@@hyakkimaru_666 guess there needs to be a LOT of feedback, because in my experience they never read it until something is boycotted/banned by players and sales got really bad (remember how much Genshin players hated the fact that HSR players got better rewards during holiday events - and even after that issue got hyped all over the communities, Hoyo just ignored it) I still hate the fact that on my birthday I got nothing but the stupid cake, well it's my birthday... It would be nice to have some rewards?.. Not a collectible cake?.. I'm so disappointed as a female player. Not necessarily because of the lack of males but because i know that they're going to start prioritizing male fan service over actual story and characterization. I've been a fan of genshin for awhile now and it actually makes me so sad.

Hoyo thinks we are stupid. They use the lamest excuses when they dont want to do something. Remember the whole not adding endgame excuse because they didn't want to stress the players out? And yet the most stressful thing in this game is losing 50/50's and rolling on the weapon banner. But no, they are talking nonsense when they say male characters will drive the female players away? the equal gender ratio was what made genshin stand out, it made the game have actual characters instead of others in the genre that only have waifus and husbandos.
Eh, I'd argue almost every single character in this game is too one dimensional to be described as having an actual personality, if that's what you mean. But still, it did make genshin stand out.

For real. For Fontaine I was locked in, I was invested in every character, fangirling for every character that showed up, and I was immediately playing the archon quest the second it updated. Like right on the dot i set an alarm for when the update was finished so I could play the quest. I was so invested in the story, participating and learning theories and lore for the entirety of the main Fontaine quest. But when the natlan update dropped, everything was kinda meh. The trailer itself dashed everything I was hoping natlan would be. I played act 1 and 2 of the quest and haven’t seen the rest since. It was boring and I didn’t feel the same interest and high I did when playing Fontaine. Like I was even locked in during the so called boring fortress of meropide act. I actually liked it. But the natlan quest felt so…small? The way everything was treated while the story SAYS is a big deal, the stuff happening felt so small. But fontaines court drama was actually engaging, the natlan arena fight was kinda meh. The only thing I liked about the act 1 and 2 was kinich and he didn’t get much screen time so I got bored. When capitano showed up I got interested again but then it was only for like 2 mins. Mavuika herself as an archon and character was…kinda boring imo. Furina’s backstory and behaviour was compelling, nahida was creepy but endearingly comical, Raiden was intimidating and terrifying, Zhongli is mysterious and knowledgeable, venti is whimsical and also mysterious. But mavuika… Maybe I’m judging her even tho I’ve only done act 1 and 2. But even during act 1 and 2 of Fontaine I felt more emotion towards furina than I do towards mavuika. That emotion might have been annoyance but at least it was not complete apathy. Also, I just have to say that I abhor mavuika’s design. Every other archon’s clothing made sense but mavuika’s makes zero sense. It isn’t even nice to look at. Just a black bodysuit. Genshin is a fantasy game, why is there a bodysuit??? She lives in NATLAN??? It’s HOT??? I understand she’s maybe based off of maori bikers, but even mythology wise it makes zero sense. It’s so random😭😭. Any symbolism in her outfit is only like maybe 5% of what she’s wearing, it’s only the literal symbols on her outfit that make references to mythology. Her silhouette itself is flat, she has no layers that gives her clothing texture other than those symbols carved into the suit. It’s entirely black with some red and gold accent, and some skin showing. It’s so fanservicey. Zhongli’s outfit screamed china, venti’s was very obviously medieval Germany, furina was so french, raiden’s was obviously Japanese, nahida was very Indian. But mavuika doesn’t have that same special spark that the other archons had. Who looks at her outfit and thinks “ahh Latin America”. Not even her skin looks Latin American😭😭. Natlan playable characters mostly being white makes zero sense considering how white ppl in Latin America, Africa, and Phillipines is such a small amount in comparison to the tanned skinned ppl in those countries. When my white passing sister and her white friend were in the Phillipines they got so many stares and ppl complimenting them saying they were very beautiful. Ppl in a store would literally go out of their way to gawk at the rare “white” person, that’s how rare seeing a white person is for them.
I thought the most popular characters are Furina and Nahida? Not Xiao and Wanderer? The Scaranation does not make up for 3/4 of the entire community for Genshin

Genshin is trying to attract more players so I think out of fandom popularity characters might be focused one more since they attract people. I think most people outside the genshin community know wanderer way more than Furina and Nahida. If you point at a picture of Wanderer many people will know him over Furina because he’s older (release wise) and has a possibly bigger fan base. Nahida isn’t that popular outside of genshin, I’ve seen more merch of Hu Tao and Klee than her

I've found Western and Japanese male players seem to have no issue with pulling male characters, but in China and Korea, where Hoyo listens more, there's a big aversion to them amongst the most vocal parts of the community.

That argument is always so stupid lmao, Zhongli and Kazuha are both male yet they sell very well. It all comes down to kit tbh, no matter the gender, no matter the design, no matter the lore, if a character has a busted kit im sure everyone want to pull for them
too bad, because one of the reasons many people attracted to genshin/star rail, was the balanced number of male & female characters. i find male-only or female-only games kinda insufficient or boring.

This is what baffles me the most. HSR sells male characters like crazy! The only male character that didn't sell as much was Boothill, who was unfortunate to be after Robin and before Firefly! And I know a lot of people are planning on pulling for him on his rerun in 3.0! (heck, I have Boothill (and Robin❤)). And Genshin has also sold their male characters quite well, so I don't know what they are talking about lol
Which is dumb because the player demographic is almost evenly split to begin with. And it's not just female players pulling on male characters, both genders of all ages do. They pull BOTH.

Hoyo straight up rejecting money by making capitano unplayable:) like so many ppl were waiting for his banner, he even had more hype than the pyro archon. Also remember when a lot of players pulling on Chasca to get Ororon? Male characters can sell but hoyo just refuse them:)
Been playing Genshin consistently since IT RELEASED. Never felt burn out and played all the time. Ever since Natlan came out...I don't want to play anymore. I loved how in Fontaine we had some of the coolest male characters and such a cool story. We have ALWAYS had way more female characters and now they want it to be even less male characters? If this is true it will actually make me leave the game as someone who has played almost every day since it released. It feels like they don't care as much about the story anymore as well. Hopefully the next area will save it.
I feel like Wrio would/will also if they hadn’t sandwiched him between Neuv and Fischl, and then locked him in the basement. Hopefully we’ll see soon(tm).
As a genshin player, I feel bored with the lack of male characters. Not that I hate female characters, but if I wanted to have only female characters I would be playing Honkai Impact instead of Genshin

The lack of male characters is not only boring and trite but also shows how susceptible Hoyo is to the idea of making even _more_ money than the billions they already have. I may be biased as a female player (Lyney & Alhaitham main lmao) but the lack of male characters is just so…nasty? It exacerbates the issue of Chinese male players being so overly sensitive and aggressive when they don’t get the same cookie-cutter sexualized anime women. It’s not only the lack of male characters-the new female characters they’re releasing feel like they have to be _perfect._ Like Mary Sues. Furina was an amazing female character-and she was amazing without being sexualized and she had FLAWS. The new female characters feel like cardboard. Like they’re not allowed to have or bring in any conflict-inward or outward. I ranted a little longer than I meant to. Whoops :(
I am more and more convinced that Sumeru and Fontaine were peak of the game. Natlan is... strange. The story, locations and music are good, but the design! Design - is the main problem with Natlan and its characters!

