During the time when he fought Polpot, he was shot in his throat and until now more than 40 years after the war, everytime the weather changes, his throat hurts and seeing him like that hurts me as well. Remembered the VN soldiers escorting my family to the safety of the Thai border. Went to Saigon a few years backed, chatted with a former retired VN solder that stationed in Cambodia. Had a few beers and a long chat. Vietnam saved Cambodia at the lost of so any Viet troops.

Dude, Vietnam is one of the countries I personally respect. The Vietnamese are very resilient people who defeated bigger countries with more advanced technology like the Mongol Empire, France, the US and China. Pol Pot seriously thought he could easily exterminate the battle-hardened, war experienced Vietnamese population with his starving army only trained how to kill unarmed, defenseless slaves. Well, it only took 2 weeks until he was chased away from power. It's quite unfair how most countries still supported the Khmer Rouge after stopping a genocide, even though Vietnam stopped Pol Pot's Year Zero (which means destroying all of Cambodia's culture & institutions), something which might have permanently destroyed Cambodia. I agree. I m Australian and I respect Vietnamese people too. Even many USA and Australian soldiers conscripted to fight in Vietnam don't hate Vietnam at all, at least not now. They just wish war would never have occurred there in the first place. Vietnamese always think about Cambodia as brother and we were taught in school that Cambodians are brothers from a country next door. Similar to Laos. It is hurt to know some Cambodian saw Vietnamese as enemy with slogan like Youn etc. During the war time with Pol Pot, Vietnam was very poor and could not make enough food/rice to eat. But we mixed other kind of grains into the rice to eat in order to save & send rice to help Cambodian people torn by the war for many years. Hope Cambodians know that.

Man, a indian guy once accused EA/SEA of being "racist and evil despite beibg good looking" because he thought EA and SEA were responsible of excluding South Asians from being refered as asian in english speaking countries. I had to educate him about the usage of the word asian refering to phenotype and the fact India wanted to associate lot more with EA/SEA near the year 2016 due to rise of softpower(anime,kpop, jpop, kdrama) from japan and korea. As an American, I've just been reading about Pol Pot and this conflict today. When I saw the US on the "Allied" side with Pol Pot on Wikipedia, it made me feel sick. That's right there with supporting Osama bin Laden against the Soviets, on the list of despicable US power plays. Thank goodness Vietnam managed to erase the Khmer Rouge regardless (and then held off Mao's China too!) and come out on top. So even though I can't do anything about my runaway government, at least I can extend my apology for everything Vietnam has been put through, and my profound admiration for all it has withstood. If alien space ships ever come to try and conquer Earth, they'll never take Vietnam.
When our heroic army was struggling to liberate Cambodia, many countries called us "invaders" and even supported Pol Pot. Now, no one apologies us. NO ONE. ... and, from my point of view, there are some neo-Khmer Rouge in Cambodia now, who claim that South-western Vietnam is theirs.
My grandfather was a second lieutenant in the Army of the Republic of Vietnam, after liberation in 1975 he went to re-education for 1 year and 7 months and when he heard that the Khmer Rouge killed Ba Chuc people in An Giang, my grandfather applied. enlisted as a soldier. As the Vietnam People's Army, to this day he still remembers when he was young, he told me one sentence: “The Viet Cong are also Vietnamese, so they are not my enemies, but the Khmer Rouge and China is the enemy I hate the most, pick up a gun and fight them, I fight with all my heart, I fight because I'm a united Vietnamese, not a ARVN soldier or a Viet Cong Guerrila ".

I used to participate in protecting the Cambodian people. Currently, there are still many old friends in Cambodia. Cambodian people they are honest and lovely. I have always loved them. Younger generations later are oriented by the West and China, so they don't understand history correctly, I hope Cambodians will always consider Vietnam as a Brother. Younger generations of cambodian are brainwashed by nationalists who want's power and money. They just want to spread false information so that cambodian would believe and support them to topple the Hun Sen's government so they can be elected to government's posts and make their party powerful to be able to create a new governement. Nationalists incited violence and hatred towards vietnam, thailand, and laos. They want to bring back the khmer empire when this empire occupied almost all of thailand and most of lao and a few provinces in southernmost of vietnam.

Another thing I should mention to the people who say that Vietnam invading Cambodia was a bad thing. Google something called the Ba Chúc massacre, A massacre of Vietnemese civilians by the Khmer Rouge, I think that gave them PLENTY of good reason to fight back. As far as I'm concerned, their invasion was a good thing, because they did god's work by cleaning out the Khmer Rouge.

Actually 200 thousand soldier AND 400 thousand of serving force and reinforcement on the 2nd line. Chinese PLA last big war at that time is the Korean War. They actually don't know how to fight against Vietnam, a country that faced with more bomb of whole WW2. But after the defeat in 1979, Deng reformed the army and changed the tactic, and PLA made Vietnamese more difficult to protect the border. In 1984 we loss 1000 troops in A DAY when counter the Chinese .
They didn't actually replled it. The pla took all the provincial capitals they expected to capture and then leaved. The losses were bigger than they thought, same as overall performance but they achieved their objetive. The whole thing ended in a few weeks.

