You 100% just saw the beginning of Mt Doom.
I think Adar does believe he killed Sauron, and I’m curious on why he didn’t recognize Halbrand (an elf wouldn’t just forget someone), and asked him who he was at the end 👀
I also have no idea how they will survive the eruption. Makes me wonder if the stranger will have anything to do with it?
      Glad you guys enjoyed that!

I am sorry that I am advertising for another TH-cam channel but i feel like it’s necessary. There is a new channel for this series called rings and realms and they are analyzing the series by people who are really capable and know basically everything about Tolkien’s world. The people who just trash this series just want to hate. If you see how much hidden lore is in this series without even having a lot of the rights it’s amazing. The showmakers have really thought this series threw but people just don’t see the beauty of it. Despite some problems, obviously everyone has their own taste, but this blinded hate is just not necessary.
In the end it’s about If you want to hate an adaption because it’s an adaption or do you want to understand why they did what they did. And what they did is often really clever without people giving credit to them, probably because they just don’t want to understand it

@@cubonemaker5080 Sauron was a Maiar that changed shapes a lot. Their physical bodies can die but then won't, and will essentially come back in another form. @@petermisberg732 I think unfortunately the lotr jackson movies aren't true to the spirit of tolkiens work. Tolkien will stop mid battle and describe the grass and foliage and its beauty. It's meant to be slow, very slow, and a lot of world building. It doesn't translate super well to tv so they sped a lot of things up during the jacksons movies. Now rings of power is speeding up literal centuries, so it's even harder to do.

@@Saphthings In the end its an adaptation and you cant just make a movie or a series from a book without changing things thats just not possible. Just compare the length of the audiobook with the movie you have to cut so much and still include a lot of pictures about the surroundings. Therefore a series is a great way to portrait tolkiens world they have so much more time. I would just hope that people are more appreciative that they get a new look at the world tolkien created because the showrunners definitly thought a lot about how they do it.

So the orcs can have their home in Mordor. I think most of what is coming out of that eruption is ash and smoke. Cause several of those characters have to survive. Something I've noticed, there were no horses in Middle Earth until Numenor arrives. This is canonical, but would have happened long before this. It explains Galadriel's love for the horse ride, since she didn't have a horse for centuries. Elves had horses in Valinor, but didn't take them, as I understand. It doesn't explain how Halbrand is so skilled a rider, though.

    • @majkus
      @majkus 2 ปีที่แล้ว

There were horses in Middle-earth. Hurin's horse was named Aroch ('Roch' being the Sindarin word for 'horse' and the source of the name 'Rohan'). Heck, the first Vala to discover that the Elves had awakened was Orome the hunter, riding a horse.
I cannot tell if it is intentional that there are no horses shown in Middle-earth in this show. It does make the transit between Lindon and Eregion sort of ridiculous.

@@majkus Yeah, I was going through and reading more after I posted. There are debates on who actually used horses after the return to Valinor, but they're definitely doing something hinky with horses in RoP. I'd already noticed that the humans had cattle, but no other beasts of burden when they left their villages. Generally, you use man power when the land isn't suited to burden beasts. Not a problem in the Southlands. Linden elves should have had some beasts, somehow. Unless, of course, they teleport.

Adar had the orcs make tunnels to channel the water instead to the volcano, causing a thermal explosion that set off the volcano. That's actually how a lot of eruptions happen. no, thats not how volcanos erupt... they do it the tension from the rising magma grows too big or if the magma flows underground hit the groundwater itself and the expanding steam has no way to escape... here it obvious had this way to release all the steam... through that gigantic hole in the cavern, that is quiet huge... its the same principle as a water kettle..

