I have to say it: I love the imperfectly looped pads/strings. That sound is what I remember from my first W-30! Takes me back! Thanks for sharing!

I definitely do, as well. It makes the W-30 feel like a sort of "Super D-50" or something.

NOTE: Original EV5 expression pedal contained TWO linear Potentiometers. But only ONE Pot (10K ohms or 50K ohms, doesnt matter! whatever you get for cheap or free) is required to have the desired controll. It does not have to be 500K ohms as shown here. Having an external box is fine if you dont want to drill a hole in your W30. But there is no reason why to add additional costs to have another plug and socket within that little project box. Just one single stereo (3pin) plug and a 2ft of 3 wire cable (or 2wire shielded) is enough. solder cable to pot, solder plug to cable, stick it in your W30, config your w30 and your sounds/patches, will work.

This video was very useful! Thanks! It's inspired me to go manual digging, and I've just discovered that my ancient GEM WX2 workstation (which in high school in the 90's I was amazed to discover allows filter cutoff adjustment in realtime via midi CC#) lets it's pedal jacks both be reassigned to continuous controllers including 'Filter 1' and 'Filter 2" or 'Filter 1+2" and 'Resonance" - this is awesome :) I love early workstations though, and have a Fantom X8 (which I don't consider early) but I'll keep my eyes peeled for the W30 should I find one for sale near me, love it's unique sounds. The S-10 is probably the closest thing.I have sound wise.

The cost-saving policy imposed on many synthesizer manufacturers starting in the 1980s, which involved removing all real-time controls, penalized many machines with interesting and versatile synthesis engines. Control change via DAW or hardware controller restores a lot of potential to those machines, allowing them a second life! Aside from this, the S-10, despite having very little RAM and quick disks as mass storage units, remains an excellent keyboard, compact in size, and allowing you to "arpeggiate" samples in a few seconds, which is very interesting for experimenting for those who couldn't afford much more expensive and inaccessible machines! Happy music-making!

I pick up a W-30 from a pawn shop for $60. Of course the display light and disk drive is noisy and a few keys don't respond. Time for surgery.
I'm going to build this box. Reminds me of my Krog Wavestation EX with that all that waveshifting. Subscribed!

hello kudos for the roland w-30 real-time! I wanted to know if it exists in order to make it work with the Roland DJ-70 so you can adjust the various TVF / TVA filters
    Thank you 🎹

Hey sorry about this I have a couple of stupid questions.
    1) Can the cable that connects to this filter box be any size?
    2) What was the font you used for the "Real time filter" label?

      2) The TR-909 font: www.dafont.com/tr909.font

I partially agree with you: surely, the available RAM is very limited compared to current possibilities, but back then it was absolutely in line with other samplers in the same price range. On the other hand, I've always found it very stimulating to have to manage this limit, keeping only the really important parts of the samples, reusing them, and crossfading them to simulate filter openings, etc. etc. Apart from this, I've always loved samplers that were as non-neutral as possible, where their limitations would turn into features that make the sound unique and recognizable: Roland's 12-bit samplers have a very full bass sound that makes them very warm. It doesn't have stereo outputs because it has 8 separate outputs, so this gives you incredible freedom to process the same signal by assigning it to different outputs, and among other things, for example, putting the left channel in output 1 and the right channel in output 2 in the final mix. It's not an immediate machine, but if studied, it can still give great satisfaction today; I think Liam Howlett is a great example of this! Happy music-making!
