  • Peruvemba - East - 100 Agraharams Project
The Palakkad to Pollachi railway line bisects Peruvemba. The East side has more footfalls. The Peruvemba East village's proximity to the Ootukulangara Bhagavathy Temple makes the already flourishing village, affluent.
I love the location of the Thirunageswaram Sivan Temple just outside the agraharam as it reminds me of picture perfect locales like the Rishi Narada Mangalam temple amidst green fields.
Located about 18 kilometers from the Palakkad railway station and about half a kilometer front the Oottukulangara Bhagavathy Temple, this agraharam is well maintained. You don't want to miss the impeccably preserved traditional homes and importantly on the road that connects to the Shiva temple.
I have always felt that festivals and celebrations are an integral part of Agraharams. However I have always strongly felt the need for building institutions in and around agraharams. Schools, Hospitals, Vocational training schools etc. It is one of the important ways to sustain our Dharma. Peruvemba East agraharam, I am happy to say, have donated the land and building to enable the government run a school which helps many around the area. The gramam also keeps doing improvement to the facilities at the school.
When I sat down to edit this agraharam yesterday, Sri Peruvemba Seshu Venkatakrishnan reached out to me by email and sent the following: "My paternal great grandfather Rao Bahadur PV Seshu Iyer is my earliest known connection to the village. He was also called Ana Patta as he had an elephant in his back yard. Seshu Iyer was a great mathematician of his times and has been President of Indian Mathematical society for many years. He was conferred the Rao Bahadur title by the British empire for his service to Math. He was principal of Kumbakonam college and subsequently a Professor of Math at Presidency college. When he was at Kumbakonam college, Ramanujan was a student there. Ramanujan was a math genius but didn't do well at other classes. Ramanujan 's genius was recognized then by Prof Seshu Iyer. Ramanujan kept in touch with Seshu Iyer and subsequently met with Seshu Iyer in Chennai. There he showed him his notebook on Math problems he solved. Seshu Iyer recognized this genius and wrote to Prof Hardy at Oxford University attaching a couple of pages from Ramanujan 's notebook telling him about this brilliant student. The World got to see Ramanujan 's brilliance as a result."
"Peruvemba, a village in Kerala, is known for its high-quality percussion instruments crafted by the Kadachi Kollan community. These instruments, such as mridangam and chenda, are sought after by musicians across south India. The community has a history of over 200 years in instrument-making, transitioning from metalsmiths to instrument craftsmen due to the influence of Carnatic music in Palakkad."
When you go to Peruvemba, spend time at both the gramams, East and West while you go to the Bhagavathy temple. I respect the residents for keeping some of the homes intact with a traditional look. I see the outside and inside of a beautifully maintained agraharam home and I weep for my lost agraharam home in Kalpathy. It was, like all agraharam homes, priceless.
    Radhe Krishna

Among the few videos I have watched in the series, this is the best one so far. The narrator - Sri Krishnan has presented an excellent overview of the village - how to get there, famous people from the village, beautiful views of the streets, public well (which I am astounded to see still exists!) etc. Wonderful video and thank you for sharing.

My ancestors belonged to this Agraharam. My great grandfather with three other brothers migrated from here. A total Vaideeka family found it difficult to get Upadhyayam. The eldest one Raghunathan first left in search of work and finally the four settled in Parlikad. One of them Ranganathan did not marry. Their next generation was also into Vaideekam. 8 houses of the family belonging to Kauntinya Gotram were there. Two others from the Gramam and belonging to Naidrupakashyapa Gotram were there in Parlikad.
At least once in a year we visit Peruvemba Oottukulangara Bhagawathi who is our Kuladevi (our Atimakkavu). We also have Darshanam at Sivankovil blessed with a wonderful priest. With great humility and sense of belonging I love to come to this village where our ancestors lived. This video also helped me to know which was our original village in Kumbhakonam. Romba thanks. Bhagawathi sahayam🙏🙏🙏

Beautiful explanation of my village (Peruvamba). Myself Grandson of Late Venkateswara Iyer (PICHU MESHU) was staying at second house of Trinageswara Street. When I was in 7th standard the house was sold by my Periappa (Late Ganapathy). I am the son of Late P V Krishnan.

Transported back in time to this ancestral village - this Agraharam ... the streets, homes, scenery have changed substantially (ofcourse) - I remember though the ganapathy temple and the well in the middle of the street vividly (many many decades later) - also noticed the electrical lines, scooters, many more cars ... and yet something remains frozen in time ... certainly the inside of the temple that was shown - where they used to throw coconuts for the kids to pick up pieces ... amazing what 21st century technology can do to help recall the past from many many decades - still wonder how life has changed and what has remained frozen in time and will be that way for a long, long time