I love the landscape in Natlan but the characters have been such a let down. The only Natlan 5* I pulled was Kinich half for Exploration and half because I wanted to pull on Ajaw tail and throw him around.

Yup, I saw Mausau in Mauvika’s story quest and with his design being really cool and him being set to possibly be playable and basically no other dude in sight, I’ve stopped pulling for anyone until he comes along and atp I’ll be sleeping on a hoard of primos for c6 so I won’t even need to swipe Shame too cuz I’ve actually spent into the thousands on this game on both female and male characters but it’s been such a gooner fest that I haven’t spent more than $100 since Kinich till now and I won’t be spending for the foreseeable future until Mausau if we even get him

I’ve seen a lot of people say “female characters sell more” yada yada, but just look at “love and deepspace”, it’s a gacha game whose characters are all male, yet their revenue (from what I’ve seen) is always near the top, it even has surpassed Genshin on some occasions

that's because games like love and deepspace are specifically marketed towards people who like that kind of stuff with content that appeals to them. genshin is not marketed towards those people and the playerbase still is mostly male you are the minority. go play games marketed towards you.

I'm seeing husbando enjoyers actually thinking about leaving, because they have too many pulls and no banners in Natlan that interest them yet. These leaks about the only confirmed upcoming male character being Ifa (4*) have caused the opposite reaction. Not to mention that Wriothesley holds the curse of being a man AND cryo so he hasn't had a rerun when almost everyone in Fontaine has, some even more than once. Some male 4* who are liked by female players have taken over a year to have reruns, like Kaveh and Heizou. idk what they're thinking, especially when their second biggest market, Japan, adores a lot of male Genshin characters (Kinich is really popular there because of his and Ajaw's VAs.) Even the Chinese incels' worst nightmare, Wanderer, keeps winning popularity polls in weibo. Personally, despite liking male characters a lot more I pull for characters of all genders, but it's reached a point where I've been getting a lot of accidental 5*s this year trying to get the new boys because, except for Kinich, they've all been 4*! It's even more vile when you think about it because you're not guaranteed, so husbando collectors will end up pulling on a banner forever since they can't get even C0 Ororon. I got 3 early Chascas. While trying to pull Sethos, I got one Nahida and one Dehya. I know, my own fault for building pity, but this hasn't happened to me before this often.

I ABSOLUTELY agree about husbando enjoyers, since I myself have pulled weapon event FOR THE FIRST TIME recently, just because I don't know where else to spend my pulls. The only character I really want to pull is Cyno, but I have most of the other chracters I wanted. I really think that if no new 5* male characters appear, my plan is next: 1) Wait for Cyno 2) Pull for weapons 3) Pull for constellations 4) Pull for any male characters and avoid pulling for female characters on principle Earlier I wouldn't spend any primogems on weapon or constellations bcs I thought I still have more nice guys to pull for, but THAT'S how bad the situations with guys is. That bad that recently I pulled my first 5* on weapon event, Neuvillette's weapon
@acheba_nitsa I'm actually a C2R1 Cyno main and his weapon is super worth it. If you're going next for him and you're also maining Neuvi, may I suggest trying to get Baizhu from the Liyue banner now if you don't have him already? He might disappear after 5.3 and he's pretty good in teams for both of them. I think he's a better investment for a future Cyno than his cons
As a woman... I want to play with men. Like, I love female characters, but it's too much, I like playing with handsome men. Neuvillette and Kazuha are my favorites, not just because of their looks, but also because of their personalities. This update left me disappointed, I liked Kinich, but Ororon is just... weird. Not to mention they overdid it with the female fanservice. I just want more tall, strong men to play with 😔
I thought Ororon was a bit odd at first too. They made him pretty dubious especially with the whole "betraying natlan" thing they did with him. I also didn't like how Citlali treated him when they were shown together. I think if they gave him like a hangout where you get to see more about him being a gardener/aphid enthusiast, he might not be so bad. Unfortunately Natlan was more about NPCs than any other region, and it made very short and incomplete impressions of the actual playable characters.

My problem with Ororon is not his personality, it's his appearance for reasons of: he looks like a member of a 2010 band from Brazil called Restart.... I just can't take the boy seriously.
I like Ororon because of the gap moe, edgy guy who's just a socially awkward veggie boi. That being said, I hate how they infantilize him so much and make him out to be a useless moron when he really isn't, he's just a dude who's a bit weird because he barely socializes with anyone and spends a lot of his time out in the woods by himself, they should really have leaned into his more caring and selfless side and made him a "Ride or die" type of character Hell, they could have made a running gag with him where he's just ready to throw himself into suicidal situations for our sake
It's not fair. It honestly feels disrespectful. I know in the long run this isn't a big deal, but it makes a large portion of not just genshin, but every gacha game start to be stuck in a chokehold by highly sexualized and overused female tropes. I'm a girl too, and I'm sick of seeing no male characters and I'm sick of sexualized female characters.

Hoyo must know if they made someone like Capitano playable he'd make more sales than Mavuika. He had more build up and majority of people prefer him. Despite how dirty Natlan did him he's still relatively well received. With the only reason people disliking him being due to his fans or how he was handled.

During their recent player survey, I complained about the lack of male characters. I doubt if they'll listen, but still. It's upsetting that they're catering to the male players and only releasing a few male characters to "stop the female players from leaving". Feels pretty rude to me

And sure, some of the western players enjoy yuri, but that doesn't apply to all of us, and I've seen a lot of other people complain about the lack of male characters, so it's not just me

It never was 1:1 male & female before. I joined during the first year and it was clear the overall female ratio was favored and had 3 females to every 1 male. Sumeru was the exception and had quite a lot on the male focus. Then it just became less and less. I was happier when Genshin wasn’t so heavily waifu-baiting it’s audience. I guess I’ll let my 300+ wishes rot for a while.
I saved almost 500 pulls because of that. I pulled for Mavuika, because she's the Archon (I'm Archon collector) and I liked her character, and her weapon. It's so sad cause their so good at making both boy and girl characters, but their making less boys because they think their girl players aren't as important and they think most people only like characters of the opposite gender, but outside of the boys that only watch anime for the sexy girls that constantly have fanservice, the gender of the characters doesn't really matter if a character will be popular. Don't forget aswell a few years back they teased the archons and the dendro archon was clearly going to be male and they changed it, I (as a male) was hoping the pyro archon was going to be male as having only 2 of the 7 being male didn't sit right with me was slightly disappointed when mauvika was revealed, I still love her but kinda wish we had another male archon

Because they primarily cater to the CN audience first and foremost. If CN says more females, then Hoyo is gonna oblige, regardless of the thoughts of the global playerbase. That's pretty much any gacha in general though. It's just being a lot more noticeable in GI recently.

They have basically proven 404 right with the last live stream. In the silhouette teaser, everyone to the left of skirk is theorized to be a 4* (Iansan, Dahlia, Ifa) and everyone to the right of Skirk including Skirk herself would be 5*. They said so themselves they want to return to their roots, which is waifu games like HI3 and GGZ. Everyone else was just a nice bump of cash along the way to put Genshin into mainstream, but now that they don't need the publicity/growth anymore they are showing their 'true' colors.

