I was going to where he picked up so much. I was fair at keeping an eye on someone but he would loose you in under 10 minutes. He told no one where his harvest spots were. Never. I wasn't going to hunt his spots but he was up there in age. Ornery old cuss out lived two different doctors that told everyone he was not long for this world. If I remember right he lived on to 94.
I had a grandmother who was born in 1900. She outlived a few doctors, and left us within a year or two of you great uncle. All that , and 7 children along the way.

Your techniques are precisely what we were taught in the military. Move slowly a few paces, look where you want to go, and move slowly & deliberately towards that spot, pausing to look and listen 360°. Properly known as the "leapfrog" or "overwatch" depending on the size of your party. We were also taught that when "looking", to avoid turning your head, but move your Eyes - in a vertical zip zag pattern "W" or like the infinity ♾️ sign. Turn at the waist to expand field of vision, and scan with the eyes. Something with the cones and retina make it easier to detect movement scanning in one of those patterns. I saw you flush something, and based on the height. I guessed a deer... GREAT VIDEO ! You'd have made one hellova military instructor ! PS thanks for putting up with the heat & humidity for us !
These videos are very helpful. Been using these tips these past few weeks while deer hunting. Stalks have been much more successful, even got 30 yards to a legal buck. Thank you for these valuable tips.
That zig-zag entry at the beginning of the video slows trackers down by not leaving (shine) and not leaving an obvious direction of travel. Adding side-stepping to that can really confuse some trackers. A good place to drop a little cayenne pepper to throw off K9's as well. Great video thanks.
often i will walk backwards in or do a zig zag at the entry to misdirect if a trail is close i will walk toward the side step to let them think i went on the trail

More of a fisherman than a hunter myself, but have begun to dabble. Went on a bunny hunt with my .22 last year. I noticed that when I flipped the switch in my mind to looking for something that doesnt want me to see it, I started moving much slower. Taking few steps and many pauses to look around. I saw more rabbits that day than I have across many other non-hunting excursions combined. Definitely have work to do, but glad that my instinct seems to align with technique. This probably varies from person to person. I wonder how many people no longer have any connection to the skills that have allowed us make it this far.

Been subscribed to this channel for a while now but just now doing deep dives on content. This "being sneaky" series reminds me a lot of how my grandpa and my dad moved about when hunting. Being a boy and being impatient, I didn't understand why they moved like this, but as you get older it comes to you. What an amazing channel, learning a lot and being reminded of things my grandpa and dad taught me growing up.
Your vertical layers remind me of a snow camo lesson. US army used to use "over whites" for winter ops .....white pants ...white parka. From a lower perspective and against a wooded back drop that stands out HUGE. Always go with a broken pattern top ....with dark shadow of tree patches ..... because you have to consider what you will be viewed against.
We played hide and seek all the time in my neighborhood, I played with kids who were all at least 2 years and some were 4 years older than me, so I got caught first every time until I figured out some of the things you do. Once when I was about 9 {1958} I believe it probably saved me from a predator. I was playing in an open area next to a railroad track and it was a few hundred yards through a wooded area to the houses. I saw a man walking down the tracks but that was not unusual , but I sneakily watched him with my head down as he went by and I could see he was paying attention to me more than normal. He went past and I forgot about him for a minute or two and then I looked up and he was no longer on the tracks. I could run pretty fast , but I knew if hge was after me ,he would catch me before I got thru the woods if I ran , so I angled off to one of my hiding spots in the brush, It was a bunch of briers and thorns that rabbits had been hiding in for years. I was a small kid and I had shimmied in and out of there enough , I could get in and get about half way 20 feet or so, and you could not see me . I had learned the trick I am going to share by playing that hide and seek game , and someone found me in a similar spot , because they could see the whites of my eyes way back in there. So I lay there and controlled my breathing, and figured if he was after me ,he would just walk past, but he didn't , I was squnting my eyes so I could just see out and I could see his head at the entrance to this tiny rabbit hole opening . He was hunting me! He must have been so close , he saw me go in , but he couldn't hear me or see me and he couldn't get in there without getting all torn up and snagged and he must have figured I had crawled out the other side and was gone. He stayed there for what seemed like forever , waiting to see or hear something, then he finally left. I waited the rest of the day in the spot , thinking he was probably only 20 feet away , waiting for me to come out. Finally my mom and a couple of my friends came looking for me , and when they got close I came out . The woods can be terrifying to some people , but they were always my friend. I learned how to be almost as stealthy as a deer or rabbit in them. You said it yourself, you picked that yearling out of great camoflage because you saw it's eye! Squint like Clint , when you want to hide!
much more 'predators' in the urban environment. I walk to a liquor store in a sketchy area at night and it's always an adventure. Being aware is most important. I just started watching this guy and love it. I was a boy scout and a lot of this I have lost in my memory but they are coming back.You are bringing back my scouting days.
Well. a great vid! Not quite what I expected, but totally useful. So now my deer story. I unexpectedly found myself in a small in a small herd of deer. I wasn't hunting, just out foraging and scouting. Next thing I know, I'm right smack in the middle of a small deer herd. I could actually reach out and touch one. About then, the herd realized I wasn't a deer and bolted. How did I pull this off? Not that it was my intention, but a few tips: First, is to make a little sound as possible. Second is observe where your next step is. Easy in the day harder in the dark. But where you put each step makes a difference. Foot ware... Shoes. What are you wearing? Or in my case not wearing? The natural human pace is toes first heels last. So pay attention to where you put your toes. That means looking at where you are knowing exactly where each foot is going.
I found this channel while looking up cap and ball and found so much more useful stuff. I'm going to use the stuff in this video for squatching. Great channel!

