The sad things is many people nowadays don't reach out separately from social media. I had over 1500 FB friends and family. When I went off in Dec. I have only had 1 acquaintance and 2 family members reach out. I sent over 100 Christmas cards and got about 10.
Personally, I am not on social media anymore. I haven’t been for a couple of years. I think the The key is to create rather than to consume on social media. Create posts that are enlightening and encouraging rather than just scrolling to see what everyone else is doing. Also, the difference you want to make, you must determine if the difference you can make is broad or a matter of investing in those who are actually close to you in your physical, not virtual life. There was a time when what I posted on social media reached a lot of people. But it this season in my life, I’m finding a far greater difference and impact on others lives by being physically present to make a difference rather than virtually. Call me old-fashioned, that’s OK but I would rather make a difference in the lives of those around me by being around them instead of trying to make a difference in everyone’s lives via virtual presence.
Yes!! I deleted all of my social media accounts at the end of 2019 and it changed my life! After two years of being without it, I did decide to create a new Facebook account to access a couple of necessary Facebook Groups, but outside of that I don’t use it. I honestly have no desire to be on it and wouldn’t be if it weren’t for the groups.
I’m in full agreement. I haven’t wanted the rest for a very long time. I basically use Messenger. I tried to delete my FB account, but I would’ve lost Messenger.
Wow! You nailed this and so true! And, reading your new book! It's been a thoughtful and reflective way to end my days. Thanks for the time you spend to share your gift with words so succinctly and right to the point. Very few social media influencers get my attention...but, I always look forward to your video on Fridays. It's worth listening too. 👍😊🙏 Thanks! 🙂
Generations of people have done well despite never having had social media. It can be a tool to help people and I certainly have enjoyed learning things on TH-cam. I’ve also met some really nice people through my own small channel and get to chat with people around the world. There are some positive benefits from social media but it also can rob our time from being productive and actually getting out and spending time with family and friends.
I stop social media more than 2 years ago and I feel so much better now. I’ve learn more financial tools and a better way of living a productive life in you tube, your channel is one example.
Yes! We had a party line with 4 or 5 others. Original social media! Imagine if we could connect with strangers now that way instead of all the medias we have now!😀
For my circumstances, I can say I need social media esp. FB for half world miles apart back to my home, my family, relatives, and friends to communicate them. This way, I keep in touch with them and show our photos for our travels(when is done), any events and memories in our life. However my rules, I never ever post any personals or no dramas, no debating, no politics for the purposes of less attention getter on my page. That's my thoughts!
Great message! Technology, including social media, is a powerful tool. But time can certainly slip away from us while using it and become more a hinderance than an asset if we’re not careful.
You make great points. It’s the constant stream of ‘humble brags’ I cannot stand. I used to find LinkedIn useful professionally, but now it’s equally infected with drivel! It’s so hard to find what’s useful amongst all the noise on all platforms, and it’s increasingly impossible to avoid advertising too. I’m finding it less and less useful and more and more negative.
Very true! Technology has a lot of advantages in spreading a message to many people. I have learned so much from watching youtube, listening to podcasts, and reading blogs and have been positively influenced by this social media. But, there are many other ways which are more personable and more life altering. I am a teacher and have found that consistent, persistent influence has supported many students in their learning. It is hard to believe that this would be possible through social media. Many thanks for another thought provoking video.
This is so very true .But I follow someone on social media and within the story I'm following, which I'm a huge advocate for this certain thing going on .It inspired me to try phone voulenteering .How true .But it changed my life in the most powerful way .
I only really maintain social media these days because we live in a different country so it’s the easiest way to keep up with family and friends back home. It’s too easy to get sucked into if you’re not intentional about its use.
I have said often in prayers and among loved ones that I may be a twinkle is God's eye, you know when you walk into a room perhaps not certain of your place or position but you see that twinkle in your Father's eyes and you know all things are well and nothing else is of concern.
You don’t need social media to do good works in this world, but people need social media to bring the attention back to themselves through their works (even when their good works are fake).
Have none of these. I actually have a real life with real friends! I only discovered UTube during the lockdowns we had here ( the city with the longest lockdowns, worldwide) And don't watch a lot on it. However, as I had moved house just prior to covid..decided to declutter.... and the rest is history, as they say!
Americans are not really into social media they only think they do, most of their anxieties come from their misperceptions not out of reality of being too much in social media. They only realize that once they met Filipinos in social media.
If you have social media accounts - unfollow 95% of who you follow and life will be better. You don't need to read posts from someone you knew in high school posting about all kinds of nonsense
Isn't TH-cam social media? Also, I get your point and add that social media is a lifeline for some people who lack basic necessities. It's how some people learn what it's like, for example, to live in a house, and that knowledge helps them relate to the average person who, for example, sleeps in a bed, etc.
says this while uploading this video on youtube, a social media app... even if you dont need social media to be influential, how else will you spread the word.
There are more ways to make a difference in the world than being an influencer or "spreading the word" - if you listen to the video again, Joshua mentions several of these.
The only social media platform I use is TH-cam and that's for educational, information, and videos from channels like Joshua Becker. How are Twister, InstaGratification, Facepoke, and Tiktequila going to enhance my life?
Face to face is the original social media.
The sad things is many people nowadays don't reach out separately from social media. I had over 1500 FB friends and family. When I went off in Dec. I have only had 1 acquaintance and 2 family members reach out. I sent over 100 Christmas cards and got about 10.
Exactly. Totally agree
Perfect morning prayer at dawn here in Switzerland. So I close TH-cam to read "Things That Matter" before watering the garden🙂

You do have a TH-cam log in though. 😉
Another wonderful message. Thank you Joshua. Have a lovely weekend.
Great message and expressed so well. Thank you!
Great video & so very true. I think a lit of young people today are so wrapped in social media & themselves that they can't see past it to see others.
Well said young man. 👏👍
We never even had a phone, as a kid, and when we got one, we had an 8 party line, but, somehow, we got our messages around to each other.