@@ErisNoir Tbh I still enjoyed the game in Fontaine and probably would've also defended them back then. But you can feel the shift towards the end of Fontaine/4.8 Summer and then more so as we go into Natlan. It's not just the ratio of characters either, its the world immersion, character designs, and impact to the story that comes along with the further skewed ratios. I'm also not a fan of the Nightsoul mechanic and how its more impactful to the meta than pneuma-ousia was, not even touching on powercreep and how crazy some constellations like Xilonen's are. I genuinely don't want to pull for that many Natlan characters, but skipping them inconveniences me not just in abyss but also overworld exploration becomes more cumbersome if you're a "have-not" (on my account every region 100% except for Natlan atm) Back in Fontaine if someone had told me that they wanted to scale down male characters further I would've said "Nah, this is probably the sweet spot between appeasing the CN ifmalenoplay players but also not making the game a generic waifu gacha either, they won't change the formula too dramatically" but after the change over from Cai Haoyu to Da Wei somehow the situation has further degraded beyond my expectations...

I'm a girl and I've started playing Genshin couple of months after the release because I saw Zhongli everywhere. And since then, I've never took a break because I simply had fun. But man, I've been so frustrated since Natlan release and I think Citlali and Mizuki are my last straw. Don't get me wrong, I love female characters as well and I don't mind my ladies being sexy but the type of fanservice that's in the game lately is different and leaves bad taste in my mouth. The omissions of male characters on top of that plus the underutilisation of the existing male characters just pisses me off. If something doesn't change soon, then I will be saying bye bye to this game and focus just on HSR.

The "male characters dont sell" argument is redundant. Male banners did sell and some were popular af and brought a lot of money in (for example scaramouche). Plus banner sales arent the only source of money. Merch is one example and male characters merch is POPULAR (scaramouche merch sells out quickly.) If genshin had no male characters, many many people would never even have given it a chance, because anime waifu gacha never had a great reputation and less players means less income. Pure waifu banners hurt the game as we all can see: the banner sell HALF of what they sold last year, many players are leaving the game and the remaining waifu lovers get drained. There is way less cosplayers or fanart/work about natlan characters which is usually free promo for hoyo which shouldnt be overlooked either. Things have changed for worse. Variety and the option to choose are always better than just deleting a fundamental part of the game without any explanations and alienating every player thats not a "waifu only" player. From a business standpoint it doesnt make sense how hoyo handled genshin the last year and from a players perspective its incredibly frustrating, especially if you loved this game dearly.
Of course it’s frustrating ! I stayed through the game because I desperately wanted to get Zhongli, and I keep staying because I want three male 4* characters. I don’t have problem with female characters, but having the majority of time ONLY female characters dropping is getting incredibly boring and definitely not exciting at all.
Another reason why male characters generate less money than females is that Genshin always had an unbalanced male to female ratio and the people who wanted the male characters often saved their primos for their banners so they didn't have to spend a lot of money. Baizhu, for example, was one of the worst banners money-wise because everyone who wanted him had ages to save up for him, so they did. Also, a lot of male banners just had terrible timing - like Wriothesley, who was released between an Archon and the much more anticipated other tall male of Fontaine, there was no way he was ever going to make a lot of money.

Wriothesley C0 is objectively the weakest dps 5* in Fontaine, and obviously they put him before the Archon. Cyno ended up dissapointing for the community, 2.X males are A-tier at the best. Baizhu is really good instead, probably fews players needed his role + his banner placement. I don't saying to make all the meta, but if you are interested to sell them, try to make more appealing males gameplay-wise
This is just.... weird. Zhongli, four years after his release, is still one of the most popular characters in their biggest playerbase: China and Japan. Consistently with their other games too, male characters in ZZZ (recent release of Harumasa Asaba and Lighter), male characters in HSR (with Jingyuan being the ONLY character that has ever broke their top up servers because people are whaling TOO DAMN HARD FOR HIM ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE BANNER) the male characters always sells. And not only sells, they sell WELL. Because inherently, if it's female characters people want..... they don't have to play genshin lol. There are more pervy, gooner baity games out there that caters to them. And right now, with how genshin designs their female characters to be "u - uwu twaveler!" it isn't even looking great for the female character enjoyers.
My guess is that they never intended to make things equal. They released a lot of male characters at the beginning to become mainstream, but I don’t think that was a long term goal. After all, they’re a group of otakus who have always liked the same type of anime girl. At this point players who enjoy to play with male characters have two options, quit the game, or accept the change and wait for the sporadic male character release. It’s kind of sad because Genshin had a lot of potential for uniqueness. I really like their male characters.
Remember how we got 1600 primos for free at 5.0 because Hoyo had to revert a "fix" they did on Neuvilette that made him weaker and not able to do the "spin to win" anymore? They were certainly doing that to push sales for Mualani. I think this could have to do with the change on the devs leadership, with Da Wei taking over from Cai Haoyu. This brought many good things for gameplay, UI, general QoL, but maybe also did this to character design and writting.
Just saying, most didn't think Chasca would be good. Felt gimmicky, her flying around on a big weapon. But once you had her, she grew on you and you enjoyed the character. But very few pulled for Chasca thinking she would be great.
I think that all comution in China to make Ororon a 5 star should have been enough proof that male characters are profitable. So I really don't understand Genshin decision on that. Maybe in the next region they will take that feedback, but we know that Genshin normally takes 4 years to understand some feedback... so we wait...
I think that hoyo is going on a bad direction with the male 5 star situation, because it feels fo me that they want the game to be more played by people who only play with 1 hand. Lets hope they see this mistake and start relesing more males. At least kinich(the last 5 star male released) is really good and fun to play.

I feel like theres that reason why we dont see a little boy playable model, all the childe characters we have playable are little girl models, i see this as a way to market towards creeps, yes there are creeps out there who like little boys but its quite strange we never had a playable child boy. This is the actual reason of why I have a problem with asian games in general. They generally don't think about audiences as a variety of people who share same interests but only a certain group of people that shares certain interests and traits of personality. And it might be profitable for them but that is very limiting for their creativity and the players options for a character. The same thing is happening in ZZZ, during the first release we got interesting male character designs: Lycaon, Ben, Billy Kid and Anthon. And yes there were still more female characters but the male characters attracted so much attention and they are some of the most popular characters in that game. But now we got more bland anime female characters and the only few male characters that we got in the new update are also bland as heck too. Especially Harumasa, gosh his design is so.... It just doesn't have any taste. The only exception is Lighter more or less.

Hoyoverse and other gacha game companies are playing safe and while it might be profitable now when you overuse the same formula all over again it just get tiring and as we saw with other companies you know that won't work in a few years or maybe months. Game developers need to challenge themselves and try to make at least something different. People love different things when done well, and that's why you need feedback from all your audience, not only the ones you want to pander. You know there are 2 new Gacha games releasing soon, Ananta and NTE, and yeah, they look cool but they feel like if they were spin-off or sequels of ZZZ not only how the characters look but also how the whole aesthetic is. They are not copying ZZZ since they were in development before ZZZ release, but you get what I mean. Playing safe for a long time will not end well because it's losing money over the same audience all over again. What if the audience changes their minds? What if there are not as much people that used to play these games as before? And what if they try to make a genuine feedback about the game and yet they don't accept it? I think doing this is genshin or HSR is genuinely a horrible idea. Like i can understand HI3 not having males. That's how the game started, That's how it was for years, and even if i wish i could play as Kevin or Otto, i won't judge. Same thing for ZZZ. The game has the coolest and most unique looking male characters in any hoyo game imo, but the target audience for the game has been very clear to everyone from before it even released. It's a combat game with a lot of fanservice MOSTLY aimed at men. So i expect them to only drop 2 or 3 males per version and won't really cry about it. On the other hand both Genshin and HSR have a waaay bigger female audience. And a more even ratio of male/female characters. Changing this is basically betraying your core audience. This is a dumb move clearly.

