all over the place; evening, very early morning, office hours, slightly shifted office hours, and all of these could be even earlier or later on weekends... I never knew beforehand what I would be handed the next 3 weeks. It might seem fancy but you can get yeeted at any time. For me it was when the middle management changed and they wanted to "shake things up in the office" AKA firing people who had been there for years.

Feels good that you are drawing light on Anti Union sentiments in companies. A big family usually doesn't have to worry about worked demands

Speaking of which, when is an appropriate time to take vacation during a new job? I've tried getting a job, but couldn't hold any for more than 2 or 3 months. Because for one thing, it was temporary employment and for the other, the company barely had anything to do. My job was to grind the samples as preperation for the various analysis, but we had a lot of calm days, with the worst ones only having up to 10 samples, after 4 hours for 4 hours. Grinding only requires a few minutes per sample.
Why do companies search for new employees when there's an unreliable amount of work? Granted, in my first week in that particular department, the shelves with the to be ground samples were half-full (I think it was about 20 boxes per row, divided by 8 employees me included, with new boxes full of samples incoming. But one or two weeks later, there were usually only up to 5 boxes max at once.
In the beginning, it took a lot of effort just to balance input and output, but soon after that, I yearned for effort. I hate it when I have nothing to do and just kind of sit there. I ended up playing a lot of Sudoku on my phone. Don't worry, the others did similar stuff in those situations.

I once was in charge of interviewing people for a job at a hotel that sucked and I was planning to quit bc they fudged my hours and stole pay from me. I was very frank with people about how much the job sucked. I said basically, if you *really* need a job bc otherwise you'll end up on the street, sure take the job - it's better than being homeless. However, if you have other options, choose those instead. In my last week I also turned people away at the reception desk by telling them we had a roach infestation, which was actually true. All that to say that you really ought to listen to current employees if they warn you away from the job.

My dad once made a good point about the question that often gets asked of women about whether they've got/are planning to have kids in that he would actually be more likely to hire a woman who does/is planning too as they're less geographically mobile as a result of their kids and therefore less likely to leave the company in the long-term, despite any maternity periods they might need off, just thought that was interesting- as you said though it still has no affect on a woman's ability to do a job whether she has/is planning to have kids or not

The last job that said we're a family didn't pay me a penny for 4 months hen I was working 7-9 days straight with 1 or two days off and blackballed me when I spoke up about it the same way my family treated me over opening my mouth about sexual abuse.