I was out mushroom hunting back in the mid 80s and on wooded hillside carefully observing the ground below me, as I looked up there was a deer maybe 2 feet from me, she didn't hear me or see me until we were almost facing each other. We startled each other to say the least.

One time I brought a bag of cornnuts with me for lunch 😂, that was a mistake. While I was crunching on the cornnuts a heard of elk came right up to my location from behind and I never heard them because of what I was eating! Last time I took that for lunch 😂
Blackie I hunted both cotton tail and swamp bunnies all my youth and never ran across a bunny that big. I think I I would have run across one that big I would have run faster that the bunny but in the opposite direction. LOL
Hey Mister, how often generally, does one encounter snakes down south? Im from Michigan, its a non issue, but my grandsons are growin up in Va and soon moving to Ky. They are 5 and 6. I will be visiting more and doing more with them outdoors. Whats most important regarding snakes in the hotter thicker environment?
If it had been a cryptid, it would have launched at your neck. But seriously, that deer had legs far too long to be a rabbit and was too quiet to be a dog.
Also if you look, plants are in layers, you have a low layer, a medium low layer, a medium, a medium high, and a high. Need to build your blind in layers
I feel like I am going to walk outside and see someone in a hat doing a dipsy-doodle in my yard and have to say hey there neighbor did you need help finding your way home.
I'm not so sure, and I disagree. As a "hunter," it is inarguably 1000x easier to spot something moving horizontally across your line of sight. You open lanes of light where there was none, AND you make "dark" (ie: block) lines of sight that were bright. And by raising your waving your white flag (hand) in the air??? I spot movement long before I know what it is. That was a semi tame city deer. I've snuck up to within 20 feet of a Wild deer I had NO IDEA was there! Could have gotten closer if I knew it was there.
I'm got some coveralls made up that match the waines coating and pale blue paint above it from a picture of the wall that the vault door of the tiny 2 person bank that is located in a small corner of our local grocery store digitally printed on the entire front of coveralls and on front of ski mask and back of pair of gloves opposite sides are printed to match inside of vault from a picture of what it looks like from Mana,gers desk when you look that direction from that exact spot any typical work day. We also had cardboard cut outs made in 3 different positions of the detail gang at work and have been setting them in various places and poses every day rite b4 lunch break and just stay at the bar for rest of the day and couple times went fishin! Been working since we first got em,week after memorial day weekend! I want to punch my self rite in the mouth for not thinking of this earlier. Also,probly gonna try and get on with a couple other job sites for different contractors soon too! 🏗👷♂️wrap it up boys! 🍻 🐒💥💩⁉️

EXACTLY the sides of the eyes will spot the movement better than the full eyes
The flush occurred at the 2:30 mark and was just over his left shoulder. He said it was a young doe.

Blackie I hunted both cotton tail and swamp bunnies all my youth and never ran across a bunny that big. I think I I would have run across one that big I would have run faster that the bunny but in the opposite direction. LOL

Hey Mister, how often generally, does one encounter snakes down south? Im from Michigan, its a non issue, but my grandsons are growin up in Va and soon moving to Ky. They are 5 and 6. I will be visiting more and doing more with them outdoors. Whats most important regarding snakes in the hotter thicker environment?
If it had been a cryptid, it would have launched at your neck. But seriously, that deer had legs far too long to be a rabbit and was too quiet to be a dog.

I'm not so sure, and I disagree. As a "hunter," it is inarguably 1000x easier to spot something moving horizontally across your line of sight. You open lanes of light where there was none, AND you make "dark" (ie: block) lines of sight that were bright. And by raising your waving your white flag (hand) in the air??? I spot movement long before I know what it is. That was a semi tame city deer. I've snuck up to within 20 feet of a Wild deer I had NO IDEA was there! Could have gotten closer if I knew it was there.
It looked more like a doe, or a large dog, to me.
i saw no tail but the size was right for that

I'm got some coveralls made up that match the waines coating and pale blue paint above it from a picture of the wall that the vault door of the tiny 2 person bank that is located in a small corner of our local grocery store digitally printed on the entire front of coveralls and on front of ski mask and back of pair of gloves opposite sides are printed to match inside of vault from a picture of what it looks like from Mana,gers desk when you look that direction from that exact spot any typical work day. We also had cardboard cut outs made in 3 different positions of the detail gang at work and have been setting them in various places and poses every day rite b4 lunch break and just stay at the bar for rest of the day and couple times went fishin! Been working since we first got em,week after memorial day weekend! I want to punch my self rite in the mouth for not thinking of this earlier. Also,probly gonna try and get on with a couple other job sites for different contractors soon too! 🏗👷♂️wrap it up boys! 🍻
