    Thanks fellas. As a BYU fan I am ecstatic to be part of the Big 12. Feels like a great fit. After decades of longing for the PAC, I wouldn’t trade the Big 12 membership for the PAC for all the root beer in the world.

    Great episode. Steve Young was QB at BYU in 1983. The 1984 National Championship team was quarterbacked by Robbie Bosco

    • @hkpew
      @hkpew 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, not many people outside of the BYU community remember Robbie Bosco because he was never more than a backup in the NFL and may never have played a down there. I think he may have been the greatest QB BYU ever produced. He won the national championship in his Junior year, and he was absolutely amazing. Early in the year he made me nervous with all the throws he made into tight coverage, but he was so accurate on those that eventually I just accepted that he knew what he was doing. Unfortunately he was injured pretty badly early in his Senior year. The relatively high level at which he was able to play for the remainder of that season despite having an arm strength not much better than mine is amazing. Seriously, he couldn't throw deep at all anymore and even his mid length passes were high arching wounded ducks. It was amazing that he was able to complete anything in that range, but he did so fairly consistently due to his high passing IQ (and also having good receivers who could get wide open and fight for the ball when necessary). A more ordinary QB would have had a ton of interceptions without being able to throw better than that. I don't believe he ever fully recovered, or he would have been a star in the NFL.

    Gentlemen, just a heads-up responding to one of your points regarding BYU funding. Although the school is run and operated by the LDS Church, the athletic department does not receive any funding from the church. They are required to be totally self sufficient. They can not build a new facility until it is fully paid for as well as set up to maintain it into perpetuity. How many schools can say that?

One note - while Steve Young led BYU to the first 11 games of the winning streak from 1983 to 1985, he graduated and it was Robbie Bosco that QBed the 1984 national championship team. Bosco was a tremendous big game QB, he led upsets of #3 Pitt in 1984, #4 Air Force in 1985 and 1985 wins over 1984 top 5 teams Washington and Boston College. And the national championship win over Michigan.

    Hey guys, I've thoroughly enjoyed your pod casts! I will turn 69 in 12 days and I was a freshman at BYU in 1973. The first football game I went to in Provo was kind of like a glorified high school game, lol. The stadium was smaller and everyone was just walking around the base of the stadium seats looking to meet someone to date. That changed quickly when all of a sudden BYU started turning heads towards the football field with this amazing quarterback named Gary Sheide! I went to Mt. Diablo High School in Concord, CA and Gary had played at Antioch High School, one of Mt. Diablo's biggest rivals. I suddenly became BYU's biggest football fan! Just walking around the BYU campus over the years, I saw so many well known BYU football players in class, walking to class, etc! One day, I was at the bank behind some guy getting cash out of the ATM. He turned around and it was Steve Young. He said hi and then proceeded to get into his old beat up car. My cousin was Ty Detmer's roommate and got me a autographed football with the entire team's signatures. By the way, my cousin is Eric Mortensen who returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown against Utah State! My wife and I ran into Robbie Bosco at the grocery store. My wife and I moved into a home in the hills and Cary Whittingham and his brothers would play basketball on the court in the back yard. It was the same neighborhood that Lavell Edwards and his wife lived in. Sorry to ramble, but I agree with you guys, BYU was definitely a smart choice to be asked to join the Big 12. We may not win too many games right off, but that will change, I promise you! Baylor is a great school that I have always admired and I've loved every football game BYU has had with the Bears. By the way guys, BYU and Baylor are 2 and 2 against each other in football, so we're kind of starting off with a clean slate! Can't wait for the next time BYU and Baylor meet!

