Reminds me of these two beautiful roaches I used to keep as pets called Simandoa cave roaches. They were discovered in a single cave in Guinea back in 2004 in the Simandou region (hence the name). The person who discovered them decided to bring some home with him to study. Luckily he did that because after they were discovered, the cave was scheduled to be mined for bauxite. They unfortunately became extinct in the wild. But they still exist today because of the guy who discovered them and the roach hobby. The hobby has been breeding them so they thrive
Fun fact: when I was young I went to my grandma’s house for vacation. (she lived in South Carolina) I was about to go to bed on the couch when a cockroach started running around on the floor and well. he dead brother
The last type of "extinction" - the ancestor species being considered extinct because the surviving modern descendants became too different - is often a source of dispute in historical linguistics too. Are Latin and Chagatai "dead" languages because nobody speaks the forms we know by those labels as native languages anymore? Or are they very much alive because modern French, Spanish, Italian etc / Uyghur, Uzbek etc? Thank you for making such a great video explaining the different types of extinction with simulations!
IRL though, the last extinction doesn't really happen much AFAIK. The leading model is called "Punctuated Equilibrium", I think. Basically, species stay constant without much change the vast majority of the time, and they only rapidly change or differentiate into different species in rapid bursts when conditions dictate.
It really depends on whether they can be considered the same species. If we could time travel and mate those two species would they produce fertile offspring? If yes, then they are the same species, if not, they're different species
From Cladistics, you've described the law of monophyly. Humans are still apes even though the progenitor ape population is no more. Spanish is Latin because it's descended from a progenitor Latin speaking population.
I like the new video format! This type of more conversational back-and-forth is a really neat way to try and tackle single issue from two perspectives at once.
If you like Primer you absolutely have to see the AI Controlled Econemy Video posted by Two Minute Papers last week, it even looks like a Primer Simulation and the results where Amazing and show just how good our future using AI will be.
Yep.This is the guide we all needed. Now I can speedrun to the extinction and set a universe record. Edit- Oh. I hadn't realised how many people had liked the comment. Thanks y'all😭
I thought that he would just mention the evolution simulator and I was like yeah go away let me watch the video but I like how he took over the episode alot
About the last part of whether or not a species actually go extinct, I once had a discussion with a biology teacher at my university about when we a species is considered a new evolved species. Like, when do humans stop consider themselves as "homo sapiens"? The conclusion was basically "at some point someone will say that we are too different than this X thousand years old skeleton to be of the same species, and that's when we stop being sapiens".
I have an idea for the evolution simulator. Have common small pellets that require maybe 5 pellets to reproduce, and less conmon large pellets that take two to reproduce. It might just help smaller species co exist with larger species.
Gosh y'all explained genetic drift so well T-T. Every time genetic drift was brought up in class I'd get confused and forget what it was (I recently took a class on evolution so now I understand it very well). But the way you guys explained it is so accurate but so simple too
I remember a video on this channel about extinction when I was like 5 or 6 and it scared me. Looking back on it now it no longer scary and watching this video reminded me of that video. I remember it being called something like The biggest extinction or something about a mysterious extinction, i forgot the name. Time flies by so fast. Ps: I don't know why but Jasper seems to be very shy or nervous though out this video if that is the case I feel horrible for him.
But by that logic, everything will come anew, too? I feel like if humans go extinct, eventually something similar to us will come up eventually. And when the Earth explodes, surely there are planets out there that will be able to emulate what the Sun does for our solar system. Maybe.
3:55 "Used to co-exist" is a strong statement! When dingoes (Domesticated dogs) were introduced by humans to Australia c. 4000 years ago, the marsupial Tasmanian Tiger population was decimated and nearly went extinct. They ended up surviving and adapting, but it was close. Likely, with enough time, either the tiger or the dingo would have an edge and slowly replace the suboptimal species.
