  • The Jewish People is blessed when someone chooses to become Jewish. Over the course of history, an urban myth arose which suggests that rabbis must send potential converts away. This is not true, nor does it represent the beauty of Judaism's welcome. Rabbi Menachem Creditor works with many people on their journeys toward becoming Jewish. This is what he usually shares when someone comes to him for the first time, asking to join the Jewish People.

    Dear Friends,
the responses to this video have been overwhelming, in number and in emotion. Here's what I've been responding to many inquiries:
"welcome. glad to support you. here is the best website for starting your journey: www.myjewishlearning.com/, and here's a good book www.amazon.com/Jewish-Literacy-Important-Religion-History/dp/0688085067. are you in an area with a Jewish community? that's the best way to learn - with others."
strength to you all, and welcome! I'm so glad to support you on your Jewish Journey!

I'm 14 years old and I love judaism with all my heart. I'm not of the Jewish religion but I've been fascinated with it since I was 11. I few months ago I realized how much judaism means to me and I want to convert when I'm 18. Some people think I'm crazy for wanting to be a Jew but I have this wonderful feeling whenever I think of being one. I've studied nearly everyday about judaism and the traditions and the history of it. When I saw this video I didn't realize that there were rabbis that would be so excepting and it made me so happy to watch this video. I was so nervous to go in and talk to a rabbi about conversion and to ask questions that I still need answers for but now my confidence level has increased so much because I truly believe that this is what I want.

I've been thinking about my heritage for the past 5 years, and recently, I have been really drawn to learn more about Judaism - with the possibility of conversion... My father is from the city where Ethiopian Jews are from, haven’t confirmed if he is, or was and converted due to religious persecution, or is just from the city but no ties. Highly doubt it’s the latter, but would be nice to have a definitive answer and confirmation. He was never a part of my life and I grew up in an Orthodox Christian household (My mother's side). One of the things that has been holding me back is the fear of being turned away or not accepted. Glad to have found this video. Thank you, Rabbi :)

Finally a Rabbi that believes as it supposed to be. I am a born ISRAELITE a born Jew. And what our people need to understand more than anything is that even Chazal would not approve of the 3 turn down law and a big wake up call most of our people need is to know that all people al;ready know this. Furthermore in many cases there are many in our people who chose to be ;leaders who became idolaters now why do I say such a thing? they do not believe in conversion thus going against G-D's law in Exodus which is anyone who comes between man and G-D is idolatry. It's good to know we still have good RABANIM out there. I do the same as this is TIKUN OLAM to ve the LIGHT to all nations it means to be the TRUTH to all nations. I’ve been interested in Judaism my entire life. The religion itself, and the Jewish people, have always fascinated me, and I’ve always felt a strong pull towards it. I’ve had my doubts in the past, but because of them, I am now certain that converting is what I want to do. I know it’s going to be hard, but that makes it all the more intriguing, because at the end it’ll mean I’ll have earned my status.
The recent events in Pittsburgh were so tragic - I have no words. But this has solidified in my mind that this is what I want, and what I need, and who I am meant to be.
I’m turning 18 in June - I think I may have to wait until then to start this journey. I’m not sure. But I may not have the patience, and I may try to start a little bit too early,
Rabbi, your words have inspired and validated me, and I want to thank you for that. I could never express fully how much your words mean to me. Thank you so much.

Fortunately I passed my rejection stage but it took me 3 years only because exactly like you said it communicated that my rabbi was mean and racist as I mistakenly thought. But I still thought after the fact that the whole thing was so unnecessary because like you said just for someone to be brave enough to say they want to be a new to a stranger is tough enough. @joer736 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

well my process began when i was like 18. Don't wait ten years like me. It's very important that you see an Orthodox Rabbi to validate your conversion. Conversion is not simple, and Jews tend to judge based of which level conversion you have. I'm an Orthodox Jew, and I'm never questioned. Everywhere i go i accepted as a Jew. If you accept reform or conservative an Orthodox Jew may not consider your conversion valid. The important thing is if you have questions you must seek answers. Do you honestly feel Jewish? Do you have a connection with the Jewish people? Do you feel that the Torah is true, and nothing can be added or subtracted from it? Find a Rabbi, and go talk to one. They might discourage you, but that's part of the test :D

After seeking out several forms of Christianity I finally found Judaism instead. I had never felt more love in my heart than when I first started studying the ways of Judaism. My relationship with god has never been better, and I’m hoping to officially convert within the year. Thankyou so much for this video, it brought tears to my eyes

Doesnt the turning people away depend which type of Judaism one approaches? Reform Jews sound like they are more welcoming of interested converts than orthodox (or ultra Orthodox) Jews. I could be totally wrong though. Must converts legally change their names to Hebrew names?