      This is something I've told people before, but not because BYU, of itself, is the difference-maker, but rather that the Pac-10 leadership's decision to do away with decades of history as a conference with state or regional rivalries across the board may ultimately have been the difference in the Pac-12 not being of sufficient interest nationally to keep USC involved. Let's say that Nevada (UNR) and UNLV were two strong sports schools. They then would have been the next natural candidates to invite, as had been Arizona and Arizona State to expand from the Pac-8. Since that wasn't the case, the next logical choices would have been Utah and BYU; Colorado geographically would seriously be stretching the idea of a "Pacific" conference. Yes, the idea to invite Texas and Oklahoma (plus coattails) was a bold attempt, but lacked a viable backup plan, especially after they chose to invite Colorado as a standalone to prevent the Texas Legislature from packaging religious school Baylor with the other Texas schools. With Colorado immediately accepting, the Pac leadership painted themselves into a corner that would have only been resolved with UT and OU accepting. They didn't, and the Pac went to their consolation prize of... Utah.
      The funny thing is, Utah kept getting better, and finally good enough to win the whole conference when traditional leaders USC, Oregon, and Washington were off their games--remember, Utah, who lost to Oregon, doesn't even get in to the conference championship game this year if Oregon can manage to beat Oregon State.
      But Colorado barely made a blip on the radar since the time they were invited. There was never any real rivalry between them and Utah; a comparison of Utah fans on BYU discussions versus those of Colorado readily bears that out. And the conference has been in a malaise for years.
      But imagine if BYU were there instead of Colorado. BYU, who beat its share of P5 teams during its independent years, certainly would have been able to compete at a much higher level than Colorado did with the same access to all of the money and recruiting advantages that goes with Pac-12 membership. And, heaven forbid that BYU actually competed for a conference title as Utah did; I think that would have lit a competitive fire under the leadership of the schools that were so adamantly against a religious school being in the conference. The point is that with two very competitive programs who were also bitter rivals being in the Pac-12, the conference would have been in a far better place from a network contract standpoint, and USC likely wouldn't have done the unthinkable to jump to a conference mostly in the eastern half of the country.

  • @cts7648
    @cts7648 ปีที่แล้ว +66

    BYU did knock on the pac12 door and was denied. The pac12 didn't want religious schools in their conference and chalked it up to "academics" even though BYU is stronger than Utah in that regard.

    • @DKWalser
      @DKWalser ปีที่แล้ว +17

      In fairness, Utah has a medical school. BYU does not. Each year, Utah receives more dollars in research grants than does BYU (and, therefore, publishes more academic papers than does BYU). From that perspective, Utah can be viewed as having better academics than BYU. However, BYU's incoming freshman class has better test scores and better grades than does the U's freshman class. From that perspective, BYU can be seen as more academic. It's certainly tougher to get into.
      Having said that, Chris is correct: BYU was rejected by the PAC12 because the rest of the schools didn't want a religious institution (particularly one that acts like a religious institution) to join their ranks. Pointing to BYU's lack of academics was just a fig leaf.

    • @sgsheff
      @sgsheff ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Let's be honest BYU has a history of beating most of the PAC 12 teams anyway. It was only 2 or 3 seasons ago when BYU beat a significant number of Pac12 teams in a single season to the point that they should have been named Pac12 champions.

    • @aleniafuvai
      @aleniafuvai ปีที่แล้ว +4

    • @sgsheff
      @sgsheff ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@aleniafuvai that's absolutely not true. Within the last 5-10 years BYU has beaten more Pac12 teams than have beaten BYU. Lavell stopped coaching over two decades ago. The Pac12 simply isn't that great of a conference anymore. USC and Oregon aren't what they used to be and USC is only getting better again because they got a great Big 12 coach and some of his star players. The Pac12 is the worst of the power 5 conferences and gets destroyed in bowl games every year by other conferences. BYU has done well against p 5 conference teams under the current coaching staff and regularly has had some of the most difficult schedules in the country. Most Pac12 teams have some of the weakest schedules in the country. BYU is consistently looking for more difficult competition to play against year over year win or lose while the Pac12 seems to do the exact opposite with its teams. Not to mention the fact that the Pac12 requires Pac12 refs to do any game played against a team from a different conference and everyone knows that the Pac12 refs are the worst in the country with crazy blunders. The trajectory of the Pac12 just doesn't look good right now and everyone can see it. The fact that CU is the program in the conference with the most excitement and hype around it is embarrassing.

      @@aleniafuvai....... Why do you make claims you know are false? Where is the illustrious past of Utah? What does Utah offer any conference?
      BYU controls the state of Utah so there is no need for Utah. When has Utah ever brought value to the pac the way BYU brings value to the Big 12?
      Utah was dead in the water until the Olympics came along and money was funneled directly into the University to save it from bankruptcy....... you can thank Mitt Romney for that.

    Great podcast! Soooo excited to be a part of the Big 12 officially! One minor pushback I would give is the "level of competition" argument for the Directors Cup. BYU plays in the most competitive "leagues" for non-tv sports that you can find and regularly win/compete (Volleyball, Track and Field, Golf, etc.).
    It is true, BYU basketball and baseball have taken a step back in the WCC, (I would argue that the MWC was better for both of those sports) and BYU has been hit-and-miss in independence in football. Those programs should surge again to national prominence with the **large** recruiting bump BYU is getting from Big 12 membership and real-deal P5 status.
    And the 26-27 year old argument is so old, and so tired at this point. In the "one-and-done" world that we live in, taking two years off from your sport creates serious disadvantages to your body and training versus the admitted benefit of having a mind that is two years older. If it was such an advantage, every other college would do it. LDS talent would get a premium boost to recruitment, which they don't, and unestablished schools would want their kids to perform service missions to bulk them up and build them up to competition levels, which they don't.