Mind you, 6/10 of the top selling characters of 2024 in JP were all men and tbe stats were likely similar in other regions too. Men DO sell well in genshin due to its mixed fanbase and non-gooner audience (or atleast not the majority). Hoyo really should be releasing more men.

Can I just add that men Do sell…. isn’t love and deepspace outselling Genshin in gacha sales? There’s a giant market out there. I started playing Genshin because of Zhongli. After a haitus I started playing again just because of Wriothesley and Neuvillette… And after another hiatus I started playing to save for Kinich…. and it’s not like MHY doesn’t understand the husbando makrket bc even tho the Female to Male ratio in Star Rail is bigger, they’re still coming out with really cool male characters. The new planet will have at least 4 and guess who’s saving up their money for HSR instead of Genshin :/

The “male characters don’t sell” argument is so stupid and incorrect. Take a look at the numbers. Love and Deepspace, an otome game has surpassed even Genshin in sales in 2024. I can even attest to that because i have been playing genshin as an f2p for 3 years now and somehow Love and Deepspace managed to get me to spend money on it after only months of playing lol. I even started to focus more on HSR and spent on it because the upcoming Amphoreus updates have 3 new cool male characters. Male characters DO sell, the truth is in the numbers.
They managed to surpass genshin maybe in like a month or smth, I doubt that that's possible in overall banners.. also more sales doesn't equate anything, some games are simply designed for spenders, look at Fgo for example.. I have never spent a dollar on any game in my life, but fgo's gacha system is so shit that it basically forced me to spend if I wanted to get the character I wanted because of how hard it is to reach pity in that game, FGO has surpassed Genshin in sales quite often despite having a smaller player number by a lot.. genshin is just way more f2p friendly, I started playing in 2020 and I have all the characters that I want, and even their signature weapons, genshin is just that easy when it comes to getting primos consistently

It's all about appeasing the CN audience. That's just how it is. Regardless of how financially sound releasing more male characters is, if the CN playerbase isn't onboard with it, then Hoyo won't oblige. Applies to most other gacha games made in CN actually.
Yes male character sells, i am woman and it’s really hard to find a good game with hot men. I play love and deepspace and i spend a lot of money in. Why ? Because it’s a game with a female mc, with hot men, and you can fight. It’s so rare to find a game where you can fight for women. I played genshin, but stopped because waifus is not my cup of tea.

Also people don't just pull for characters that they're atracted to, there's a bunch of reasons for liking a character, i don't fell attracted to any characters so i mainly pull for the ones i like story-wise or for gameplay. If they think male characters don't sell enough (which is factualy not true but whatever), they should put more effort in their story and kit, literally every archon quest the characters with the most screentime are always women, and even as a woman myself, it just feels weird, it would be understandable if Teyvat was just lacking on male population, but why are the men so absent, i work in a female-dominated field and the feeling is completely different, because the few men that are there actually do something. And it feels like sometimes a male character that is important to the main story ends up being a 4 star (Kaeya, Thoma, Ororon), like can't Hoyo just give both genders the same treatment?

Take example for Diluc, in lore, he was said to be able to beat an army of Fatui, The Harbringer even calling him a real threat. In reality he was getting powercreep by Hu Tao, who canonically is the weakest character in story.

I started playing for Xiao, first and foremost, and stayed because the worldbuilding felt incredibly realistic, socially speaking. There were both guys and girls, there was diversity and, unlike most open world games, Genshin never felt empty and never made me feel like I was actually alone on the server, even if I was. But now that they're just releasing characters for fanservice, only catering to a certain demographic of their playerbase and completely neglecting the rest, it doesn't feel as realistic anymore. I would've defended genshin to hell and back when I started playing, the game was so well made. It's too bad they've ruined it. Now it's just like all the other basic gacha games, and I'm truly saddened to say that.

For now female characters can show interest in other male characters (as fangirls, but still), you have both male and female characters being written as characters rather than generic stereotypical fanservice, and, still for now, the devs promised to release more male characters in the future.

really? zzz is my first hoyo game so i may be completely wrong here. i'm a male liker so it might just be because i'm not paying much attention, but while yeah there are some big chests, nicole, burnice and the one cop character feel like the only ones that are pronounced enough to be pandering. Slight correction about 404's info: it's not that they think male characters are making people quit/not join the game. It's that they pivoted to appeal to a HI3 audience (incels) as a reaction to the shrinkage in the gacha market. I guess they think that if they appeal heavily to the incels it will make up for the fewer new players by creating more whales. I kind of wonder if Da Wei's increasing influence on Genshin led to this...but I dunno. It's happening in all their games. ZZZ needs no explanation, Genshin only having Kinich in 2024, HSR went from 6 > 4 > 3 limited men from 1.X to 3.X. Perhaps this is a company-wide shift. :/ In the words of 404, if they wanna cater to incels, then those incels can fund their games. I won't be spending anymore and I won't be playing any new games Hoyo releases.
I don't think it's a good idea to focus on a saturated market. Let's be honest Hoyos female designs are nowhere near the level of let's say Nikke. They will never beat them at their own game. Genshin's strength has always been the open world and creating likable characters. But the Natlan characters had zero appeal so far when it comes to personality.
It just feels like they’re trying really really hard to cater to the male gaze. Especially some of these recent designs. Which, okay, fine, fair enough, a lot of their audience are men who are interested in hot female character designs, but the rest of us are just out here with crumbs. I’m in shambles. Last time I felt true passion to save and pull a character was Neuvillette.

