    You don't need to go to a pro boxing coach, just show a video of yourself punching on youtube, and the experts will flock to the comment section to tell you what you are doing wrong!

      lol...you are soooooo right. It is the funniest thing as many people think that they know everything that there is about boxing. I've been around the sport long enough to know that my knowledge is only a fraction of that of some of the great trainers like don turner, teddy atlas or freddie roach for example and im always willing to learn new things. I've had a few people leave me some very critical comments when I first started her on youtube and would get a little bummed and then i saw a video of Lomanchacho showing some techniques a couple years back (before he got popular) and it had a bunch of thumbs down!!!...and I thought who out there can possibly give Lomanchen thumbs down for boxing technique...like you said it was the "experts"

      Everyone is a critic nowadays. Thanks for the vids much appreciated. I box for exercise but I like to have correct form as in my younger days working out I had a lot of injuries from bad form. Again Thanks mike👍

    Must say, I have been boxing for a year but this video gave me another look for the jab. The fist, elbow and shoulder alignment is genius. I jabbed the f*** out my mates today, they did not see it coming. The barely could touch me because I kept distance jabbing

    Great video and it's very helpful to see an experienced coach diagnose little problems as they present themselves like you've shown here. And the fact that you come across as a student really open to learning, and not an "expert" trying to protect his ego, is a breath of fresh air. Let me add one take, and maybe it was mentioned in the video and I missed it, but: I never see a good reason to keep your hands quite so high as you're showing here.
    Here are 3 reasons why:
    (1) Holding your hands at such an extreme level keeps your front delts constantly working. And therefore fatiguing. You want these muscles as unfatigued as possible.
    (2) Keeping your delts contracted can slow down your reflexes as well as not allowing the "snap" your punch needs at the beginning of the movement which starts from relaxation, and slingshots into action.
    (3) You're overprotecting a less vulnerable area (top of head) at the cost of leaving too much distance to block body shots.
    If you lowered your hands to just over your chin, you have a nice home base leaving a very short distance to cover higher if you needed to, and less travel time to protect the body.
    What's the right level to hold them? Right where you can turn off your delts to hold your hands up. Once they relax, that's the right spot. You can last forever there and your most vital target (the chin) is covered.
    Also, I might add, the higher you hold your hands, the more work your core has to do when dipping your body to slip shots. The weight of your arms is higher, and like a lever, the load on your midsection is increased. That's why you'll see most of the "slipping experts" keeping their hands low.
    TLDR: keep your hands on your chin if you're choosing a high guard.

A fighter with pride will be grateful of their accomplishments but listen to constructive criticsm and make adjustments.       To generate a powerful jabe u need to step and snap your shoulder but to do it you need to learn how to relax your muscles u can't be explosive if you're stiff

    not a "bad" habit. its like people look expect u to be perfect. its just not the most efficient or effective but im sure u can knock someone out still with that. or its a good way to put ur hands down to have more movement.

    Am I the only one that ocasionally watches such videos and feels real sadistic pleasure. Each time he lowers that back hand my muscle reflexes kick in and I flinch for a left hook while laughing :D I should really see a specialist ...

    What timing! been boxing for 10 years and the last 2 years been training on my own and developed shoulder pains. After some physical therapy it seemed to go away but as soon as I started training the pain would come back. So I hired a boxing coach to start from ground zero and found some flaws in my punches. One thing was that I would lean my head forward with my jab, but the main thing was that my foot work was a bit off and just minor adjustments to my footwork helped tremendously.
    Also may I suggest relaxing a bit, I know you said you are still in the processes of improvement but the only thing I can see from the video is that you are too tense. Try making only a fist at the last second of impact and have your hand open the rest of the time. I like to keep my fist slightly open and have my thumb rubbing my temple area. (in fighter stance)

      You're absolutely right about the need to relax a bit and about making a fist at the last second. I always find that I'm pretty tense when I'm thinking too much about what I'm doing...hopefully ill loosen up a bit as I get used to it. I'm glad that you were able to get your shoulder pain sorted out because it gives us the chance to stay in great shape doing something that is not just effective but fun.     mike is the master of staying still in a motion video. :) thanks again man. started for the first time in my 40's (simultaneously losing weight and boxing and boxing related exercises) about a month ago -- with your beginner bag video -- and i'm finding i wish i woulda started two decades ago...lots of fun, so much to learn, far more of a mental sport than i had imagined..

