  • Backpacking on of my favorite trails in the Sierra Nevada mountains: Kearsarge Pass. The trail begins in Onion Valley and climbs steadily for approximately 4.8 miles to Kearsarge Pass. Enjoy!

    Great video. Thanks for taking me along.
    Getting out in the great outdoors allows us to reset our perspective. Detoxifies us from this crazy “civilized “ world.

    Great video! I have done this trip twice, continuing on to Forrester Pass, Shepherds Pass & down to Symes Creek Trailhead above Independence. Our packs were heavy 50-70 lbs. as we stayed out for a week and ate and drank very well! Lol! Thanks again for sharing!

    Surprised there isn't more snow for June. But I've been up there in July where the snow was mostly up on north facing high slopes. Always beautiful though no matter what time of year.

    I was going to resist asking but couldn't help myself... why didn't you go for the Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 tent? For not a lot of money you would have a much hiker friendly tent in that instead of having back in or crawl out of the tent, you could just roll out of it : ) and I think you'd have a little more room to boot. Thanks for a nice view of the mountains!!! Miss them..... : (

      Good question! Wanted something extremely light when moving to the Big Agnes line up. 2 weeks ago we upgraded to the Big Agnes Tiger Wall 3 and love it - much more spacious, 2 doors and still very light for a 3-person. Video to come!

    How’s the tree cover outside the closed section around bullfrog lake or kiersarge lakes? Doing hst to nobo JMT in September and will resupply in Indy. This time I’m using my hammock instead of ground tarp. I’ve never been over kiersarge pass just curious about trees to hang.

    Btw did you need a permit to camp at the lake?

    • @Sheety33
      @Sheety33  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Snow free as of two weeks ago all the way up until reaching the pass. A permit was needed for camping at the lake.

    • @wannabetowasabe
      @wannabetowasabe 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A permit is needed for any traveling for overnight purposes in the Sierra Nevada. There is a daily quota of the number of permits issued at each trailhead. Most permits can be reserved and then a portion is set aside for same day permit issuance. When the quota is reached no more permits are issued. Those numbers are based on a formula that incorporates the biological and social impacts of the number of people occupying the wilderness. It is also based on the observations of experienced wilderness rangers and their supervisors. Other management methods such as lakes closed to overnight use, stay limits in certain locations or areas, camping only allowed 100 feet or more from water, party size restrictions, almost always 15 people traveling together and fire restrictions based on amount of fuel produced in various zones, among others, are used to manage human impacts. These are included in the wilderness permit, which forms a type of contract the visitor agrees to and signs.
      The wilderness of the central Sierra Nevada is the largest collection of contiguous congressionally designated wilderness in the lower 48 states. The multiple national parks and multiple national forests that manage this area do so in close cooperation. They have an annual meeting that lasts about 4 days, where issues are worked on and management coordinated. I'm retired from the U.S. Forest Service and it was very rewarding to take part in this group for many years. The group was made up of dedicated, intelligent and experienced people, as well as scientists, who have a passion for maintaining wilderness for the nation.

      @@layers442 I forgot to mention, but due to an overwhelming demand for hiking to the top of Mt. Whitney, permits are required for both day and overnight use on that trail. A permit for day hiking is somewhat unusual, but in this case proved to be necessary.

    What was the yellow stuff you put in the coffee? I wonder if any boulders came down across the trail during the quake in Lone Pine a couple of days ago? I know in the Whitney Portal some very large boulders came down into the campground, parking lot and portions of the trail.

    • @Sheety33
      @Sheety33  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Laird Superfood turmeric - great addition to coffee. Good question! How big was the quake?

    • @rkatrails
      @rkatrails 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Sheety33 Quake was 5.8. Happened about 10:30 am or so. Whenever I hike the Sierra and particular areas of the trail, when you look around, are so susceptible to huge boulders coming down in a quake or big land slides. Like when you're standing on Kearsarge Pass, if you look at the mountain directly behind you rather than the lakes down below, if there's a big quake it will come down on top of you. www.google.com/amp/s/www.foxnews.com/us/earthquake-california-whitney-portal-landslide-boulder-camping-area-rockslide-epicenter.amp www.google.com/amp/s/www.foxnews.com/us/earthquake-california-whitney-portal-landslide-boulder-camping-area-rockslide-epicenter.amp

    ARRRRGH! You used that terrible expression "the wife." I don't know why you did. This expression sounds like "I brought THE smaller tent" or "THE car didn't start." How about, "my lovely wife is on this trip too." She might have been a little less camera shy this time, but she was also wearing a mask! Sorry to criticize, but "THE wife" has bothered me since high school and that was more than 50 years ago!

      Oh and I forgot to say what a good video this was to watch. Kearsarge Pass is one I was not able to hike in all my years living in the eastern Sierra. Now the knees are shot, I had a severe fracture to one lower leg, a broken hip (road bicycle accident), a burst fracture to a lumbar vertebrae and without doing any work on it have become older. I'm still backpacking though, vicariously by watching some very good channels of people like you! Thank you.
