    So glad somebody else revered Phoenix's performance in The Master. I was just transfixed. I've never known any other modern actor to 'become' a character like he did in this. PSH was incredible in the movie but next to Phoenix he looked like am amateur. Amazing amazing amazing performance.

    There is a lot of confirmation bias on this issue. As a Veteran I may know better than most on this subject. Kids always seem to think they know much more than they actually do. The trick is not to confront the ignorance but to see a little bit of truth in their knowledge and build off of that. ❤️

    Got through a bit more of the podcast and want to correct a couple things.
    The Sea Org is basically their priesthood. These are the true believers, it makes it that much more difficult to leave, and makes it that much easier for Scientology to abuse them and for them to accept that abuse. They are cut off from the outside world, no movies, tv, newspapers, magazines, etc. They have no idea how to survive outside Scientology. All their family, all their friends, everything they know is Scientology. They leave, they cut themselves off from everything and everyone they have ever known, plus they lose their jobs, have no savings/money, or outside world skills. Most importantly, they honestly believe that Scientology will save the world, that is why so many say they couldn't leave because they would lose their "eternity".
    Norm says that they admit they did some terrible things, but won't admit what those terrible things are. This may be true in this movie (I haven't seen it yet) so blame the editing, they can't fit in everything! But it's not true of some of the people in the movie. Off the top of my head I do know that Marty Rathbun has been very clear about the fact that there was a culture of violence that he did push, punch, slap, and choke people at Miscavige's direction. Miscavige would say things like, stop coddling them, get tough and smack some sense into them. There are others who say the same. Also the beginning of Leah Remini's book is about all her failings and mistakes, she says she wanted to show that she is human and isn't trying to say she is perfect. In other words, she didn't want to point a finger and says they're bad, I'm good. Most who have left are like this.

    Anyone else notice that some of the things they talk about for cults and Scientology by them "having their own language" and "it's nice to have people around you who think the same way you do" is exactly what Fandom is like? Gamers have their own language and sayings and form bands and groups... just saying it reinforces Adam's comments that it's part of human nature.

    • @RiverFrontProduction
      @RiverFrontProduction 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      James Yee That's a good point, it's not just people who are religious or part of cults that have a strong desire to fit in but everyone in the world. We all conform to culture and subculture norms in order to fit in, whether its a cult, fandom, sport, music, nationality, hobby, our local community etc. etc. Some just go to more extremes than others.

    That slippery "parkinglot"? we have that in Denmark, its called "glatbane" or "slippery track"

  • @OyvindBjorgo
    @OyvindBjorgo 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Regarding the driving around on a really slippery parking lot sized area - we do that in Norway. Most of those facilities are big metal roads with remote controlled obstacles, where they cover the "roads" with some sort of oil and then spray water on it.
    Definitely the most fun part of my driving lessons! (Also, I... Ehrm... Kind of ruined the servo of the car. But my driving teacher told me it MUST have been a defective servo hose, because I was only driving like a slightly defensive race car driver.)

  • @dio52

    I think one of the reasons people react so strongly to Scientology is that they recognize it as a clearly manufactured religion, but seeing the fact that people sincerely believe it and it continues to grow makes them question what they may take for granted as true in their own religion (perhaps on a subconscious level).

    Just thought id share this because im a care guy. Double clutching isnt a race car thing. Its used on old cars that didnt have syncros, the exception to this is if you have a dog box transmission with no syncros and arent shifting it as it was intended to be used. Dont confuse double clutching with a duel clutch transmission which is a type of automated manual transmission.

    I learned to drive in the big city. After hours (10pm+) at a college campus parking lot. Although these days being there at that time, driving probably isn't your worst fear. The one advantage of the big city is that every inch of earth is lit by a powerful street lamp all night long. Even vacant parking lots. Or at least it was in the 80s.

    Difference between Cult and Religion is that Religion has Political Power.

    • @BramKaandorp
      @BramKaandorp 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Wicca has no political power. Still not a cult.
      The reason? Cults make it a point to control the behaviour of their members, to keep them from mingling with general culture as much as possible, or at the least to keep them from leaving the cult.
      Does this make Jehovah's Witnesses a cult? I think it does, but then again I think not all cults are created equal, and some cults are less dangerous (though still dangerous) than others.

    • @BenGray

    Talking about a BAD place to drive, try Atlanta! I do not drive, I never have. However, I have seen some hairy situations on the Atlanta streets that even I know was extremely illegal. If I had not been with the drivers that I was with, I would have, more than likely, been dead from the resulting accident that the person who was driving in the vehicle I was in avoided. And this has happened on 'several' occasions! It is pretty bad when someone who has never driven a day in his life can tell when someone else is breaking the law and driving recklessly. Some people here even run through rush hour traffic like it was the autobahn, weaving in and out of HEAVY traffic (Especially around I-285).

      Go Bogies Go the church of the flying spaghetti monster is meant to be a parody religion though, Scientology isn't. Pastarfarianism was meant to be a protest to American school boards wanting to teach creationism on equal footing as evolution.

      Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is just pure awesomeness and it's fantastic how far people are willing to push it with having a pasta strainer in their passport photo etc as "a religious headress".
