    The Vietnamese were the most formidable fighting force on the planet for about 50 years. Beat everyone who occupied their country and outfought all regional rivals. They could still probably outfight China on their own turf.

      that's because of their way of war. Chinese generals use the same "sea of people" tactics as their earlier spear/sword era (you can see this in Chinese movies). In 1979, China used livestock and civilians moving forward as human shields for its troops in the rear. Surviving soldiers in Vietnam recounted that they had to shoot guns almost continuously and felt like it was impossible to kill them all, they were too many.
      The terrain in the Vietnam-China border area was not suitable for the type of Chinese warfare at that time. Forests and mountains are abundant, it is suitable for the type of guerrilla warfare of Vietnam.

    Prince Sihanouk, idolized by his people, sold out his country to the Khmer Rouge and is unfortunately the man most responsible for their coming to power.
    Had Sihanouk had simply put his foot down when he should have, as the Viet Cong were setting up and expanding supply lines on Cambodian soil, he would never have been deposed. The Cambodian government would have retained much-needed legitimacy with his presence.
    Sihanouk then joining forces with the Khmer Rouge instead, in a desperate attempt to regain power (despite knowing they were communists and hated him), was completely unconscionable. Sihanouk’s endorsement signaled to the Cambodian people that the Khmer Rouge could be trusted.
    Sure enough as soon as they came to power, the Khmer Rouge disposed of him and he fled to China, while his people suffered under one of the worst regimes in human history.
    Sihanouk’s reputation was somewhat rehabilitated by becoming the face of the new Cambodia after the end of the Cold War, with his restoration as king. However for all the people who try to blame those who were actually fighting against the Khmer Rouge (namely America and South Vietnam) for their rise, they should instead point the finger at the man who refused to fight them, and in fact tried to ride on their backs into power.

    • @TheLocalLt
      @TheLocalLt 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@jemappllesphan6143 of course the North Vietnamese were ultimately responsible for the warfare in the region and for violating other countries’ borders. With regards to Cambodia specifically, the series of actions taken by Sihanouk over the course of a decade in response to this crisis were directly responsible for the Khmer Rouge gaining power.
      My comment was mainly pushing back against those who blame America for the rise of the Khmer Rouge.

Many people nowadays in capitalist countries demand communist policies without even knowing it, like workers union, companies are trying their best to prevent this.

    The Red Khmer only suffer 10k casualties? That's kinda weird, they already lost like 15k in 1979 and not to mention the casualties from 1979 to 1989, I think they suffer nearly 100k casualties if you count the wounded. The casualties of Vietnam in the video is the total casualties of the entire combine force of Vietnam and their Cambodian allies not Vietnam alone. Its cool that you make this video but please do it right, I know English speaker hate us Vietnamese but please dont be that bias.

    • @Caesarius

      However, I couldn´t find any good information on that. I also beg to differ that the Khmer had exact records of their casualties.

    Well done video, grateful to you that you manage to get this film out so the world would understand more about this complex war. I am the girl in Freemantle War In Cambodia. I agreed everything that you had said and pointed about the war in Cambodia except one part. It's about that the Cambodians' officials were corrupted & so forth, i agreed whole heartedly, but one crucial factor about the civilians' decisions to joint the Khmer Rouge ( the feather that breaks the camel's back) were due to the facts that it was the power hungry Sihanouk that broadcast on N. Vietnam's and Chinese's radio to have the Khmer citizens resist Lon Nol's policy and fight against his forces. This caused chaos & massive attitude changes in Khmer peasants, the poor and uneducated, our parents, the elderly to turn their back to us students, the intellectuals. So the results was why the Khmer Rouge forces rose so much and eventually we lost the war. Of cource Lon Nol's official were so corrupted, counting from his own brother Lon Non ( one of the general) on down. I was there flesh and blood. I was 19 years old when Sihanouk was ousted from power. I could speaks and read English, French besides Khmer language very well. so i could follow the News around the world and smart enough to realized what this war was about. People accuse me of relating to US , CIA, and even Lon Nol's soldier. That the video that i was in was just a propaganda. All of this is not true, i was just an unknown student at the time. 1 brutal genocide by polpot with nearly 3 million people both Cambodian and Vietnamese at the border and island. However, many Cambodians now still don't want to understand, they blame Vietnam for invading Cambodia, living after nearly 50 years of peace but they don't understand the value of peace, they don't think and find a way building a rich and strong country, they just go to see a beautiful place in Vietnam and provoke that it is Vietnam taking over their land for example Ho Chi Minh city, Phu Quoc island, they don't understand who is who are enemies, they don't understand to have peace and escape the genocide the blood of Vietnamese soldiers has poured into the river in their country, sadly for such people, Vietnam always wants brothers Like Cambodia, Laos is our friend to keep peace and stability, to build a strong country together.

