I love these stories like Adam with the surprise car. A few years ago my sister and I bought my parents a really nice photo printer, but it wasn't under the tree. We gave my dad a gift that was 13x19, 8x10 and 4x6 packs of photo printer paper all individually wrapped, then wrapped together into one multi-piece gift. My dad, being the super cool guy he is (Adam reminds me of him a lot) was happy about the paper even though he knew he didn't have a printer for it and didn't say a word or question it. After all the gift opening was done and the family was in the kitchen cooking I snuck the printer into his office and just waited. It was worth the effort to see the surprise on his face.
It is my experience that having Mythbusters on tv on christmas day, when you have relatives over whom you are a little uncomfortable around, is a FANTASTIC way to spark conversations and also a good distraction for any awkward silent periods too. It just seems to work for all parts of the day. In the background or actively watching it.
That christmas tree lights life hack? Saved me a headache when I had to redecorate. And yes my family watches the first two Die Hard movies every year, because they are perfectly inappropriate.
Tested re: canceling your AOL dial-up service. 7 years ago I used to work as an AOL customer service rep (outsourced, but still). These were post "retention" days, and we were instructed to allow easy cancellation. If you called and said "I want to cancel my account" we'd ask why, see if you had a high-speed option available, if you didn't want that we would cancel the dial-up (reverting you to a free email only account). If you said you were uninterested in that we would fully shut down the account. Total time on the phone: about 2.5 minutes.
Wow I never realized that was Carl Urban in LOTR. Yet I knew instantly which character you were talking about. It is true he disappears in his roles. I didn't realise he was in the 2nd Bourne movie until a while back when I watched the trilogy again. Almost Human was an excellent show btw, too bad Fox cancelled it.
I wonder how much of that show being canceled was Fox pulling a Firefly 2.0 or the time constraints of JJ abrams. Between fox's history of stupid decisions and JJ Abrams gett'n Star Wars I don't know whats more likely. I had thought that Carl Urban's time constraints would have also been a factor, but he's not been as prominent as I thought he would be.
Out of curiosity, I went to Karl Urban's IMDb page, where I saw that he played William Cooper in RED, and I just had this forehead-slapping 'duh!' moment. He really does disappear into the role. Here's my Karl Urban playlist: Two Towers, Red, The Bourne Supremacy, Dredd, Star Trek
The gifts that I usually give are what the people I buy for need. My mom makes a list and gives it to us, but we always get more. This year I thought ahead and I got tickets to your show in Chicago. My parents and I have never been to Chicago and didn't know how long it takes to get there. After driving 380 miles and being in the car for more than seven hours round trip. Don't get me wrong I would do this again in a heartbeat and also bring my brother and his fiance. I would also get better seats, I was up in the balcony. The whole experience for all of us was awesome. Never having been to Chicago I had never driven nor walked the streets that were so crowded other than in New York City. Being the only one to notice Jamie walking in front of the theater was fun, but at the same time not being able to get outside to say hi was sad. Another fun thing happened that made us all laugh when we got to the theater. We all thought that we were running late when we went to get something to eat before the show, but we had crossed from Eastern to Central time and had gotten an extra hour that we spent talking inside. This gift was for my parents, but it was something that we all enjoyed immensely and I wish to thank Jamie, Adam, and their whole crew for such a wonderful experience. Also, try to have one of the shows in Indy next time. That drive was crazy even for people who regularly drive to Philly from Indiana. I know its only a suggestion, but thanks for listening.
I listen the the audio podcast and this is the first time i saw the video version and when i was listening to the audio i couldnt imagin what the fish looked like
"Figuring out a way to get money from a market that is completely naive." - Adam Savage Wow. You just explained the entire insurance and banking industries.
if a company sends you a magazine or any service and you never give them concrete identification then i say let them send whatever they want until they get the point that you wont pay. then they will just stop sending it and maybe learn to only give products away after you get the money from your customer.
In the eighties I had a years subscription of playboy from publishers clearing house that my grandparents never knew about... I was 16 years old at the time... LOL!!
I somehow spent the years between ages 7 and 14 perpetually entered in the publishers clearinghouse sweepstakes, despite not being old enough to legally enter. I have no memory of ever filling out a form and mailing it to get entered, but ne day I started getting the mail confirming my entry, and so on and so forth. My Mom was aware of it, and explained to me that I was not going to really win all that stuff, but never bothered to try and stop them. They eventually wised up or something, because the forms quit showing up after several years.
Ive been die'n for you guys to do something movie related. A while ago you guys promised a mystery science theater 3000 style commentary over classics, but never delivered. :-(
I know you guys have done a fair amount of talking about movies (favorites, different directors, etc.), but I wonder if any of you (Adam, Norm, or Will) have any favorite cult classics. I have picked up a few fairly rare cult classics over the years (on DVD region 1 luckily) that I think you guys might enjoy such as Guyver (interesting post Star Wars Mark Hamill flick), Guyver 2: Dark Hero (widely accepted as better than the first), and Split Second with Rutger Hauer (made for tv movie from HBO).
i know what you could do with those fish.. paint them in another fishes colours. for instance doing a salmon as if its a clown fish or a bass as a yellow fin tuna or a great white shark :-)
I like the addition by Adam at the "Chalk and cheese as the British would say..." That particular saying is to illustrate a bad combination of ideas, not to show contrast between 2 things, like night and day. Nevermind... Adam won't read this...
Law and Order and The X Files take place in the same universe. Yes, they did a Law and Order/X Files/Homicide crossover. It was the season 5 episode "The Unusual Suspects"
This is the best podcast on youtube even better than Joe Rogan's. JRE moves very slow, it lasts for like 3 hours, it is kind of boring and its kind of shallow. I still like it even though its not nearly as entertaining as still untitled
I just don't get it, i've said it before. This is a great podcast but why is everything directed at Adam? Even when Will asks Norm a question, Norm looks at Adam and start replying to him.
Because the 'this is only a test' podcast is where they talk with each other (Most of the time without Adam). This podcast is specifically with Adam, hence the focus on him
My wife always tell me that I'm hard to shop for. So, as a solution, if I ever come across something I would like, I will go on amazon and save it to my wish list. So, all she has to do is go online and look at my list if she needs any ideas.
Re Gift Giving: I am in a lot of "Chinese" gift exchanges where gifts can be opened and stolen by other people (probably has a better name I don't know of) and am terrible for buying gifts I want for this. So hard not to just steal back my gift for myself, but I somehow feel that is probably looked down upon in those situations if your caught.
when my sister was little she found out my mums creditcard info and went to the disney store website and tried to oreder around £1000 worth of things luckly the credit card expiered the day before
Why not just exchange each other Amazon wish list with your friends? And have everyone a designated person to get a gift for and alternate each year, also delete the item that you receive if its on your wish list that way someone wont buy it again next year. That way everyone will get something they wanted and they wont know which one they'll be getting.
C'mon, you guys never do so many edits and all upfront. What the huhn? That is funny stuff about ordering something in the throes of creation and forgetting totally about it. I think that more speaks to how easy it is to buy something via computer these days. Think if you had to bounce around town to find something like two artificial fish? Luckily for historical American publishing, some of us honest, hard-working youths who pay for one subscription covers the dozen or so nickle-apiece models that you irresponsibly-parented freeloaders scarf up. Those comic "novelty" gag pages ads are awful. My mom worked for the ad agency that placed all of those ads in Marvel Comics. She once felt obliged to investigate some of the "gags" and the one I remember best is that the "itching powder" (thousands of laughs!) was really ground glass.