    • @Saphthings
      @Saphthings 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

@Belegur Hi, this is Saphthings, the person with a degree in physics and geology...
      You also literally did this:
Me: "A lot of Volcanoes erupt when magma comes into contact with water"
You: "No, that's not how they erupt, they usually erupt when the magma comes into contact with groundwater"... ...
You even literally used a "_WATER_ kettle" as an example...
Here's one of the excerpts from one of the studies I was part with called. "Explosive volcanoes fueled by water":
"University of Oregon geologists have tapped water in surface rocks to show how magma forms deep underground and produces explosive volcanoes in the Cascade Range.
"Water is a key player," says Paul J. Wallace, a professor in the UO's Department of Geological Sciences and coauthor of a paper in the May issue of Nature Geoscience. "It's important not just for understanding how you make magma and volcanoes, but also because the big volcanoes that we have in the Cascades -- like Mount Lassen and Mount St. Helens -- tend to erupt explosively, in part because they have lots of water.
The discovery helps solve a puzzle about plate tectonics and Earth's deep water cycle beneath the Pacific Ring of Fire, which scientists began studying in the 1960s to understand the region's propensity for big earthquakes and explosive volcanoes. The ring stretches from New Zealand, along the eastern edge of Asia, north across the Aleutian Islands of Alaska and south along the coast of North and South America. It contains more than 75 percent of the planet's volcanoes.
To understand how water affects subduction of the oceanic plate, in which layers of different rock types sink into the mantle, the UO team studied hydrogen isotopes in water contained in tiny blobs of glass trapped in olivine crystals in basalt.
A five-member team, led by UO doctoral student Kristina J. Walowski, methodically examined water and other elements contained in olivine-rich basalt samples that were gathered from cinder cone volcanoes that surround Lassen Peak in Northern California, at the southern edge of the Cascade chain.
That combination opened a window on how rising temperatures during subduction drive water out of different parts of the subducted oceanic crust, Walowski said. Water migrates upwards and causes the top of the subducted oceanic crust to melt, producing magma beneath the Cascade volcanoes.
The key part of the study, Wallace said, involved hydrogen isotopes. "Most of the hydrogen in water contains a single proton," he said. "But there's also a heavy isotope, deuterium, which has a neutron in addition to the proton. It is important to measure the ratio of the two isotopes. We use this ratio as a thermometer, or probe, to study what's happening deep inside the earth."
"Melting of the subducting oceanic crust and the mantle rock above it would not be possible without the addition of water," Walowski said. "Once the melts reach the surface, the water can directly affect the explosiveness of magma. However, evidence for this information is lost to the atmosphere during violent eruptions."
But thanks for trying to mansplain what I actually do by rephrasing what I actually said.
So, like I said, contact between water and magma is how a lot of volcanoes erupt... Unless you thought I meant that volcanoes usually erupt from ancient water dams being opened by a hellblade and being channeled into orc dug tunnels... Where I would then just plain question your sanity, not your reading comprehension.
And yes, even rain can induce an eruption.

What we witnessed at the end is a fairly realistic volcanic eruption with some fantasy elements mixed in. Water flowing into magma is one of the main mechanics for volcanic eruptions. In this type of eruption the super heated magma instantly flash boils the water causing a super powerful explosion the force of which easily compromises the stone in the mountain causing the main eruption. The blast that emerges from the mountain is not a pyroclastic flow like the one that destroyed Pompeii it is instead a cloud of steam mixed with a variety of dirt particles racing across the lands at high speeds. Due to the sheer distance the mountain is from the town by the time the steam reaches them it has lost most of its energy so while it might be harmful it shouldn't be instantly lethal to most people.
Another note is that Sauron is a higher type of being like Gandalf. The Balrog in Fellowship did kill Gandalf but that was not the end of him, he was able to return to life. In much the same way its possible that Adar really did destroy Saurons physical form but that does not mean he was permanently killed so that statement might not have been a lie.

The battle in this episode, though entertaining can be described as a skirmish at best in which our heroes are defending just a tavern of sorts. Compare this to Helm's Deep where there were 10000 uruk hai present and the heroes were defending an entire fortress and the fate of an entire kingdom depended on it. I'm sure it's been said in the comments already, but the device Waldreg opened caused the mountain formerly known as Orodruin to explode, thus becoming Mount Doom. The device was created by Sauron to create a land of perpetual darkness caused by the active volcano. It will provide a permanent settlement for Orcs where he will build strongholds and armaments. The key to unlocking the device, the sword, was an indestructible object for good reason. I think Galadriel stood there rather dumbfounded in horror as a sort of "What have I done?" moment. I am very much enjoying this series, although I am aware some people do not. I do not wish to go into that now. However ...
There are several "plot inconsistencies", mostly minor, but one is bugging me. When the elves speak in their native languages, it is usually Quenyan. This would be fine among the Noldor, but not so much among the Sindar or silvan elves. Why? Well, back in the first age, King Thingol Greycloak of Doriath forbade the speaking of Quenyan within his kingdom, a practice that spread among all the Sindar and many of the silvan elves. (The why of this would take long to explain, so I will just say that Thingol had a pretty good reason). So, when the Noldor speak Quenyan among themselves, I'm ok with it, but among all the other elves, they should be speaking Sindarin.

