Beautiful to hear of Dharma practiced by prisoners in the penitentiary. While I was living in NY at the Temple, one of my son’s good friends went to prison for a non violent crime. I saw him as a kind and gentle human being. I sent him Transform your Life. He enjoyed it. I made prayers for him. He was released early. 😊
Hi, Yes, we can inadvertently neglect sectors of our society - and their potential. Years ago one of the projects I developed was to fight racism in the criminal justice system. I recruited one of my best team members directly from prison. She was in for murder. I've seen incredible kindness and compassion in offenders. Recently I met one of my GP students whom I had not see for a while. I asked where he had been. "In prison. 6 months" he replied remarkably happily. "All that meditation made it a positive experience one you got used to the noise." My favourite restaurant is inside a prison run by the inmates. So best wishes in your endeavours. Jeff, KMC Manchester 😊
Thank you so much for all this practical advice. And I think it is really incredible that you spent nine years serving the prison system in this way. Loved all your stories!!!
Fantastic talk. Thank you. Those in prison are there because of extremes of delusions and extremes of suffering so i think these people in particular need our compassion rather than aversion. As said: this doesnt mean we approve of such non virtuous behaviour. But we do see the gold in all and their potential to change.
Not related to Buddhism, but the movie Sing Sing (set in Sing Sing prison), is about a program that allows for theatre to be presented by inmates. Most of the actors are former prisoners who participated in the program. Yoga, the arts, animal rehab and meditation are great programs for inmates.
@learnsteelguitarinretirement Thanks for tuning in and for your comment. The focus of our channel is sharing practical Buddhist wisdom through conversations with practitioners from the Kadampa lineage of Buddhism, so you can expect all future guests to be practising this particular tradition. I've no doubt there is an abundance of inspiring content elsewhere that showcases the value and experiences of practitioners from other Buddhist traditions.

@@modernbuddhismpodcast and the movie rcd 3 Oscar nominations. Lead actor, adapted screenplay and original song. It’s worth watching.
❤❤❤
It seems that most of your guests come from the Tibetan lineage. Any chance you will book Theravada monks, especially from the Thai Forest tradition.
