That was one brutal crash! Hope you are all right. Pretty cool vlog, it reminded me of the early 2000s when I was riding trials with a shimano hub, I too had to find the engagement point before kicking. That freecoaster seems far worse though, 3 EPs? Crazy
I remember, years ago struggling to learn Trials moves with regular 16 point Shimano hubs, and how much better I automatically got by just switching to a Chris King hub. The added control was like Night and Day. I'm sure the freecoaster is great for flatland, but Wow I can really see You pedaling back and fourth a quarter turn to do a simple back wheel hop.
Top stuff as always Ali! Good thing youve always got ya skidlid on! If this hub became standard, it seems the new possibilities could be really interesting.
Ali tell me you secrets, how to you find the sun in Glasgow haha, i go out every day on the most part and its always chucking it down. Anyway great video as always, keep up the great work man.
Ali that is amazing! And people thought they had it rough trying to learn trials on a sixteen engagement hub, three engagements is madness once again proving you can do trials on anything if you work with what you have, mad Ali C skills help too undoubtedly! And oh man I've been sitting here trying to think of some sort of badass dream freecoaster trick and that's a really hard question! I think the most epic freecoaster trick I ever saw was a fakie to front flip to fakie over a mini resi ramp. Maybe go simple like fakie with no hands or the crazier side some sort of fakie G turn on the rear wheel.
Sweet vlog Ali! I've tried free coasters before on a bmx and really didn't like it, i feel its more fun to pedal backwards haha! And i totally understand the engagement points problem, dealing with it right now on my current dj hub lol. But im interested in seeing you try out new tricks or lines, cheers!
Great episode Ali! Cool to see what a forecoaster is like on the trials bike. I've got a couple friends that have sponsorships with i9 for mountain bike, but really cool to see them on a trials bike! Think there are any plans in the works to develop a forecoaster hub with more engagements specifically for trials? Anway, great stuff as always!
Hey Ali Clarkson! Is the term for a reverse manual= Ranual? Or backwards manual= Banual? Back Manny? Hey please show a reverse manual shot with pedestrians and cyclists in the background but run the footage in reverse. Then you would be manualling in a reverse universe! Who knew trails riding could be so mind bending!?!?! Ride ride ride!
Hey ali, great vblog!! I’m excited to see more freecoaster hubs on mtb, especially when it used in trials. It reminds me when i started trials using a 16 engagement hub to start off learning, guess thats almost similar to the engagement to the freecoaster. Anyway, most of the freecoaster hubs in bmx we’re able to adjust the amount of slag from like 15 degree, 45degree, 90 degree and some even went to 180 degree. Maybe u can check that out see if the hub is able to adjust the slag
Holy Moly that helmet crack sound @9:00 was brutal! :O I hope you get helmets replaced regularly after stuff like that. I cant imagine hitting crushed foam after it's done it's job... Or is this helmet design meant to take more than 1 major hit? Thanks so much for your inspirational videos! Let your fans know if you need new helmets cause we like what's inside it! Maybe an amazon shopping wish list?
Interesting experiment and I like your expeditions :).. But 3 point engagement point is definitely weak point, especially in trial stuff. As you said this is quite bicycle ever though . Also I want to see reverse longest Renual(?!) while others are doing manual soon ;)
BIG like for effort Ali :) I'ts kind a weird that hub... Why they didn't simply made regular hub with a some kind of free wheel so you can drive backwards without pedal rotation, and go forwards with instant engagement on pedal...
This hub really shows your insane skill level! Why did your body position get so high in those backwards manuals, though? It should be way easier if you go lower like in your forwards manuals, shouldn't it?
you cant rely on pedal pressure to hold the front end up .you have to us the lean backwards and balance it ,doing a manny with the front end low is a bitch to balance and it looks sloppy because you end up fighting your bike more.
I have done chainless backwards manuals before and you can do it in a normal manualling position. Manuals are generally easier to balance if you keep your arse low and Ali does that in his normal manuals - that's why I asked :) My guess is that he did it because he is used to that higher position from using pedal pressure in normal backwards manuals, which this position would be kind of normal for.
All of this is new to me. What a great channel ... and that’s the coolest bike I’ve ever seen. Forgive my ignorance, but what size rims are those? Great video. Great work.
Hey Ali your videos are great but i have a question. What is the difference of your bake levers on the opposite side? Is there any pros of having the front brake on the right and back on the left. You should do a video on that. Thanks
The old try all freewheels made me get used to no engagement. Superb out of the box, but after two months is was a freecoaster. Ahhh French engineering.. So versatile!
Nice try, Ali! Long time ago I thought about mixing front freewheel system and freecoaster. Idea was to keep chain tight enough to suppress cog backwards movement, while freewheel allows to spin cranks freely, thus have solid engagement. But weight and 14x110 hub dimensions killed my plans to try it
As I remember, my friend's bmx had overtightened chain to prevent cranks backwards rotation on tailwhips. In theory, front freewheel should override such cog movement. Of course after fakie tricks there will be usual coaster's gap for engaging, but after preloading pedals, freewheel will take its place. Also this envolves clutch-construction coaster, where cog screwing in, while pushing pedals forward
Awesome! That looks so much fun, i want one!! Also, do you know anything about the new Santa Cruz trials bike? I've seen a picture of a suspiciously Carbon looking fork and possibly frame, any news you can share?