    Curious, whenever I go to a boxing/MMA gym, I'm ALWAYS barked at for not "fully extending" my jabs and crosses. But I see a slight bend a lot of the time even from pro fighters. I get they probably just want to instill the habit in me, but it doesn't seem to be the end all be all to the jab. Sometimes, your target may be just a little too close for full extension and you don't realize it UNTIL you throw the jab, then from there, you make adjustments. But you don't truly know until you actually throw it. Here, a lot of your jabs don't fully extend but the coach doesn't seem to care that much. Am I on the right track or do I just need to shut up and go back to practicing my full extension? lol

    Great channel mate. Im kickboxing 3 times a week. I want to add some 2 weight sessions into my weekly training. But dont have the the time to hit the gym as well. Can you give me a decent press up and upper back routine with bands which I could do inbetween my kickboxing sessions? Cheers

    you were stepping in with the jab from long to midrange..The jab is not extended fully.Do we think we should step in with the jab even if we are in range?

      That will always depend on your style of boxing. If you’re a tall fighter with a long reach then you may not to step closer to your shorter opponent. I’m a shorter guy who usually spars much taller opponents to I usually take that step in. Thanks for taking the time to watch 😎😎😎

    Check out this dude Kelly starret. I believe he has a phd in physical therapy (I could be wrong).
    I get the feeling that your shoulder injury has been a ticking time bomb. Seems like your shoulders are forced into a rounded position as a means to exaggerate your defensive posture. (High, mike Tyson like guard).
    I feel that if you looked into Kelly starret and understood some principles surrounding "thoracic spine mobility" your pecs will open up and allow for a smoother glide in the execution of mid range motions (punching, like bench pressing is considered mid range movement).
    The idea of your "compensation" is just that. Rounded shoulders will eventually lead to a shoulder issues (there is a way to "pack" your back muscles without being rounded)
    I also think this is what made mike Tyson so great. His motion is technical mastery of not just boxing, but the favored biomechanics of the body period.

    Do you turn your hip and toe when throwing a jab, I am new to boxing,

      Not particularly. The jab is a quick punch. It requires a slight rotation of the hip yet you don’t want to over commit and put too much into it by completely rotating you hip or foot. I thank you fior watching 😎🙂🙂🙂

    Need help please? I’m a pressure fighter.. but sometimes I overrotate my jab.. and coz’ of that i kinda have a hard time dealing with southpaws, slipping to the left, setting up my right, etc... I mean I just put my self in a situation where its hard for me to really move? Is it my stance? Do I overrotate my shoulders too much? Is my front foot too angled? Please I need your opinion? Whats the best jab technique for a pressure fighter like me?

      Thanks for commenting. I’ve been really wanting to make a southpaw video. Boxing south paws can be really tough. One of the first south paws I ever sparred was light heavy weight champ Adonis Stevenson. Wow that guy hits hard. I learned very quickly that jabbing a southpaw is very different than using the jab against an orthodox fighter. Like you , I found myself off balance and eating his left hand.
      If you’re a pressure fighter, you will want to really use your footwork to get and stay close to your opponent. Try and stay to the outside of his jab as you circle to your left.
      Once you are in close, fighting a southpaw is not as tricky... it’s getting in close without being tagged by their power left hand that’s hard.
      Without seeing exactly how you box it’s tough to give advice.
      I still know a few world caliber southpaw and I’m going to try and bug them to do a video.

I applied the short jab in this video to my craft and it opened up a new window for me.. It made me set up my Right uppercut And other punches. Like you said I need to use my footwork to get in close. Again Thankyou!

      It definitely can as you really get a chance to use the muscles involved In punching with a near maximal amount of force 😎

      My first amateur fight was like 20 years ago ( lol seriously I’m going to be 43). But I tore my shoulder and developed some bad habits after I healed and I’m lucky enough to know some great coaches that will help me correct them. Thanks for commenting 🙂🙂

      Not at all...you can just look at Deontay Wilder who started boxing later than you and he has a Heavyweight Belt. Not just in boxing but in life, there's going to be a ton of people that will list all of the reasons why you can do something...you're too small, too old.. whatever.. as long as you believe in yourself and put in the necessary work... you can really do almost anything :)

      You can try to really put your hip into the shot or you can work on really pushing off of that rear foot to propel yourself forward and put more momentum into your jab ... but the key to a really great jab is timing 😎😎

      Yesterday I shot a 10 round pro sparring video with a fighter in training camp for an NABO title. It will be a video about how to spar like a pressure fighter but he asked me not to post it until after his fight in a few weeks.

      Wow.... I wish I had your height.🙂🙂the jab is usually a great weapon for taller fighters as you can really keep your opponents at bay and then crack them with a big right hand when they try to close the distance on you.
      I usually want to get close because I’m often the shorter guy at 1.81m. With your height you can use your jab to keep shorter pests like me at a distance 🙂🙂