Yes the volcano is Mount Doom, the only ring forged there is The One, I won't go into details because spoilers, but we will see how the others come about, patience patience hehe. We basically just saw the first steps for Mordor being set up. Also the way the volcano worked apparently was consulted with experts and is accurate, with enough water that would happen. According to Morfydd, by that point Galadriel was dissociating a little bit and feeling too defeated to react, imagine that whole victory right at the point of her fingers and then bam all of that happen, I'd be too upset as well, she has been traumatized for millenia, she needs a break and to heal.
Btw. To keep things in perspective, another channel of Tolkien experts compared the season with the movies and in terms of the movies, if we were to compare the percentage of the story we covered so far (by episode 5) the hobbits would have just found Aragorn in Bree, so if we take that into consideration A LOT of shit already happened. This is the beginning of Mordor becoming the bastion of evil we see during Lord of the Rings. They have quite a lot to cover so I'm excited so see how it pans out in episodic fashion. I never really minded the slowness of the early episodes because we never really got to see Middle Earth in 'peace time' so to speak on screen. By the time of the events of Lord of the Rings things were already sort of post apocalyptic. Mt. Doom represents the end of peace. Again.

I don't know if I would call It 'magic', but 100% Sauron uses his Maia powers to make the volcano explode so his orcs could move faster, etc. And he does that himself alone without nothing like a key, by means of his power.
Regarding the theory that Habland is Sauron, It could be posible. He could have taken his body, when he perhaps crashed into his ship while in a second made up meteorite. That could be the reason of Halbrand's shipwreck.
The thing is Halbrand is a made up character, in the books Sauron's name during the second age is Annatar, the lord of gifts. And he takes the form of a beutiful being, most likely an elf, not a man.

@@fabiobuchignani3305 Yes, when he appeared as Annatar, Lord of Gifts. Sauron put on a fair "visage" as an Elf, he befriended Celebrimbor & The other Elf Smith's of Eregion & councelled them in arts & magic and gave them the knowledge of how to forge the rings...Celebrimbor was the only Elf who trusted him. Until later when Celebrimbor figured him out.
Sauron was a shapeshifter, an Elf, a Man, a Werewolf, a Vampire & a Serpent were some of the forms he used in the Silmarillion.

But they for sure quickly found the right place :^) could have given us a quick scene showing the ships landing or the troops coming off and a small part where they get a connection to move to that village. 41:00 That kind of volcanic explosion is called a pyroclastic flow...when it's that close to you, yeah, there's no way in hell you're surviving it (think Pompeii). But for the sake of storytelling, a few of the buildings in the village were built out of stone, so they (and the people inside) probably would survive it.
While the show does have some spots that definitely don't follow the lore (especially Ep 5...there's some serious "WTF is this?!" stuff in there lore-wise with Elrond and Gil-Galad), it is using Tolkien's style of writing surprisingly well...all of Tolkien's books start off slow AF, tons of little seemingly-unconnected pieces at first, then small bits start coming together, and finally once the bigger pieces start connecting it becomes a "buckle your seatbelt Dorothy, cause Kansas is goin' bye-bye" experience. And after the ride is over with, when you look back at all the stuff that (at the time) you were wishing would just get on with it already, let's go, you realize that it's all just him laying out the threads of the story he was getting ready to tell you.

Instead, this was a phreatic eruption occurring when cold water meets magma. The phreatic explosion is less deadly, and people have survived it in real life. In recent history 2019, Whakaari / White Island eruption was a phreatic eruption. Of 47 people on the island that were less than a kilometer from a volcanic crater during the eruption, 25 survived. Many had severe burns, but they were much closer to the eruption. Hope this answers some questions. As Always enjoyed your reactions, and thanks for continuing this journey.