My family arrived in the US in the 80s. A friend of Mines father said that he was in one of the khmer Rouges labor camps and had been shot down and left to die in a rice paddy. The vietnamese liberated the camp and saved him

My Viet dad spent his youth in fighting Polpot and liberating Vietnam. Remembered the VN soldiers escorting my family to the safety of the Thai border. Went to Saigon a few years backed, chatted with a former retired VN solder that stationed in Cambodia. Had a few beers and a long chat. Vietnam saved Cambodia at the lost of so any Viet troops.

Dude, Vietnam is one of the countries I personally respect. The Vietnamese are very resilient people who defeated bigger countries with more advanced technology like the Mongol Empire, France, the US and China. Pol Pot seriously thought he could easily exterminate the battle-hardened, war experienced Vietnamese population with his starving army only trained how to kill unarmed, defenseless slaves. Well, it only took 2 weeks until he was chased away from power. It's quite unfair how most countries still supported the Khmer Rouge after stopping a genocide, even though Vietnam stopped Pol Pot's Year Zero (which means destroying all of Cambodia's culture & institutions), something which might have permanently destroyed Cambodia. However, Vietnam then also kicked China's ass for their failed attempt to restore the Khmer Rouge. Massive respect to Vietnam from Austria. 🇻🇳💪

Vietnamese always think about Cambodia as brother and we were taught in school that Cambodians are brothers from a country next door. Similar to Laos. It is hurt to know some Cambodian saw Vietnamese as enemy with slogan like Youn etc. During the war time with Pol Pot, Vietnam was very poor and could not make enough food/rice to eat. But we mixed other kind of grains into the rice to eat in order to save & send rice to help Cambodian people torn by the war for many years. Hope Cambodians know that.

Man, a indian guy once accused EA/SEA of being "racist and evil despite beibg good looking" because he thought EA and SEA were responsible of excluding South Asians from being refered as asian in english speaking countries.

As an American, I've just been reading about Pol Pot and this conflict today. When I saw the US on the "Allied" side with Pol Pot on Wikipedia, it made me feel sick. That's right there with supporting Osama bin Laden against the Soviets, on the list of despicable US power plays. Thank goodness Vietnam managed to erase the Khmer Rouge regardless (and then held off Mao's China too!) and come out on top.
So even though I can't do anything about my runaway government, at least I can extend my apology for everything Vietnam has been put through, and my profound admiration for all it has withstood. If alien space ships ever come to try and conquer Earth, they'll never take Vietnam.

As the Vietnam People's Army, to this day he still remembers when he was young, he told me one sentence: “The Viet Cong are also Vietnamese, so they are not my enemies, but the Khmer Rouge and China is the enemy I hate the most, pick up a gun and fight them, I fight with all my heart, I fight because I'm a united Vietnamese, not a ARVN soldier or a Viet Cong Guerrila ".

I used to participate in protecting the Cambodian people. Currently, there are still many old friends in Cambodia. Cambodian people they are honest and lovely. I have always loved them. Younger generations later are oriented by the West and China, so they don't understand history correctly, I hope Cambodians will always consider Vietnam as a Brother. We always consider Laos and Cambodia as our Brothers.
Younger generations of cambodian are brainwashed by nationalists who want's power and money. They just want to spread false information so that cambodian would believe and support them to topple the Hun Sen's government so they can be elected to government's posts and make their party powerful to be able to create a new governement. Nationalists incited violence and hatred towards vietnam, thailand, and laos. They want to bring back the khmer empire when this empire occupied almost all of thailand and most of lao and a few provinces in southernmost of vietnam.

Another thing I should mention to the people who say that Vietnam invading Cambodia was a bad thing. Google something called the Ba Chúc massacre, A massacre of Vietnemese civilians by the Khmer Rouge, I think that gave them PLENTY of good reason to fight back. As far as I'm concerned, their invasion was a good thing, because they did god's work by cleaning out the Khmer Rouge.

Roughly at the same time majority of their forces were involved in Cambodia, they repelled Chinese 200 000 men strong invasion with forces of border guards and some reserve units. After Chinese got their asses kicked, they said that actualy they got what they wanted so they won, and retreated back north xD
Actually 200 thousand soldier AND 400 thousand of serving force and reinforcement on the 2nd line. Chinese PLA last big war at that time is the Korean War. They actually don't know how to fight against Vietnam, a country that faced with more bomb of whole WW2. But after the defeat in 1979, Deng reformed the army and changed the tactic, and PLA made Vietnamese more difficult to protect the border. In 1984 we loss 1000 troops in A DAY when counter the Chinese .
They didn't actually replled it. The pla took all the provincial capitals they expected to capture and then leaved. The losses were bigger than they thought, same as overall performance but they achieved their objetive. The whole thing ended in a few weeks.

Vietnam defeated French, American, Chinese and Red Khmers in a span of less than 30 years. And they also had a civil war somewhere in between of all these wars. Even if all that was possible because of USSR help, Vietnamese still proved to be not only fast learners and good soldiers, but also brilliant generals.
Vietnam got help from the Union and China when it came to fighting the US, China later fucked up.

Some of these Vietnamese Peoples Army or VPA who liberated Cambodia from the Ruthless and Barberic Pol Pot are from the former North Vietnamese Army or NVA who fought the France in the Diem Bin Phu in 1954 and US in the fall of Saigon in 1975 . While some of these Former South Vietnamese Armed Forces or ARVN surrendered to the North were reeducated and absorbed in the VPA
Probably only in Vietnam can this happen where two soldiers on the other side of the front line fight together, something that South Korea and North Korea can hardly do.
