You make it so simple to understand and you keep all your gear affordable so anyone can go out and enjoy the outdoors . This is why I like your channel !
YES ! I have several in my fire kit (and in my med kit). You're the first person I've read who's mentioned those. I also carry "fireballs" (cotton balls covered in Vaseline) in plastic pill bottles in my fire kit. BTW bandages and dressings also serve as Tinder. And I always carry a lighter and small ferro rod on my person in case I'm separated from my kit
great vid, thanks for sticking to the points and including an appropriate amount of redundancy (for my walnut sized brain, anyway). it's especially refreshing that you take the utilitarian perspective ("this is supposed to be fun"). i know some folks like to suffer for the delayed rush it gives them, but i have aged out of that nonsense. the magnifying lens is the coolest tip - as you said, no impact on precious resources in the kit. i look forward to checking out more of your videos.
Great teaching video Blackie... you have a gift for passing on your knowledge.... this and other videos like it will become required watching for my grandkids who I am trying to teach my old hillbilly ways. So much of this stuff was common knowledge when I was a kid. It was how we lived in the hills of KY and VA. Now it is quickly becoming all but lost.
love these basic bushcraft videos blackie, these are great for everyone from either learning and or just refreshing. I've said this before but man your videos and your style of teaching is very much appreciated. you make it very easy to understand. hope all is well your way
Black i.e. - good job relating the importance of enjoying the outdoors! All these skills will help in an emergency - yes! But the bottom line is to use skills to enjoy the great outdoors! Keep up the great videos!!!
Fine video Sir. Folks, Ol Blackie has never failed to respond to a question from me, and has always been able to help me find the right answer. Great guy to learn from. Personally I'm happy to have found his channel.
Thank you for another great video. My fire kits are very similar to yours, but I do need to add some char. I carry my main kit usually in a haver type bag, but also have one in my backpack and a small one in my fishing gear. One thing I've added in each one, though is a small folding knife. I do like redundancy.
Hi Blackie: Your name was passed on to me by Black Hat Bush craft. Just watched a couple of videos and enjoyed the way you explained the way you do bush craft. I hit the subscribe and bell buttons, now to go back and check out past videos.
great video blackie practice everything till you get it second nature to do it lots of ppl don't understand this concept and I always carry dry tinder it was raining here for 3 weeks stuff is still soaked well atb ....Tom
I carry kerosene (tiki torch fuel) in a little bottle, vaseline cotton balls, and then i don't need a flame producing fire starter. i still carry both a lighter and matches, but those fuels really are great. I go overkill with fire in all honesty but i never have to worry about fire because I'm in the desert haha
i bought a 1/2"x6" ferro rod blank , drilled a piece of fatwood and epoxied the rod in it . tinder and ferro rod in one package . those oval tinder tins are cool , where do you get them ? Blackie , you have 5 , lighter, ferro rod ,matches , flint and steel , mag lens . Clipper butane lighters are great . refillable and the flint can be replaced great stuff Blackie , thanks for the share .
Hi Blackie, thanks for this and all the previous very interesting videos. Can you please explain in depth how you prepare the "charcloth". Greeting from Oz.
I'm a smoker in Canada and I can attest that there are no conditions under which a Bic lighter will not ignite. Also, carry pine or spruce gum if you can get it. You can burn the world down with one small piece.
Hello Blackie, good video but I was wondering if there was a reason for leaving out a magnesium fire starter from your suggested items. Please keep the videos coming I enjoy each and every one.
Blackie,I see your carrying a condor bushlore?? Does it bug you that you can't carry a ferro rod in the sheath??Or is that not a priority for you as you can just use the one from your fire kit.Thx's and great vid.
+Down Range!! i have never been a fan of the ferro rod on the sheath bit..i see it as a easy access..but to easy to get lost or beat up..i want the rod kept dry and clean..so i carry in my haversack..or on my rucksack..thanks for the comment..safe journeys
+James Hildebrand they can be of use..but to be honest..i find them a poor fire rod and a lot of work to shave down a pile of shavings..if i use fat wood i can make good shavings and they ignite with a spark same as the bar..but the bar shavings burn very rapidly..the best i can tell you is get one and see if it fits your style..safe journeys
Could you tell me what brand ferrocerium rods you show using -- the blanks that you added paracord to? I've sent away twice and don't think they are really dpendable/good ones.
+liken223 to be honest..i found my blank on a search on ebay..i have long forgotten who i got it from..sorry wish i could be of more help..safe journeys

A few alcohol prep pads added to a kit will produce a flame from a spark, and they are individually packed in a waterproof envelopes.

I can't seem to get my fill of fire kits. Great video, Blackie!
thanks safe journeys to you
A 9 volt battery and steel wool is a quick and easy way for beginners to get a fire for sure. Steel wool lights up super easy with a ferro rod also.
