Bei der Airpower 2016 in Zeltweg ging mir das Herz auf, Man sah sozusagen alles was früher bei der Schwedischen Luftwaffe im Einsatz war. My second all time favorite modern jet fighter. Love the Delta wings and cammo ones are cool looking. Crazy as the Mig-25 Foxbat wasn't know to have ever got a Radar Lock acourding to Soviet defector Lt. Victor Belenko a Foxbat driver himself. Gotta love Swedish radar technology.
@@andersmalmgren6528 We know by now, that this was because the SR-71 had to slow down a bit in order to pass Sweden on neutral waters in the narrow channel between Öland and Gotland. This fighter jet can literality start and land on a highway. It doesn't even take that long of stretch to do it either. Sweden used to have hundredths of those roads as air strips concealed for soviet. The reason was secure the ability to always react to threat and not risking to put all eggs in one basket like an conventional airbase. Today most of those hidden starting stretches has been dismantled. In present time, since the NATO/Russian arms race and rising tensions occur, we will probably start using that strategy again. We do need a lot more JAS 39 Gripen in service and battle ready. Almost 30 years of disarmament of our national defense has left us open and vulnerable if such conflict would rise. Lets hope not.
It's not that they are concealed. It's difficult to hide a 1km straight road. The idea was that there were so many so the enemy wouldn't know which one they used and if compromised, they could switch to another one within hours. However, if they were still in action they would use the normal airbases and they would only relocate if necessary.
@@azynkron no, they would switch around to new bases between each sortie, a Swedish combat pilot during the cold war was practically never assigned a specific return base once basic flight training was done, the mission briefings only contained a return vector, the flghter coordinator would then assign returning pairs to activated bases as they come back along that vector for refuelling and rearming.

And what about the highly secret rocket assisted take offs? No one knows what the needed take off strip would be.
@@JohnOlimb wait so this is like 4 levels slower than the absolute fastest takeoff the Viggen would have been capable of? At that point (afterburner, wartime engine mode, rockets) if I was a pilot I'd be scared to get crushed into a puddle by the G-forces
I like Viggen, but your Mach 3.2 is fantasy! This plane its same like Mig-23. Saab 125KN ,Mig23 127KN.Saab Mach 2,3 MIg- 2,35. Russian Mig- 23 wihitout missiles can easy fly Mach 2,5 and test- pilots 2,65. I guess that Saab can reach this top speed 2,6 Mach close to Mig -23. Mig-23 is fastest one engine plane in service. Speedmeter in cocpit of Mig-23 is Mach 3,0 !!!
Saab 37 Viggen was epic! I do have to wonder, ......does the JAS 39 Gripen have any such reverse thrust and can it pull off such easy and quick turn-around??
The JAS 39 Gripen has no reverse thrust, the Gripen uses its canards as massive air brakes. But it can turn on a dime and is extremely maneuverable on the ground for the fastest turnaround time. About 8 min to 15 min at a road base with a trained mechanic and 5 conscripts to fully equip, refuel and brief the pilot on his next mission via radio so the pilot doesn't even have to open the canopy. This video shows the canards pretty good: th-cam.com/video/w3qjfeEHJ-U/w-d-xo.htmlsi=modMZG8WaAR8I_QJ
this plane was designed to give the Soviets a nasty fucking surprise... I'm sure it would have given them nightmares if they even tried to invade Sweden.
Considering the equipment of the last manufactured Vigges, and thus the latest upgraded ones, a few of which still exist is very classified when It comes to specs, data, equipment and other systems, Im not too sure it's only half as effective. It would do just fine I promise you.
It had excellent control even at low speeds due to how the canards were placed and worked. That waving to the audience is not as easy as it looks and most fighters would stall if they tried it.
Vielen Dank! Auf Wikipedia steht dass das Triebwerk 125,04 kN Schub mit Nachbrenner erzeugt. In PS lässt sich das aber nicht umrechnen. Angaben dazu finden sich leider keine.
The Viggen jet engine has no limitation of speed, as a rocket ! But to manage this the Gas trottle was limited given Jet fuel. If not the fuel tank would be empty very quickly and jeopardising the flight Technically it can fly to the moon!

Flying like a rock
Rocket
The best Aero fighter Ever 👍
Gripen may be a better plane, but Viggen is so much cooler/brutal/menacing looking.
Saab says its going 2.3 mach.... In reality this plane does 3.2 mach... This was the MONSTER of the Cold war!
Absolute bullshit. With that engine, RM8, and that frame mach 2 is really good. Mach 3.2 is nonsense. I served as a mech on JA37 in the early nineties
No!
Awesome video
Thank you very much! :-)
O melhor vídeo
The best.
Thank you! :-)
6:17 nice sniper on the rooftop :D
It's for emergencies if for example a deer is on the air strip
@@edvinvikman9152 emh. With .50 ammo.
Sigue la tradicion de las naves vikingas, rapidas, seguras, confiables y letales.
this plane was designed to give the Soviets a nasty fucking surprise... I'm sure it would have given them nightmares if they even tried to invade Sweden.
Mommy , that is a christmas tree flying over here?
Yeah, but it would only deliver it's presents it to warsaw pact troops and ships XD
Swedish Santa is coming to town.
Really practical plane.
Double the size of Gripen - half as effective though. A real beauty and beast at the time anyways....
Considering the equipment of the last manufactured Vigges, and thus the latest upgraded ones, a few of which still exist is very classified when It comes to specs, data, equipment and other systems, Im not too sure it's only half as effective. It would do just fine I promise you.
sounds like a freekin rocket!
SAAB Made in Sweden
Thumbnail: fighter jet powered by milkyway galaxy in its tail
3-stage Afterburner! A real swedish plane only flies with Volo Flygmotor!
the only plane that locked on a SR71...
bellissimo
Low speed pass was very impressive, F-104 at that IAS would have zero roll control and probably result in a smoking hole in the ground!
It had excellent control even at low speeds due to how the canards were placed and worked. That waving to the audience is not as easy as it looks and most fighters would stall if they tried it.
Nice clip =).
Thank you Robert! Greetings to Sweden! :-)
Better then the US Air force fichter planes. thats for shure.
Good filming...Viggen where a great plane....but not the most beautiful if you waant beautiful it´s the Draken Viggen´s predecessor .
Thank you for the compliment! For me all Saab Fighters are beautiful.:-)
I agree 100%. Was going to say basically the same thing.
Draken is ugly when it is on the ground but not in air
The Viggen jet engine has no limitation of speed, as a rocket ! But to manage this the Gas trottle was limited given Jet fuel. If not the fuel tank would be empty very quickly and jeopardising the flight
Technically it can fly to the moon!
those people, living close to Air Bases, and complaining of the noise from the F-35, the don't know, anything about noise, if you want noise choose a Swedish Aircraft, .
Yep, i growed up near Karup, the main base of the Danish Drakens, and a quiet day was a LONG THUNDER, , have newer heard the Wiggen op close, but it is by, told to , be a little bit more, and the Grippen, my ears tells me, , just from using , inbuilt mics, she's is the Queen, ,, . No matter, the Swedes, have don , an amazing job. The USA and The Soviets, must have, WTF, from time to time, .
I've had both Viggen and Gripen fly by very low over my country house. Its not that loud actually. But it does sound impressively. Since they are so fast, you don't really hear them coming until they are really close.
I do not know who sounds the most, but I lived near F1 and the dragon was, at least, loud, very loud
huge engine
Fucking Brutal 💪🏻