    2:14 this is a very interesting take on the conflict, not gonna lie. The other sources I checked, including that of Cambodian sources, stated that the North Vietnamese only trained the Khmer Rouge. And there was no invasion by the NVA into Cambodia, but instead the US launched a series of bombardment upon the request of Lon Nol which result in his support plummeting and the Khmer Rouge swelling in ranks with sympathizer and anti-US sentiment. I am not saying you are wrong, but I think your explanation on how the Khmer Rouge gaining supporters just because the Vietnamese were handing lands to them doesn't really hold up. If Lon Nol had US military backing, then Khmer Rouge force conscripting uncooperative recruits would have worked against their interest, as it increase chance of deflectors revealing their location to the authority and get annihilated by US forces.

    • @robfl100
      @robfl100 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There was already a presence of NVA troops, and VC paramilitaries in the east of the country along the border, but then Lon Nol demanded that they leave after the coup. In response, the NVA launched a larger offensive in order to remove him from power. So they didn't technically invade, they just expanded their operations. Apparently, they also did so directly at the request of Pol Pot's 2nd in command, Nuon Chea. When you seize 40 percent of a country, and then hand it over to a group of radical insurgents, it shouldn't really come as a surprise when they are successfully able to overthrow the government.

    • @kaleidoscope3234

      @@robfl100 Lands alone isn't sufficient and it is actually worthless if anything. The nature of Vietnam war is not the same as the total war you seen in world war I and II. Just because you have the lands, doesn't mean you have the people, and the people are what really important. If Khmer Rouge didn't have support of the local population, there is nothin gonna stop some dissenting villagers to point the American towards their positons. My Lai massacre didn't happen for no reason you know.
      Lon Nol wasn't an internationally recognized government of Cambodia, NVA had no legal obligation to comply his demand. King Sihanuk, the legal leader of Cambodia and the one who gave permission for NVA to operate inside Cambodia, sided with Cambodia communist party (before it was taken over by Khmer Rouge. Sihanuk's involvement made the Khmer Rouge a lot more than just radical insurgent and was the real reason the NVA involved in Cambodia affairs.
      Not to mention, this is the only source that I have heard that the NVA actively invaded Cambodia, as even sources from Cambodia themselves all stated that this was a civil war and only Lon Nol had help from the USA. The theory itself doesn't really hold much candle. On one hand there is no real reason for NVA to intervene, since Lon Nol is an illegitimate leader and he lack both the influence and power to make them leave. And on the other hand the major 1969 Spring assault was on the horizon, why would the NVA launch on attack that on an equal scale of their Spring assault non-chalantly on the flat plain of Cambodia. This theory simply doesn't make sense politically and fail to fit with Giap's usual war strategy and decision making. You gonna need a real convincing source to back it up.

      Do you know why Sihanouk allow north Vietnam to enter Cambodia territory? This was because Hochiminh agreed that after they defeated south Vietnam, they would return cochinchine territory to Cambodia. However, Hochiminh broke promise, and the presence of NVA was not withdrawn from Cambodia territory. In this circumstance, Sihanouk let Lon nol to form new government for asking help from United State but acted as if Lon nol really coupes him. The purpose of letting Lon nol run the country was to solve with the presence of NVA.
      Later on, Sihanouk wanted to come back in power, and to do this he asked China to help Khmer Rouge and attacked Vietnam- starting from 1975 onward. Later on 1979, Vietnam took this excuse to invade Cambodia.