In china, those players will go crazy if male characters added too much they will go crazy and even send assassins to hoyo devs. Example: Wanderer got a lot hates in china and they could report to their government, hi3 apho is also example for making male chars
they tried adding ONE PLAYABLE MAN to hi3 and look what happened 😭 part 2 was meant to change some things up (and there was men before with actual gameplay in the story)
I believe actually the "blame" can be attributed to the loud minority who would completely bash male characters for getting closer with some female characters in certain events. It's baffling. But I don't think they want to receive any more backlash. Think about it. Last time, Scaramouche/Wanderer got "close" to Nahida. Some folks in China literally started unaliving small cats that looked like scarameow and posted online about it in dark web forums or some BS like that. Or how there are [according to them] "no close interactions between traveler and the other female characters" and yet other male characters do have closer interactions [when they don't, they sound delusional] Or even hell, most recently, people once again bashed Wanderer for getting close to and having more "screen time" than say Navia or Nilou in the recent summer event! 💀 I believe that this is just hoyos' response to this kind of "extremist" backlash. It bloody sucks. But I don't want to necessarily 100% blame hoyo for that when there can definitely be other unconsidered variables involved and not mentioned. ETA: I don't even like Scaramouche/Wanderer [I find his ahh annoying asf] but if there are extremists like that, damn well I know most people want to comply or compromise before sh*t hits the fan even harder.
Although if anything, pandering to such folks will only empower those psychopaths and invite more of them to join/ normalize deranged behaviors 🕴 it's fucked up from hoyoverse's side too
the sad thing is that you’re right. it’s understandable why they would cater to that audience more, in a vain attempt to “receive less backlash”. if only they were aware by them giving that extremist audience more power, they will only have more consequences to face in the future. it’s practically no longer hoyo’s game if they’re going to let THAT audience take the wheel and continue shaping it to their liking.
I sincerely don't get how a game company refuses to acknowledge that the GAMEPLAY is a fundamental part for the sales related to a character. Some people pulled Kazuha because they liked the character since his model was leaked (me, hi). A lot of other people pulled for him because he's fun to play and because he's been the top tier support for years. Like, how can you NOT notice??
This decision seems purely profit driven, and I feel like it's making the game (and especially the character pool) extremely stale and boring. I'm a day 1 player and I've never been less invested in the game's characters. I've barely played since 5.0, I haven't pulled for a single character since. Literally the only one I was looking forward to in this version was Capitano, and look how that turned out. It's not because I'm a husbando only puller or whatever; some of my favorite characters in the game are female, but it feels like the girls being released lately have no personality either. Generic cute flawless waifu #72. I feel like Genshin's character designs, and writing especially, have really gone downhill recently. Seems like it's out of desperation because they're losing sales and players, so they go the safe route with the waifus that whales will always pull for based on design alone.
I like this take, it makes the most sense to me 🤔 Fontaine was like the last arc I actually enjoyed and knew in my gut that that was the last time I'd truly enjoy the game. (Too much grind, Fontaine and Sumeru writing was peak, how to top that [although I can't judge natlan since I haven't truly given it time and quit before it got deep into the natlan story]). I guess finally having open world gacha competition has scared them 🤷♀️
This is exactly what I posted on the Hoyo Lab website last week. Natlan is boring as F because all the characters (who are coincidentally all cute females) sound and look the same. They blend together whenever they are in a group, to the point I forget who said what. The only upside is that I only listen to one of them yap about being a warrior and saving Natlan before I happily skip the rest.

Nathan's lack of 5 star male is really disappointing. Xbalanque had great potential, I'm sure, a fiery pyro dragon sovereign character alongside Mavika. Male characters sell pretty well, too, and Genshin can craft excellent male characters, too, in terms of design, story, and gameplay. They're just too focused on females with lots of revealing skin when even star rail's female designs have more covered, majestic gowns and dresses. I hate this new Genshin, feels like cheap tact bait. Star rail even has awesome male characters that do just as well as their counterparts. Genshin, unfortunately, has let me down.
Star Rail also has a problem with female designs. I can say it... but not at the level of Genshin (Mavuika's design is the biggest disappointment I've ever had) but, in penacony at least the vast majority of male characters they released ended up being Meta, which in Genshin in recent times only happened with Kinich...
And who the hell said that male characters aren't that popular like people in china literally ranted a huge mall just to celebrate neuvillette's birthday, and all the billboards in that area featured neuvi, neuvi themed cafe was opened. For real. For Fontaine I was locked in, I was invested in every character, fangirling for every character that showed up, and I was immediately playing the archon quest the second it updated. Like right on the dot i set an alarm for when the update was finished so I could play the quest. I was so invested in the story, participating and learning theories and lore for the entirety of the main Fontaine quest.
But when the natlan update dropped, everything was kinda meh. The trailer itself dashed everything I was hoping natlan would be. I played act 1 and 2 of the quest and haven’t seen the rest since. It was boring and I didn’t feel the same interest and high I did when playing Fontaine.
Like I was even locked in during the so called boring fortress of meropide act. I actually liked it. But the natlan quest felt so…small? The way everything was treated while the story SAYS is a big deal, the stuff happening felt so small. But fontaines court drama was actually engaging, the natlan arena fight was kinda meh. The only thing I liked about the act 1 and 2 was kinich and he didn’t get much screen time so I got bored. When capitano showed up I got interested again but then it was only for like 2 mins.
Mavuika herself as an archon and character was…kinda boring imo. Furina’s backstory and behaviour was compelling, nahida was creepy but endearingly comical, Raiden was intimidating and terrifying, Zhongli is mysterious and knowledgeable, venti is whimsical and also mysterious. But mavuika…
Maybe I’m judging her even tho I’ve only done act 1 and 2. But even during act 1 and 2 of Fontaine I felt more emotion towards furina than I do towards mavuika. That emotion might have been annoyance but at least it was not complete apathy.
Also, I just have to say that I abhor mavuika’s design. Every other archon’s clothing made sense but mavuika’s makes zero sense. It isn’t even nice to look at. Just a black bodysuit. Genshin is a fantasy game, why is there a bodysuit??? She lives in NATLAN??? It’s HOT??? I understand she’s maybe based off of maori bikers, but even mythology wise it makes zero sense. It’s so random😭😭. Any symbolism in her outfit is only like maybe 5% of what she’s wearing, it’s only the literal symbols on her outfit that make references to mythology. Her silhouette itself is flat, she has no layers that gives her clothing texture other than those symbols carved into the suit. It’s entirely black with some red and gold accent, and some skin showing. It’s so fanservicey.
Zhongli’s outfit screamed china, venti’s was very obviously medieval Germany, furina was so french, raiden’s was obviously Japanese, nahida was very Indian. But mavuika doesn’t have that same special spark that the other archons had. Who looks at her outfit and thinks “ahh Latin America”.
Not even her skin looks Latin American😭😭. Natlan playable characters mostly being white makes zero sense considering how white ppl in Latin America, Africa, and Phillipines is such a small amount in comparison to the tanned skinned ppl in those countries. When my white passing sister and her white friend were in the Phillipines they got so many stares and ppl complimenting them saying they were very beautiful. Ppl in a store would literally go out of their way to gawk at the rare “white” person, that’s how rare seeing a white person is for them.

Genshin is trying to attract more players so I think out of fandom popularity characters might be focused one more since they attract people. I think most people outside the genshin community know wanderer way more than Furina and Nahida. If you point at a picture of Wanderer many people will know him over Furina because he’s older (release wise) and has a possibly bigger fan base. Nahida isn’t that popular outside of genshin, I’ve seen more merch of Hu Tao and Klee than her

This is what baffles me the most. HSR sells male characters like crazy! The only male character that didn't sell as much was Boothill, who was unfortunate to be after Robin and before Firefly! And I know a lot of people are planning on pulling for him on his rerun in 3.0! (heck, I have Boothill (and Robin❤)).
And Genshin has also sold their male characters quite well, so I don't know what they are talking about lol

Been playing Genshin consistently since IT RELEASED. Never felt burn out and played all the time. Ever since Natlan came out...I don't want to play anymore. I loved how in Fontaine we had some of the coolest male characters and such a cool story. We have ALWAYS had way more female characters and now they want it to be even less male characters? If this is true it will actually make me leave the game as someone who has played almost every day since it released. It feels like they don't care as much about the story anymore as well. Hopefully the next area will save it.

The lack of male characters is not only boring and trite but also shows how susceptible Hoyo is to the idea of making even _more_ money than the billions they already have. I may be biased as a female player (Lyney & Alhaitham main lmao) but the lack of male characters is just so…nasty? It exacerbates the issue of Chinese male players being so overly sensitive and aggressive when they don’t get the same cookie-cutter sexualized anime women. It’s not only the lack of male characters-the new female characters they’re releasing feel like they have to be _perfect._ Like Mary Sues. Furina was an amazing female character-and she was amazing without being sexualized and she had FLAWS. The new female characters feel like cardboard. Like they’re not allowed to have or bring in any conflict-inward or outward.

I am more and more convinced that Sumeru and Fontaine were peak of the game. Natlan is... strange. The story, locations and music are good, but the design! Design - is the main problem with Natlan and its characters!