I'm amazed by how this show is divisive. And not divisive in a "love/hate" binary way, but there's people in aaaall ranges. I just don't understand people who say the show is completely trash. It isn't. It has some of the finest moments of visual television. The directing (specially in eps. 1, 2 and 6 - the Wayne Yip directing is good, but is below JA Bayona's and Charlotte's). The writing is okay. Nothing outstanding, because sometimes has BEAUTIFULLY written dialogue, but sometimes it's just okay. The point is: it is FAR from being this trash people are saying.
As for myself I am loving it since the 1st episode, because I embraced the mystery aspect of the show, which is VERY different from the adventurous hero's journey with all players clear that the movies have. The books in my opinion are mainly adventure, but they have more mystery than the films. The thing I've been saying is: a mystery drama revolves around questions, more than straight up conflict. So I really understand who was thrown off by the genre switch, cause when it comes to Tolkien adaptations, people are used to know what is the real quest and enemy and intentions of the characters since the beginning.
But since we are seeing the second age, when the enemy is still hidden, I think it's just fitting we have a "whodunnit", or, in better terms, a "whereissauron" instead of a clear path to follow.

You really think people are thrown off by genre or structure? It could be the best show, but if you go into expecting a drama, you'll be unable to enjoy it?

Yes Sauron was given the chance to repent and be forgiven after Morgoth’s defeat, but he refused to go to Valinor to face judgement. Above all else, remember that Sauron is “The Deceiver”. It is fully within his character to just lie outright about anything he needs to. That being said, I’m doubtful that Halbrand is Sauron. The only valid clue the show has given is his talent as a smith. But I think this is a misdirrect. I’m not convinved we have seen Sauron at all in the show yet.

I know they've condensed the timeline a bit and I hear bits and pieces about how things go down in the appendices but i think it's really cool. I'm really intrigued by Halbrand and The Stranger. As a fan of LOTR it's been so exciting to see Mount Doom coming about, seeing Elendil is lovely. Him talking to the horse in Elvish was a lovely link to Aragorn, as was Galadriel saying "noro lim" to her horse, as Arwen did when being chased by the black riders. Loving the action. Episode 6 went hard on the violence. That orc spurting his blood all over Arondir was hilariously gross 🤣. Also Galadriel can't really out run it, seems fair to her character to just take it. Plus, this has been like a huge chunk of her very long life and no one has believed her recently about evil and Sauron still being out there and it's all quite literally exploding in front of her it's probably quite a big deal.

@@ct6852 Gandalf would be very much alive, as Gandalf(or Olórin) is born before Time, offspring of the thought of Eru, before the forming of Arda.
Wether he would be in middle-Earth as of the 2nd Age? Debatable, even amongst Tolkien scholars; most tend to lean towards the version that states Gandalf only arrives in middle-Earth in his Istari form in the 3rd Age, circa the year 1000.

I am enjoying the show. I have watched the movies and that is all I know. I like the pace, there's a lot to learn. I think the stranger is a wizard, maybe those people looking for him have stripped his memory? Enjoy your reactions.

It’s really bad writing and many things don’t make sense. It’s still entertaining enough to watch but there is not one character I would shed a tear over if they died. I find Galadriel to be unlikable and broody. Elendil himself stood 7’ 11” and it makes no sense that he would have trouble fighting with one single orc and in need of rescuing. I don’t want to pick it apart but the writing is just not intelligent. I enjoy y’all’s reactions tho guys.

People liking any episode blows my mind. Easy to please, and agreeable people that don't care about Tolkien seem to like this show. Though, as a generic fantasy show, it still is below average.

For me personally, its getting more and more realistic that Halbrand is Sauron! (Even though i wasnt a Fan of the Theory at first😅)
The volcano is Mount Doom (Orodruin) cause a few hundred years later, all the Southlands and where all the Scenes are playing will be Mordor
I think, like most of the other guys in the comments, that the meteor-man is one of the wizards. Dont think its Gandalf or Saruman, but maybe Radagast or one of the Blue Wizards.
In any way, it HAS to be one of the Maias (like the Wizards,Sauron,Balrogs..) cause otherwise he wouldn’t have survived the meteor crash.
Always having such a good time watching you guys react to stuff and talk about it, cant wait for more😊
    Much Love from Austria 🇦🇹🙌🏻