Then Cambodia experienced a great decline to the point that we needed French to protect us from vietnam and Thailand for 99 years. from here if you follow closely to vietnam policies of interfering and manipulating in Cambodia you would appreciate why I don't appreciate your "savour" or liberation of my people or myself. Without vietnamese invasion of Cambodia in 1970, Pol Pot and Hun Sen would never get the power in 1975. Then there were vietnamese sleeper and spies like the guy named DUC who was the head of the infamous Toul Slaeng Prison in Phnom Penh along with the Khmer Viet Minh(Vietnamese faction: hun Sen people) who worked along with Pol Pot's people. It was in 1977 that these people tried the failed coup against Pol Pot. Then in 1978 Pol Pot started the purges of the DUC people and Khmer Viet minh(Hun sEn's people). That was when vietnam knew that they had no other option but to do a full scale invasion to save their people and hun sen's people, so that the regime in Phnom Penh would be loyal and obedience to their interest like today. The honeymoon between them ended really early. Nobody trust anybody when Pol Pot sent soldiers to recapture the Koh Tral island, which is now called pho quoc in 1975. They did surprisingly well, capturing Phnom Penh in a little under 2 weeks. In my opinion, the invasion wasn't as much of a liberation, more of a "please fucking stop attacking our land and people". I'm guessing Pol Pot executing anyone with Vietnamese military training played a role in this or maybe massacring his troops in the Eastern zone. The problem was that Thailand was sheltering the Khmer Rouge's leadership and they would launch attacks from Thailand. By the way, the Khmer Rouge also attacked Thai territory prior to Vietnam's invasion, albeit on a smaller scale which really proves the saying, "The enemy of my enemy is my friend". The US support for the Khmer Rouge unofficially/indirectly, through things like blocking Vietnam from the IMF, or officially, like recognising the CGDK and by extension the Khmer Rouge at the UN also further proves the saying. Thailand sheltering the Khmer Rouge Vietnam did attack into Thai territories trying to get the Khmer Rouge fighters, didn't really finish them off. Also resulted in the death of Thai military and civilians. Then there was the K5 plan, which had mixed results in that some parts worked, like training up the PRK's army, and other parts were not effective, like the minelaying. But in the end, Vietnam never wanted to stay in Cambodia, they tried to leave after 1979, provided Pol Pot didn't come back to power, which was denied by China and the US. As quoted in (Second Life, Second Death: The Khmer Rouge After 1978), "After 1979, Vietnamese diplomatic strategy had aimed at a diplomatic settlement in which they would withdraw in return for a political settlement excluding the Khmer Rouge from power. The CGDK, ASEAN, China and the US all insisted that this was unacceptable. Vietnam could not be permitted to benefit from its invasion". I couldn't really fact check this but there is another reason they wanted to get tf out of Cambodia. The sanctions and restrictions on economic aid due to the invasion meant that the economy was suffering, meaning Vietnam (and by extension PRK) was relying HEAVILY on Soviet aid, in the area of over a billion dollars in aid every year. Then there was the brief Sino-Vietnamese invasion as well. The video correctly stated that Vietnam attacked and pulled back it troops. What it doesn't mention was that the Vietnamese army once again invaded Cambodia and then pulled it troops back again, making that 2 warning invasions that didn't deter Pol Pot.
      You are correct that it's not as heavily publicised in Vietnam and a lot of the younger generations don't really remember the event, heck they don't even remember the Vietnam War, called the American War there. But still, you go to a Khmer Rouge/Pol Pot/Cambodian Genocide video and the comments are full of people saying "The world owes Vietnam an apology". Also again, not a lot of people know about Pol Pot or the Khmer Rouge. Amongst my friends, yes I know it's not a really accurate representation of a bigger audience, only a handful knows about them and even fewer know about their downfall.

In terms of support most of ASEAN support all other although they are more keen on non communist faction. The only active foreign power that involved in direct confrontation are Thailand and China due to Vietnam encroachment of their border in attempt to hunt the Khmer which play directly with their card a conflict with Cambodia as source of ally and supply, as the latter their alliance with Khmer.