I'm so glad I stumbled across this video. I have been studying Judaism for years, and even my wife wants to convert with me after I have shown her everything i know so far. I just wish I was near a synagogue that I could go to for conversion. Soon my wife will be finished with her degree, and we will finally be leaving this State (I live in Missoula, Montana with only one reform synagogue in it, and want to one day make aliyah, so this isn't a possible place to convert). I am now even more excited for the very soon approaching day that I may find a Rabbi like you (I pray) and begin my long anticipated journey into the rest of my life with people like you at its core! Shalom! Thank you!

Dear Rabbi, I have been living like a Jew many, many years, keeping Shabbat, all Jewish holidays and so on. In my soul I am a Jew, unfortunately, Beth Din in London gave me impossible fulfilment - moving house to a Jewish area even though my house is between 4 synagogues, London is overcrowded so impossible to exchange home with someone, I tried it for many years unsuccessfully.
I hope that Hashem understands my problem and will accept me anyway. Conversion is impossible for the mentioned reason!

With all the loneliness and doubt in our world it is not a surprise that anybody would want to belong to a group that has a rich storied history, in fact to me there seems to be something for every type of disposition which no doubt speaks volumes about how judaism has made it this far, the religions that accept ppl to come as they are, to find others and belong while searching out the quiet voice in the spirit, to be assured it is there by other believers is very comforting. Thanks to the rabbi for being there for others and may everyone who searches for peace find it

What do you think about the concept that there can be a difference between family genetics/ethnicity and family "souls". I was on the fence for converting since over a decade now, but this realization gave me peace enough. If I remember correctly there was a psychological study, that we find (to a degree!) more victims of abusive families (physically or through emotional deteoriation) among those wishing to convert to Judaism. *NOT* in general. But for me this psychological aspect was my primary thing going on. Belonging, finding a new home - and Judaism always felt really cozy for me as an outsider. And for me(!) that wasn't pure enough for a main motivation (haha, see you all in a few years!), that so far I gave up on the idea. For me it makes a difference if my soul/neshama is Jewish or is just lonesome. What I want to say is: I cheer for your heartwarming approach because yeah most people have their brave motives. But I also like the idea putting these motivations to a test.
When I look at many stories ans motivations of converts, many are "pure". Like stories where you think: This cannot be just coincidence or by chance. For me individually my psychological explanation worked but I would recommend to modt people to follow your heart and soul and listen to what your inner whisper tells you.
(It is evident for me though - even if this was definitely not my problem - that Germany relatively has an abnormal above average rate of converts to Judaism. One thing are many "German-Russians" with only a Jewish father but not a Jewish mother, but more strinkingly it is because of the Holocaust. That is so evident to me - psychoanalytically. So again, one cannot make generalizations because of that, but there will be *some* who have this - consciously or un-consciously - as a false motivation. So it is good to question the motivation of a convert. But you can be heartwarming and polite while doing so. So I applaud you for that.
In the end it's the old "give customers what they want" Vs. "what they need" question. ;-) For some. And some things can be better achieved in other ways, instead of converting to Judaism. Though I believe the concept of a converts neshama always have Jewish to be very true. Maybe not all of thr time, but most of the time.

At what point in the conversion is a person Jewish? Is it in the mikvah or when the pen hits the paper? I think there is some loophole about making me THINK my conversion is kosher when it isn’t. Or is there a grace period of tricking someone into a situation where it can be revoked? This is very important.

Rabbi Menachem Creditor How do I know if I’m really Jewish? The head of the Beis Din is hasidishe but he had modern rabbis take me to the mikvah. They say they are orthodox and keep Shabbos but I don’t know how strictly and they have beliefs like heretics that it’s okay for a woman to be a rabbi. I kept Shabbos for 4 weeks now thinking that I’m Jewish. What specifically is the halacha? There must be some fine print I don’t know about. I’m a normal person. I know all the proper ways to follow mitzvahs. I don’t buy into this “modern” meshuganas. I’m paranoid I can’t sleep.