I love the landscape in Natlan but the characters have been such a let down. The only Natlan 5* I pulled was Kinich half for Exploration and half because I wanted to pull on Ajaw tail and throw him around.

I’ve seen a lot of people say “female characters sell more” yada yada, but just look at “love and deepspace”, it’s a gacha game whose characters are all male, yet their revenue (from what I’ve seen) is always near the top, it even has surpassed Genshin on some occasions

that's because games like love and deepspace are specifically marketed towards people who like that kind of stuff with content that appeals to them. genshin is not marketed towards those people and the playerbase still is mostly male you are the minority. go play games marketed towards you.

I'm seeing husbando enjoyers actually thinking about leaving, because they have too many pulls and no banners in Natlan that interest them yet. These leaks about the only confirmed upcoming male character being Ifa (4*) have caused the opposite reaction. Not to mention that Wriothesley holds the curse of being a man AND cryo so he hasn't had a rerun when almost everyone in Fontaine has, some even more than once. Some male 4* who are liked by female players have taken over a year to have reruns, like Kaveh and Heizou. idk what they're thinking, especially when their second biggest market, Japan, adores a lot of male Genshin characters (Kinich is really popular there because of his and Ajaw's VAs.) Even the Chinese incels' worst nightmare, Wanderer, keeps winning popularity polls in weibo.
Personally, despite liking male characters a lot more I pull for characters of all genders, but it's reached a point where I've been getting a lot of accidental 5*s this year trying to get the new boys because, except for Kinich, they've all been 4*! It's even more vile when you think about it because you're not guaranteed, so husbando collectors will end up pulling on a banner forever since they can't get even C0 Ororon. I got 3 early Chascas. While trying to pull Sethos, I got one Nahida and one Dehya. I know, my own fault for building pity, but this hasn't happened to me before this often.

I ABSOLUTELY agree about husbando enjoyers, since I myself have pulled weapon event FOR THE FIRST TIME recently, just because I don't know where else to spend my pulls. The only character I really want to pull is Cyno, but I have most of the other chracters I wanted. I really think that if no new 5* male characters appear, my plan is next:
1) Wait for Cyno
2) Pull for weapons
3) Pull for constellations
4) Pull for any male characters and avoid pulling for female characters on principle
Earlier I wouldn't spend any primogems on weapon or constellations bcs I thought I still have more nice guys to pull for, but THAT'S how bad the situations with guys is. That bad that recently I pulled my first 5* on weapon event, Neuvillette's weapon
@acheba_nitsa I'm actually a C2R1 Cyno main and his weapon is super worth it. If you're going next for him and you're also maining Neuvi, may I suggest trying to get Baizhu from the Liyue banner now if you don't have him already? He might disappear after 5.3 and he's pretty good in teams for both of them. I think he's a better investment for a future Cyno than his cons
As a woman... I want to play with men. Like, I love female characters, but it's too much, I like playing with handsome men. Neuvillette and Kazuha are my favorites, not just because of their looks, but also because of their personalities. This update left me disappointed, I liked Kinich, but Ororon is just... weird. Not to mention they overdid it with the female fanservice. I just want more tall, strong men to play with 😔
I thought Ororon was a bit odd at first too. They made him pretty dubious especially with the whole "betraying natlan" thing they did with him. I also didn't like how Citlali treated him when they were shown together. I think if they gave him like a hangout where you get to see more about him being a gardener/aphid enthusiast, he might not be so bad. Unfortunately Natlan was more about NPCs than any other region, and it made very short and incomplete impressions of the actual playable characters.
yeah i did not like ororon at all he just felt lazy in design and compared to designs in the past i disliked initially i had great difficulty getting used to his and still find it gacha oc ish/all over the place. like they threw him together quick like ok heres ur damn regional tall male now shutup
My problem with Ororon is not his personality, it's his appearance for reasons of: he looks like a member of a 2010 band from Brazil called Restart.... I just can't take the boy seriously.

It never was 1:1 male & female before. I joined during the first year and it was clear the overall female ratio was favored and had 3 females to every 1 male. Sumeru was the exception and had quite a lot on the male focus. Then it just became less and less. I was happier when Genshin wasn’t so heavily waifu-baiting it’s audience. I guess I’ll let my 300+ wishes rot for a while.
I saved almost 500 pulls because of that. I pulled for Mavuika, because she's the Archon (I'm Archon collector) and I liked her character, and her weapon. Now I have about 300 wishes left and 100% guarantee (tried to get c1 Mavuika, but got Diluc instead). Maybe, I'll pull for Ifa (if he's a 5*), but that's it for Natlan characters for me. Now I'm saving for Snezhnaya and rerans of characters I already own and their weapons. If Hoyo don't want my money, I'm not going to spend it and it's more money for me I can leave in my pocket. :3

Because they primarily cater to the CN audience first and foremost. If CN says more females, then Hoyo is gonna oblige, regardless of the thoughts of the global playerbase. That's pretty much any gacha in general though. It's just being a lot more noticeable in GI recently.

@@FiOsiris according to the sensor tower monthly revenue report from oct. 2024, which is estimates for mobile-platforms only, HSR is making enough money that they are only one place below genshin impact, and both are in the top 5 of the chart. a corporation that spends a high budget on honkai star rail is not going to consider the game 'stupid' when it is making just as much money as their main cash cow game. HSR has just as much sex appeal as genshin with its design of women and men. the only difference is genshin is just not bothering to make men anymore, even though aventurine's release in HSR has proved that male characters can be extremely profitable. it seems you're just projecting your opinion, but it'd be very different from how a corporation views the situation. if you're bad at turn-based games, the game actually has an auto-battle feature if you'd like to try it sometime. it might improve your experience significantly.

They have basically proven 404 right with the last live stream. In the silhouette teaser, everyone to the left of skirk is theorized to be a 4* (Iansan, Dahlia, Ifa) and everyone to the right of Skirk including Skirk herself would be 5*. They said so themselves they want to return to their roots, which is waifu games like HI3 and GGZ. Everyone else was just a nice bump of cash along the way to put Genshin into mainstream, but now that they don't need the publicity/growth anymore they are showing their 'true' colors.
Oh I also forgot their "we only listen to the real travelers" comment. It's pretty clear they think male Otaku are the real travelers and female players, "normies" and gays are not. This all despite the fact that Genshin only reached its current levels of popularity because of these players.

@@ErisNoir Tbh I still enjoyed the game in Fontaine and probably would've also defended them back then. But you can feel the shift towards the end of Fontaine/4.8 Summer and then more so as we go into Natlan. It's not just the ratio of characters either, its the world immersion, character designs, and impact to the story that comes along with the further skewed ratios.
I'm also not a fan of the Nightsoul mechanic and how its more impactful to the meta than pneuma-ousia was, not even touching on powercreep and how crazy some constellations like Xilonen's are. I genuinely don't want to pull for that many Natlan characters, but skipping them inconveniences me not just in abyss but also overworld exploration becomes more cumbersome if you're a "have-not" (on my account every region 100% except for Natlan atm)
Back in Fontaine if someone had told me that they wanted to scale down male characters further I would've said "Nah, this is probably the sweet spot between appeasing the CN ifmalenoplay players but also not making the game a generic waifu gacha either, they won't change the formula too dramatically" but after the change over from Cai Haoyu to Da Wei somehow the situation has further degraded beyond my expectations...

