      I've always disliked Brandon. I felt really unconfortable reading that character, he was a creepy old pervert in my eyes, and I was outraged by the words of the end of the book, where Elinor and Edward pushed her to marry him, to thank him for his generosity. I felt as if poor Marianne was treated like an object, given to a creepy old man

    I am so impressed that Emma Thompson wrote the script for this version of Sense & Sensibility. I only wish she and Ang Lee would collaborate again on other Jane Austen works. Northanger Abbey and Persuasion have never been done as they should. I know these two enormously talented people could make those stories sing as they should.

  • @cz2165
    @cz2165 3 ปีที่แล้ว +343

    The scene near the end when Emma Thompson as Elinor realizes Edward (Hugh Grant)is not actually married, when she breaks down into hysterical sobs of happiness, that is one of the best acting scenes of all time, and great writing by Emma Thompson. It is laugh out loud funny at the same time. So memorable.

    • @freshwaterwi
      @freshwaterwi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      I remember seeing this film in the theater and --because i knew the book-- being shocked when Elinor burst out sobbing! But the entire theater laughed and it was , in my mind, the perfect perect resolution of her "sense" in this story. So human....

      Indeed. I watched this movie during my military service in Taiwan. It was played in the base as a part of “family day” event, and I sat in between my guard shifts that day. When Elinor bursted into tears, so did I in my full uniform. Such a powerful moment.

    When I first watched this film, It was like a 20 years ago. and I did not even realize the fact that It's Ang Lee movie. I learned this was his first English movie. His movies are always visionary beautiful, not to mention emotionally rich. Emma Thompson's script writing and Ang Lee direction is such a wonderful collaboration. And the music by Patrick Doyle is also really beautiful.
    Despite the fact that it's a brilliant adaption of Jane Austin nobel, I could not ignore the fact that Alan Rickman is completely stealing the show without his intension. His portrayal of the Col.Brandon was so dignified, subtle, warm hearted and elegant. He plays so unassumingly, but deadly efficient. After He appeared in this movie I could not help myself only watching him, his facial expressions, posture, and that voice....totally mesmerized. Recently I watched a movie again, I could not stop crying after the end credit started, knowing Alan is not in this world anymore. I really miss him.......It feels like part of my life has gone with him.

      That's very true. I've often thought the same thing. I wonder if part of it, along with the general lack of maturity today, is also because we don't see it as much, so it's like when people long ago got all excited by seeing a lady's ankle. If everyone saw them all the time, would they be as "silly" over them? I don't know. Overall though, I think the lack of maturity in adults is the biggest issue.

      I was surprised by that, too. I spent a number of years in Austin Texas. Part of the culture there involves women dressing as sexual as they possibly can. With far more cleavage showing, very short skirts, everything skin tight, and very high narrow heels. In that particular part of the culture, dressing extremely sexually is actually expected of women. So, having lived there for years and seeing that, the dresses in this movie seemed very conservative in contrast to me.

    I went back and checked all of the Oscar nominees and winners for movies released in 1995. While it is true that Emma Thompson won for her screenplay, Sense & Sensibility otherwise got shortchanged in so many respects. You have to wonder where the Academy's sensibilities were when they voted 25 years ago. Perhaps it has taken the passage of time for the public's senses to see just how close to perfect this movie really is.

    15:00 "Testosterone exploding into the room" 😆👏 brilliantly put! By the way, I've always wondered why Emma Thompson didn't include the Willoughby scene at the Palmer's; maybe she thought it could probably somehow improve his image to the audience? Anyway, the image of him watching the wedding from the distance conveys the feeling of that scene very well. This movie is so beautifully done, everyone involved in it was perfect! Chapeau! 😌👏

    What an absolutely perfect film this is. The acting is incredible from all the crew from the main characters to those that had relatively short appearances but were unforgettable such as Hugh Laurie and Imelda Staunton, Robert Hardy and Elizabeth Spriggs. I watch this film at least once a year (and fall for Alan Rickman again every time!)

      I was well on my way. I just recently discovered it. I loved it immediately and watched it every night for almost a week. And then cut back to a few times a week. Sadly, my only access to it was here. And it has been removed, probably due to copyright. I didn't know it wasn't supposed to be here. And now I'm very sad that it's gone.

    I loved this movie so much, but somehow wasn’t at all surprised to realize that Emma Thompson had written the script. If you don’t sense her formidable intellect behind every movie and every interview she has ever done, then you are past hope! I read all of Austen’s novels every year from 15 to 40, when life rather took over, but loving Austen’s world as I do, this movie hit every single thing I needed it to hit (except for a nagging wish to see the long conversation between Eleanor and Willoughby when Marianne is so ill!). Obviously, everything couldn’t be kept in. And it has stood the test of time so beautifully!

    If this film was playing on the TV when I walked into the room I’d have to stop and watch it. It’s that good! Don’t forget that Emma Thompson won the academy award for best writing of an adapted screenplay for this movie and rightly so.

    Its a great movie. One of the best ever made IMHO. But how can you make a 40 minute TH-cam on the making of this film and leave out Patrick Doyle's incredible movie score?!?!?!? This is a Desert Island Disc even for someone who never saw the movie. The little harp tune ( An Excellent Notion) the lovely setting of the Ben Jonson poem, the dance music, all of this is perfectly in character with the music of Austen's time and yet can delight people like myself who love the British 20th century musical tradition. I think it is Patrick Doyle's best score and that is saying a lot. ( annoyed in Baltimore)

      Yes. The music is so fine, the cues perfectly match the emotions of the scenes, especially in the suspense at the end when Elinor and Edward finally have their great love scene -- but offstage, and the audience as well as Marianne and Mrs Dashwood

    I love almost anything Jane Austen related!!! I think Jane is a grate writer because she allowed the people in her stories to experience real life emotions. I believe that is why movies like this are so beautiful, the actors and res of the cast seem to be determined to presen all of the emotion Jane Austen used in her novels. Please may they never go away!!

    Emma Thompson was about 20 years too old for the role of Elenore, but the fact that she knocked it out of the park is a true testament of what a great actress she is. That being said, the later version with Hattie Morahan is much better version and closer to the book.
