How to Switch Email Addresses A COMPLETE GUIDE

Step 1: Use the Signature feature in your iPhone, iPad, Mac, etc. and add in a message that announces the upcoming change.
Step 2: Use unroll.me to find out what mailing lists you DO want to continue to receive. Of these, you'll ultimately break them all down into two groups: newsletters & e-blasts and websites where you have an account. Any websites that have an account will need to be updated to reflect your new e-mail address.
Step 3: Transfer all your old email from the old account into the new account. You really need either Apple Mail or Outlook to do this (or another 3rd party equivalent). Keep in mind that when you drag and drop your files from one account to the other, that it will take time to make this change. Do not rush it!
Step 4: Migrate your contacts, calendars, and any other data that may be stored inside your old address. Once again, this will require a computer. Export from the old account and import it into the new account.
Step 5: Let your contacts know via e-blast of your new address. NOTE: you have a limit as to how many e-mails you can send in one day. Typically this is between 200-800.
Step 6: See the video. Timecode is 6:15
Step 7: Enable auto-forwarding on your old account. You'll want to keep it this way for likely 3-6 months. This just allows you to continue to receive e-mail sent to the old account as your contacts learn to switch your contact information over.
Step 8: After you feel comfortable with the transition, turn off auto-forward and turn on auto-reply with some sort of message to the sender that informs them that the account has been closed.

Great video David, I have a huge issue with Mail and Calendar from Mac, especially scheduling on behalf of my boss. Our email provider apparently only provides email services, although my boss has shared all her calendars with me I can block them, but if I need to invite someone the email will never go out, event from my own calendar. I´ve always used PC and Gmail or Outlook and never had these problems. I have a year battling over this with basically all Mac features. -What do you suggest? Thank you.

I wish this had been around 3 years ago when I switched from Comcast to gmail. I was delighted to dump Comcast but it was pretty confusing for a while and I'm sure I missed some mail I would have liked to see. At the time I was told that Comcast completely deactivated my account but I can't imagine they gave the address to someone else. Any thoughts?

Re. copying old yahoo email to new gmail, 1) how do you know which emails will be transferred? 2) can you keep the original dates? 3) is it possible to move folders into the new categories of "labels" in gmail? 4) when you get the long process going, what confirmation are you given that it is finished? I have spoken with several others who also would like help with the yahoo > gmail migration. Could this be a possible tutorial topic, as no one else has addressed this as specifically as we would like. TIA!

I don’t what happened to my old email account, I could not get into it at all. I created a new email address in outlook and for some reason all my folders appeared but not the emails. My problem the contacts have not transferred. I’m on an iPad Pro. Any help would be appreciated.

Don;t move all emails from old account folders to new account folders, copy then check new v old then delete the folders once you have checked the copy has worked.

How does this effect using a password manager if your email address is your user name?
If you are using 1Password you should be able to use that list of websites instead of the one you’d theoretically create in step 2.
David, I think the question may have been in reference to if one is using one’s current email as the user name to login to 1Password, LastPass, etc. One of three possibilities exist: You may be able to change the user name to your new email, you may not, or it may get updated once you update your email in your profile. BTW, great vid, as usual. I’m curious as to your recommendation for iCloud over Gmail. I’m not arguing the point, just curious. I know they are both IMAP services, but I’d like to understand your rationale if you would.
I am a heavy Apple ecosystem user, but I’ve been using Gmail since you needed an invite to join, so I am not up on all that may be beneficial on iCloud. One big downer to using Gmail’s service is keeping contacts in sync, since in order to keep contacts up to date everywhere you have to enter new contacts in Gmail in a browser. If I enter a new contact into my iPhone address book, it doesn’t get captured in Google Contacts, and the big G doesn’t make a contact app for iPhone.

lol my old email got blocked so I can’t even get into it. Not many websites I use though. Meh I don’t care because I’m not really interested in the local shooting club and crap like that. No one can access the email until I verify it so....... It’s still secure i think.

I would never recommend using your internet providers email service. Many many reasons.