Bloody scared me this one!! Not for me the free coaster in trials. Question please. How do I tightened my headset on my inspired with no star nut? Cheers Ali!
It always pleases me to see you being polite in return to the security guard folks. Compassion and respect help pave the way for greater acceptance of cyclists at large.
Ironic since I just spent 3 hours at a skate park (first time ever) with my just built 26" dj/trials bike. There were a few guys riding bmx w/ freecoaster's and we swapped bikes (also my first time ever on a bmx). Learned a few things right off: 1) my feet are way to big to ride any bmx bike with pegs, 2) it's way cool to be able to test run those crazy steep skate ramps and then coast backwards, 3) the freecoaster seemed pretty useless for any low speed move where you have to kick start.
I remember when freecoasters started to be used by street riders. Freecoasters where design for riding Flatland. For trials I would rather have a conventional hub. For bmx freecoaster all the way, the silence is wonderful. Miss the silence when riding trials.
I would like to get into trials but i cant find any bikes in australia and im wondering if you have any good quality but cheap trails bikes that could he shipped to aus
Isn’t really weird to haven pedaled backwards for years now and suddenly not needing to anymore? I’d imagine that i would pedal backwards regardless out of reflex/habit if I were to ride a freecoster right now :D Great video though, really different,
Hope you're okay, that was one nasty looking crash. Fortunately you are a smart person and you use a helmet, that could have been bad with a bare head...
when i switched to a freecoaster on my bmx bike, i hated it for a while. now i cant go back. you just have to relearn everything youve ever done that involves pedal pressure and dont use pedal pressure.
You my friend....... are a boss at trials riding ......
don't ever stop inspiring other's to do what most would call..... Impossible....
lol.. good luck using a free coaster in trials mate.. that shit would scare the life out of me..
That backwards manual was something else!!
Your Vlogs are getting better and better. I really enjoy watching them.
Hey Ali. Take a break you've earned it. Time for a nice warm soak and some ice where needed.
Those are some amazing tricks you have.
that nice guard put a smile on my face
It's good to see a good man and listen to such soft happy background music ;]
Finally something that gives you a good challenge. haha
Love the ending btw. The music, the security guard, just good vibes. Take care, Ali!
I could never deal with that pedal technique of the freecoaster. Good Job!👍
That was one brutal crash! Hope you are all right. Pretty cool vlog, it reminded me of the early 2000s when I was riding trials with a shimano hub, I too had to find the engagement point before kicking. That freecoaster seems far worse though, 3 EPs? Crazy
I am so glad you had your helmet on! That could have been one dead Ali Clarkson otherwise. Take care man.
It's been a little bit since I've gotten enough time to tune in, you're really stepping it up man. Really a natural with the videos!
Top stuff as always Ali! Good thing youve always got ya skidlid on!
If this hub became standard, it seems the new possibilities could be really interesting.
Amazing Ali!!!!! Always trying new things even when it hurts!!!!
Ali tell me you secrets, how to you find the sun in Glasgow haha, i go out every day on the most part and its always chucking it down. Anyway great video as always, keep up the great work man.
haha, well i need to start doing that more often then.
fakie manual looks so sick on a mountain bike. Awesome stuff Ali!
Ali that is amazing! And people thought they had it rough trying to learn trials on a sixteen engagement hub, three engagements is madness once again proving you can do trials on anything if you work with what you have, mad Ali C skills help too undoubtedly! Real cool...Nice to try different stuff out....puts a new spin on things....B-watchin...
The 270 endo into backwards manual looks AMAZING!
I need this in my life haha ! Great stuff Ali

Think there are any plans in the works to develop a forecoaster hub with more engagements specifically for trials? Anway, great stuff as always!
Ali Clarkson right! I hadn’t thought of that! Hope the head is ok after that big slam!
Those fakie manuals without the pedalling looked really smooth! but that fall at 9:00 also looked really sore!
Eric M Amazing idea!
I think the BMX term is fakie Manual
Reverse the footage when doing maney back - genius idea! Want to see it too!
Its backwards manual
Eric M the backwards manual is called a backlash in bmx idk about trials or mtb
Well done Ali doing that on a free coaster thats impressive. Keep up the good vlogs

Great riding , freecoaster trials must be so hard . I used to have a freecoaster on my bmx and can’t imagine doing anything that needs a pedal kick
The first location is amazing for street trials especially when you catch a Duncan shaw riding around there still wont forget the day I met him there
Interesting experiment and I like your expeditions :).. But 3 point engagement point is definitely weak point, especially in trial stuff. As you said this is quite bicycle ever though . Also I want to see reverse longest Renual(?!) while others are doing manual soon ;)
That looked really hard work well done mate
very impressive Ali. Couldn't believe that you made all these trialsy moves with a freecoaster :)
and 9:01 looked really painful
hope you will recover well
And that's why you wear a helmet, ouch...