I dont remember why i started genshin but the more i got into it, the more i becane attached to Xiao and Xingqiu. Im so happy i pulled kinich. Yes he lacks a lot in the main story and even his tribe quest, but i love him
I'm a girl and I've started playing Genshin couple of months after the release because I saw Zhongli everywhere. And since then, I've never took a break because I simply had fun. But man, I've been so frustrated since Natlan release and I think Citlali and Mizuki are my last straw. Don't get me wrong, I love female characters as well and I don't mind my ladies being sexy but the type of fanservice that's in the game lately is different and leaves bad taste in my mouth. The omissions of male characters on top of that plus the underutilisation of the existing male characters just pisses me off. If something doesn't change soon, then I will be saying bye bye to this game and focus just on HSR.

The "male characters dont sell" argument is redundant. Male banners did sell and some were popular af and brought a lot of money in (for example scaramouche). Plus banner sales arent the only source of money. Merch is one example and male characters merch is POPULAR (scaramouche merch sells out quickly.) If genshin had no male characters, many many people would never even have given it a chance, because anime waifu gacha never had a great reputation and less players means less income. Pure waifu banners hurt the game as we all can see: the banner sell HALF of what they sold last year, many players are leaving the game and the remaining waifu lovers get drained. There is way less cosplayers or fanart/work about natlan characters which is usually free promo for hoyo which shouldnt be overlooked either. Things have changed for worse. Variety and the option to choose are always better than just deleting a fundamental part of the game without any explanations and alienating every player thats not a "waifu only" player. From a business standpoint it doesnt make sense how hoyo handled genshin the last year and from a players perspective its incredibly frustrating, especially if you loved this game dearly.

Of course it’s frustrating ! I stayed through the game because I desperately wanted to get Zhongli, and I keep staying because I want three male 4* characters. I don’t have problem with female characters, but having the majority of time ONLY female characters dropping is getting incredibly boring and definitely not exciting at all.
Another reason why male characters generate less money than females is that Genshin always had an unbalanced male to female ratio and the people who wanted the male characters often saved their primos for their banners so they didn't have to spend a lot of money. Baizhu, for example, was one of the worst banners money-wise because everyone who wanted him had ages to save up for him, so they did. Also, a lot of male banners just had terrible timing - like Wriothesley, who was released between an Archon and the much more anticipated other tall male of Fontaine, there was no way he was ever going to make a lot of money.
@@Argendrieland also kits. Fortunately we have strong males, but some of them are mediocre, that in a little roster hurts heavier compared females.
Wriothesley C0 is objectively the weakest dps 5* in Fontaine, and obviously they put him before the Archon. Cyno ended up dissapointing for the community, 2.X males are A-tier at the best.
Baizhu is really good instead, probably fews players needed his role + his banner placement.
I don't saying to make all the meta, but if you are interested to sell them, try to make more appealing males gameplay-wise
This is just.... weird. Zhongli, four years after his release, is still one of the most popular characters in their biggest playerbase: China and Japan. Consistently with their other games too, male characters in ZZZ (recent release of Harumasa Asaba and Lighter), male characters in HSR (with Jingyuan being the ONLY character that has ever broke their top up servers because people are whaling TOO DAMN HARD FOR HIM ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE BANNER) the male characters always sells. And not only sells, they sell WELL. Because inherently, if it's female characters people want..... they don't have to play genshin lol. There are more pervy, gooner baity games out there that caters to them. And right now, with how genshin designs their female characters to be "u - uwu twaveler!" it isn't even looking great for the female character enjoyers.

My guess is that they never intended to make things equal. They released a lot of male characters at the beginning to become mainstream, but I don’t think that was a long term goal. After all, they’re a group of otakus who have always liked the same type of anime girl.
At this point players who enjoy to play with male characters have two options, quit the game, or accept the change and wait for the sporadic male character release.
It’s kind of sad because Genshin had a lot of potential for uniqueness. I really like their male characters.

Remember how we got 1600 primos for free at 5.0 because Hoyo had to revert a "fix" they did on Neuvilette that made him weaker and not able to do the "spin to win" anymore? They were certainly doing that to push sales for Mualani.
I think this could have to do with the change on the devs leadership, with Da Wei taking over from Cai Haoyu. This brought many good things for gameplay, UI, general QoL, but maybe also did this to character design and writting.

I think that all comution in China to make Ororon a 5 star should have been enough proof that male characters are profitable. So I really don't understand Genshin decision on that. I feel like theres that reason why we dont see a little boy playable model, all the childe characters we have playable are little girl models, i see this as a way to market towards creeps, yes there are creeps out there who like little boys but its quite strange we never had a playable child boy. This is the actual reason of why I have a problem with asian games in general. They generally don't think about audiences as a variety of people who share same interests but only a certain group of people that shares certain interests and traits of personality. And it might be profitable for them but that is very limiting for their creativity and the players options for a character. The same thing is happening in ZZZ, during the first release we got interesting male character designs: Lycaon, Ben, Billy Kid and Anthon. And yes there were still more female characters but the male characters attracted so much attention and they are some of the most popular characters in that game. But now we got more bland anime female characters and the only few male characters that we got in the new update are also bland as heck too. Especially Harumasa, gosh his design is so.... It just doesn't have any taste. The only exception is Lighter more or less.

Hoyoverse and other gacha game companies are playing safe and while it might be profitable now when you overuse the same formula all over again it just get tiring and as we saw with other companies you know that won't work in a few years or maybe months. Game developers need to challenge themselves and try to make at least something different. People love different things when done well, and that's why you need feedback from all your audience, not only the ones you want to pander. You know there are 2 new Gacha games releasing soon, Ananta and NTE, and yeah, they look cool but they feel like if they were spin-off or sequels of ZZZ not only how the characters look but also how the whole aesthetic is. They are not copying ZZZ since they were in development before ZZZ release, but you get what I mean. Playing safe for a long time will not end well because it's losing money over the same audience all over again. What if the audience changes their minds? What if there are not as much people that used to play these games as before? And what if they try to make a genuine feedback about the game and yet they don't accept it? I think doing this is genshin or HSR is genuinely a horrible idea. Like i can understand HI3 not having males. That's how the game started, That's how it was for years, and even if i wish i could play as Kevin or Otto, i won't judge. Same thing for ZZZ. The game has the coolest and most unique looking male characters in any hoyo game imo, but the target audience for the game has been very clear to everyone from before it even released. It's a combat game with a lot of fanservice MOSTLY aimed at men. So i expect them to only drop 2 or 3 males per version and won't really cry about it. On the other hand both Genshin and HSR have a waaay bigger female audience. And a more even ratio of male/female characters. Changing this is basically betraying your core audience. This is a dumb move clearly.

I started playing Genshin because of Zhongli. After a haitus I started playing again just because of Wriothesley and Neuvillette… And after another hiatus I started playing to save for Kinich…. and it’s not like MHY doesn’t understand the husbando makrket bc even tho the Female to Male ratio in Star Rail is bigger, they’re still coming out with really cool male characters. The new planet will have at least 4 and guess who’s saving up their money for HSR instead of Genshin :/

The “male characters don’t sell” argument is so stupid and incorrect. Take a look at the numbers. Love and Deepspace, an otome game has surpassed even Genshin in sales in 2024. I can even attest to that because i have been playing genshin as an f2p for 3 years now and somehow Love and Deepspace managed to get me to spend money on it after only months of playing lol. I even started to focus more on HSR and spent on it because the upcoming Amphoreus updates have 3 new cool male characters.