I love how you guys don't try to hide the fact that you prerecord these things way ahead of time! You guys even make jokes about it!
the number of times i've heard will say "we'll cut this part out" and the part has not been cut out
Agreed, Karl Urban is an amazing actor, first noticed him in LOTR, then to see his Bones character being so spot on, its crazy
o glad to hear i'm not the only one who listens to commentaries repeatedly
That christmas tree lights life hack? Saved me a headache when I had to redecorate. And yes my family watches the first two Die Hard movies every year, because they are perfectly inappropriate.
Norm, your recommendation to watch Black Mirror last week turned out to be incredible.

The key to a good Segway is not to mention its a Segway every time you have one. Lol

Definitely need an update on backtracking to the fish on head plan.
Karl Urban was awesome in Comanche Moon, the Lonesome Dove prequel. He and Steve Zahn (who co stars) both are somewhat unsung great actors.

Noticed the hammerhead shark hanging in the shop. Fiberglass? Life size? What's the story on him? Movie prop?
How can you be a Coen brothers fan and NOT have seen Miller's Crossing?
Adam, I'm quite curious to know if you remembered what the "fish" were for ??
all i can think of now is adam sitting in his den with a drink and a thought bubble of him ducttaping the fish to his head XD
Will uses the same high-efficiency thermal coffee flask that I use. I'm impressed with his good taste in coffeeware.
If you haven't noticed, Will is pretty into his coffee..

...and fast times at ridgemont high was the best Cohen brothers movie !!
no country for old men, close second.

darn.. i thought you guys brought on the coen brothers

What shirt is Norm wearing?
When I saw the video title and then those fish, I instantly thought Fargo (FX).
had to rewind 3 times to get the grandpa joke
+1 for mentioning the nsa and inept purchases
Is that mask with a black cloth on it supposed to be no face from spirited away
Yes there's a video about it on the channel
its Adams no face costume, they did a video on it, and he wore it in the behind comicon video from last year
trout mask replica?
I like the addition by Adam at the "Chalk and cheese as the British would say..."
That particular saying is to illustrate a bad combination of ideas, not to show contrast between 2 things, like night and day.
Nevermind... Adam won't read this...
29 min, the comparison you're looking for is Gary Oldman-esque
What's with all the jumping around at the beginning?
Law and Order and The X Files take place in the same universe.
Yes, they did a Law and Order/X Files/Homicide crossover. It was the season 5 episode "The Unusual Suspects"
Touch my bass!!!
i wish,i wish, to know what to do with the fish
He was going to do fish circling him... so that he could say he was people's chum.

Speaking of taxidermy... are you going to snag a stuffed racoon and turn it into Rocket?
"And one of the Mac Books just wouldn't sign on to the internet." That doesn't happen with PC's.
i think you mean "Almost Human" as the Karl Urban show that got cancelled by FOX.
Merry Christmas to everyone reading this :]
Hay Adam me and my sister watch mythbusters a lot on Netflix
No 'chalk and cheese' is about two things which don't work together.
Actually, in spain there's a tv channel that's mostly law and order, with a 50% spaghety westerns

It is fun to speed this up x2 xd
Tom Hardy is another actor that disappears in his roles like Karl Urban. He's done some excellent films if you need another film festival subject.
I wonder if Will has any kids
I believe he has a very young daughter.
Yeaaa I was being sarcastic!
Cool
Adams German pronunciation is adorable 😂. Sorry Adam.
did adam really say "the shizzle"? hahaha
nanananana
Funny, i never realised Adam was a stoner.
C'mon, you guys never do so many edits and all upfront. What the huhn?

wtf doesn't drink
we don't say chalk and cheese