I love the music, great choice for your videos!
BIG like for effort Ali :) I'ts kind a weird that hub... Why they didn't simply made regular hub with a some kind of free wheel so you can drive backwards without pedal rotation, and go forwards with instant engagement on pedal...

Dude your brave! Good vlog!! 👍
Looks tricky Ali. Pretty cool idea to try out new moves though.
Very interesting content thanks Ali

Shit! You're actually already insanely good on the freecoaster!
9:00 I spat out my coffee! Looked painful hope you're all good!
Beautiful! Keep it up.
Bloody scared me this one!! Not for me the free coaster in trials.
Question please. How do I tightened my headset on my inspired with no star nut? Cheers Ali!
What do you normally use a freewheel (white industries eno?) or a free cassette for your rear hub?
I was literally thinking when do you guys get kicked out of places and BAM
i was just thinking "what if i put my freecoaster on a trials bike". thanks for answering that question!
It always pleases me to see you being polite in return to the security guard folks. Compassion and respect help pave the way for greater acceptance of cyclists at large.
Might as well go chainless... Now there's an idea for a video. Awesome stuff as usual btw!
can you not move the chain around on the hub so that the cranks are at more suitable positions on the engagement points? Love the idea tho!
loved it.
Nice 1 Ali makes me want one but no noise rolling I'd think something's wrong
What bike were you riding in this video. Love the colour.
I like your riding style !!!
1년전 영상을 이제 보네요~ㅎㅎ
조심히 타게요 머리충격이 클듯하네요~^^항상조심요 영상보고 많이 배우고 있네요~ㅎㅎ
Thumbs up for the nicest security guard ever! =D
7:59 thats some really nice editing
Have you thought about trying a profile zcoaster??
Would like it when you try the Profile z Coaster because it is a Freecoaster and a Cassette hub at the same time.
Hey Ali, can you say something about the Czar Ion 24?
haha the bike has no drag but the rear brake is catching quite a bit!! please sort it its ruining my OCD!
Ironic since I just spent 3 hours at a skate park (first time ever) with my just built 26" dj/trials bike. Waiting for this video for a few days now :)
Nice ! How much engagements do you have on the hubs ? I think the profile Zcoaster is perfect because he have 48 engagements !
What's the rear hub spacing on that? BMX/110? Track/120? Road/130? Old School MTB/135? That's not 142/12 Thru Axle, is it?
damn perfect example to wear a helmet!! I used to be a BMX street rider years ago.. I've had my crashes too lol
I remember when freecoasters started to be used by street riders. Freecoasters where design for riding Flatland. For trials I would rather have a conventional hub. For bmx freecoaster all the way, the silence is wonderful. Miss the silence when riding trials.
Nice one lad. Good luck :-)
I would like to get into trials but i cant find any bikes in australia and im wondering if you have any good quality but cheap trails bikes that could he shipped to aus
Nice een mate, takes a bit ae gittin used tae then....
Looking forward to the next vids...
Keep the rubber side down....
Ha ha ha.... Can't wait for the next video.....
But rest up for a little while and be nice and fresh and sore free for the next ride . . . . .
9:01 and that is why we wear helmets kids. Even the pros fall and hit their head sometimes.
this is very cool ali :D
9:00 holy. that scared the shit outa me. i thought you broke your back or something :O
What Handel bars are you using I like the way they look.
8:03 - 8:13 that was sweet!
Freecoasters freak me out. I don't think I would like that half or quarter crank that has no engagement. I think I'll stick with my cassette.
How did you get on with this in the end? Shame you can't adjust the take up
9:00 That helmet saved your head
hey ali, do you sell that "rent this space" sticker?
Thay chood make one with a on off brake on handle bar s so you can pull it to go backwards compatibility back to normal wen you let go
Isn’t really weird to haven pedaled backwards for years now and suddenly not needing to anymore? I’d imagine that i would pedal backwards regardless out of reflex/habit if I were to ride a freecoster right now :D
Great video though, really different,
Vacras not really you get use to it
Luis Uribe I’ve never ridden a free coaster so I can’t judge it :P
9:00 looked absolutely horrible!!! That looks like it hurt a lot 😖 hope nothing too bad came from it
Ali Clarkson that’s good to hear :D
Hey I think your cone nuts might be too tight or something your back wheel seems to barely move at all
Hey Ali, where can I get a bike like yours here in the United states?
Hope you're okay, that was one nasty looking crash. Fortunately you are a smart person and you use a helmet, that could have been bad with a bare head...
Did i9 ever release these hubs for retail?
Which set up do you like better?
5:10 brake rub or hub resistance?
Ali I take slams like that to lol I do the same thing and lay there lol awesome video 😎 take it easy lol
when i switched to a freecoaster on my bmx bike, i hated it for a while. now i cant go back. you just have to relearn everything youve ever done that involves pedal pressure and dont use pedal pressure.
id love to see trials on a fixed hub
Did u rebuild the wheel yourself?
I'm 26 year old, can I be good at street trials if I start riding now?