I have never spent a dollar on any game in my life, but fgo's gacha system is so shit that it basically forced me to spend if I wanted to get the character I wanted because of how hard it is to reach pity in that game, FGO has surpassed Genshin in sales quite often despite having a smaller player number by a lot.. genshin is just way more f2p friendly, I started playing in 2020 and I have all the characters that I want, and even their signature weapons, genshin is just that easy when it comes to getting primos consistently

Yes male character sells, i am woman and it’s really hard to find a good game with hot men. I play love and deepspace and i spend a lot of money in. Why ? Because it’s a game with a female mc, with hot men, and you can fight. It’s so rare to find a game where you can fight for women. I played genshin, but stopped because waifus is not my cup of tea.

Also people don't just pull for characters that they're atracted to, there's a bunch of reasons for liking a character, i don't fell attracted to any characters so i mainly pull for the ones i like story-wise or for gameplay. If they think male characters don't sell enough (which is factualy not true but whatever), they should put more effort in their story and kit, literally every archon quest the characters with the most screentime are always women, and even as a woman myself, it just feels weird, it would be understandable if Teyvat was just lacking on male population, but why are the men so absent, i work in a female-dominated field and the feeling is completely different, because the few men that are there actually do something. And it feels like sometimes a male character that is important to the main story ends up being a 4 star (Kaeya, Thoma, Ororon), like can't Hoyo just give both genders the same treatment?

Take example for Diluc, in lore, he was said to be able to beat an army of Fatui, The Harbringer even calling him a real threat. In reality he was getting powercreep by Hu Tao, who canonically is the weakest character in story.

I started playing for Xiao, first and foremost, and stayed because the worldbuilding felt incredibly realistic, socially speaking. There were both guys and girls, there was diversity and, unlike most open world games, Genshin never felt empty and never made me feel like I was actually alone on the server, even if I was. But now that they're just releasing characters for fanservice, only catering to a certain demographic of their playerbase and completely neglecting the rest, it doesn't feel as realistic anymore. I would've defended genshin to hell and back when I started playing, the game was so well made. It's too bad they've ruined it. Now it's just like all the other basic gacha games, and I'm truly saddened to say that.

Actually releasing less male characters will make female players quit, I quit already and moved to WuWa but even there they started releasing less male characters so I'm also considering quitting this game. If I can't enjoy playing with characters that are visually appealing to me, then I will not play.

I recommend Ash Echoes. For now female characters can show interest in other male characters (as fangirls, but still), you have both male and female characters being written as characters rather than generic stereotypical fanservice, and, still for now, the devs promised to release more male characters in the future.

really? zzz is my first hoyo game so i may be completely wrong here. i'm a male liker so it might just be because i'm not paying much attention, but while yeah there are some big chests, nicole, burnice and the one cop character feel like the only ones that are pronounced enough to be pandering. (i think nicole is debatable because her design communicates about her character traits, as opposed to fanservice for the sake of it)

Slight correction about 404's info: it's not that they think male characters are making people quit/not join the game. It's that they pivoted to appeal to a HI3 audience (incels) as a reaction to the shrinkage in the gacha market. I guess they think that if they appeal heavily to the incels it will make up for the fewer new players by creating more whales.
I kind of wonder if Da Wei's increasing influence on Genshin led to this...but I dunno. It's happening in all their games. ZZZ needs no explanation, Genshin only having Kinich in 2024, HSR went from 6 > 4 > 3 limited men from 1.X to 3.X. Perhaps this is a company-wide shift. :/

I don't think it's a good idea to focus on a saturated market. Let's be honest Hoyos female designs are nowhere near the level of let's say Nikke. They will never beat them at their own game. Genshin's strength has always been the open world and creating likable characters. But the Natlan characters had zero appeal so far when it comes to personality.
It just feels like they’re trying really really hard to cater to the male gaze. Especially some of these recent designs. Which, okay, fine, fair enough, a lot of their audience are men who are interested in hot female character designs, but the rest of us are just out here with crumbs. I’m in shambles. Last time I felt true passion to save and pull a character was Neuvillette.

I believe actually the "blame" can be attributed to the loud minority who would completely bash male characters for getting closer with some female characters in certain events.
It's baffling. But I don't think they want to receive any more backlash.

Last time, Scaramouche/Wanderer got "close" to Nahida. Some folks in China literally started unaliving small cats that looked like scarameow and posted online about it in dark web forums or some BS like that.
Or how there are [according to them] "no close interactions between traveler and the other female characters" and yet other male characters do have closer interactions [when they don't, they sound delusional]
Or even hell, most recently, people once again bashed Wanderer for getting close to and having more "screen time" than say Navia or Nilou in the recent summer event! 💀
I believe that this is just hoyos' response to this kind of "extremist" backlash. It bloody sucks. But I don't want to necessarily 100% blame hoyo for that when there can definitely be other unconsidered variables involved and not mentioned.
ETA: I don't even like Scaramouche/Wanderer [I find his ahh annoying asf] but if there are extremists like that, damn well I know most people want to comply or compromise before sh*t hits the fan even harder.

Some people pulled Kazuha because they liked the character since his model was leaked (me, hi). A lot of other people pulled for him because he's fun to play and because he's been the top tier support for years. Like, how can you NOT notice??
This decision seems purely profit driven, and I feel like it's making the game (and especially the character pool) extremely stale and boring. I'm a day 1 player and I've never been less invested in the game's characters. I've barely played since 5.0, I haven't pulled for a single character since. Literally the only one I was looking forward to in this version was Capitano, and look how that turned out. It's not because I'm a husbando only puller or whatever; some of my favorite characters in the game are female, but it feels like the girls being released lately have no personality either. Generic cute flawless waifu #72.
I feel like Genshin's character designs, and writing especially, have really gone downhill recently. Seems like it's out of desperation because they're losing sales and players, so they go the safe route with the waifus that whales will always pull for based on design alone.
I like this take, it makes the most sense to me 🤔 Fontaine was like the last arc I actually enjoyed and knew in my gut that that was the last time I'd truly enjoy the game. (Too much grind, Fontaine and Sumeru writing was peak, how to top that [although I can't judge natlan since I haven't truly given it time and quit before it got deep into the natlan story]). I guess finally having open world gacha competition has scared them 🤷♀️
This is exactly what I posted on the Hoyo Lab website last week. Natlan is boring as F because all the characters (who are coincidentally all cute females) sound and look the same. They blend together whenever they are in a group, to the point I forget who said what. The only upside is that I only listen to one of them yap about being a warrior and saving Natlan before I happily skip the rest.

Nathan's lack of 5 star male is really disappointing. Xbalanque had great potential, I'm sure, a fiery pyro dragon sovereign character alongside Mavika. Male characters sell pretty well, too, and Genshin can craft excellent male characters, too, in terms of design, story, and gameplay. They're just too focused on females with lots of revealing skin when even star rail's female designs have more covered, majestic gowns and dresses. I hate this new Genshin, feels like cheap tact bait. Star rail even has awesome male characters that do just as well as their counterparts. Genshin, unfortunately, has let me down.
Star Rail also has a problem with female designs. I can say it... but not at the level of Genshin (Mavuika's design is the biggest disappointment I've ever had) but, in penacony at least the vast majority of male characters they released ended up being Meta, which in Genshin in recent times only happened with Kinich...