      Yep, in most cases, missionaries are limited to one day a week (Preparation Day) where they're able to work out.
      Most missionaries return underweight and out of shape. BYU coaches and staff have seen returning missionaries get hurt at a higher rate, which is one reason they prefer to grayshirt incoming returned missionaries.

BYU has been National Champions in the following sports: Football, Men's and Women's Volley Ball (multiple times), Women's Soccer (at least twice), Men and Women's Cross Country. They have been ranked in Softball and Gymnastics. They are very competitive in golf and tennis. As for club sports, they have the best Men and Women's Rugby Teams in the Nation. An excellent Lacrosse team.
    As for peripheral support, their dance team has been National Champions for many years, just watch when they go out on the field. When we were playing basketball in the West Coast Conference, there were usually more BYU fans than home team fans. It was fun to hear the crowd roar when the visitors scored and a smattering of applause when the home team scored.
    Thank you so much for your comments on BYU. I think I speak for most of the fans when I say we are looking forward to playing Baylor. I think it has already become a great rivalry. Please come up to Provo. You will find great hospitality and loud rabid fans who will compliment you when your team does well. We love playing tough opponents. Oh yeah, you have to get a Cougar Trail. It's a 24" maple bar.
    One more thing, their student section, the ROC or Roar Of Cougars, is one of the best in the nation.

    Point of clarification. The average age of the roster at BYU is only a small amount older than usual. Returned missionaries spending 4 years in school will generally graduate at 24 yrs old instead of 22, but there are many non-missionaries on the squad, reducing the average age more than one might expect. So, yes, BYU is generally older but not by a whole lot. I think the biggest advantage age-wise is along the lines. For "skill" players, going on a mission can be a huge detriment, although training techniques have improved over the years to help athletes get their strength and speed back.

  • @jt4jt4
    @jt4jt4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Yeah... the part about age--the thing is, if they're really good, guess what they do? Like junior QB Jaren Hall, they declare early for the NFL draft, because they know that going on a mission also shortens their pro careers by two years. And, as far as BYU's storied history of starting quarterbacks goes, they didn't have a successful starting quarterback who was a returned missionary until the 2000-2001 season (well after anyone that you named including Detmer and Sarkisian). There aren't many top wide receivers at BYU who are RM's (returned missionaries), and it's really difficult to name a running back who was; BYU's best ever, Doak Walker Award winner Luke Staley, didn't go on a mission either. Neither did star NFL linebackers Kyle Van Noy and Fred Warner. Where missions might be an advantage is on the offensive line, but, there again, if they're really good, they want to maximize the time they can play professionally, as did John Tait, who was the 14th pick in the 1999 draft as a junior when it was far less common to declare early.

    Lets get the facts straight here.
    The 2021 PAC-12 football season was the most embarrassing result that a P5 conference has ever had.
    They had a losing record vs G-5 teams 13-15
    They went 0-7 vs BYU and Notre Dame
    Lost 2 games to division 2 schools.
    And had a losing record to MWC teams.
    Also went 2-6 in Bowl games.
    Oregon beat Ohio State on the road in week 2......which "puffed" up the ducks national ranking early in the season.
    Ohio State would go on to lose only one more game against Michigan in the final game of the season....which in essence would keep them out of the CFP and to the Rose Bowl.
    Oregon subsequently lost to a horrible Stanford team a few weeks after beating the buckeyes, but never lost too high of a ranking.
    Utah had lost to BYU, Oregon State, and San Diego State early in the season before getting hot and besting the Ducks 2 times to even make it to the Rose Bowl.
    FYI....The Ducks would go on to get smoked by OU in the Alamo bowl after their PAC12 meltdown.
    With Cincinnati undefeated, and having beaten Notre Dame the CFP was hoping the bearcats would slip up, and lose in the AAC championship game so that the could potentially pit Ohio State and Michigan into the CFP that yesr vs Georgia and Alabama.
    It didn't happen, and by them "inflating" Oregon's national ranking all year, it made the PAC 12 look more legitimate than what it actually was.
    Notre Dame, BYU, hell even Iowa deserved to play in the Rose Bowl that year.
    The Utes blew a 21+ pt halftime lead to Ohio State and the buckeyes were missing 12-14 of their viable starting lineup.
    The moral of the story is that the CFP has been forced to "inflate" PAC 12 rankings for over a decade to make BIG 10 schools rankings look more relevant. The MWC and the AAC has had more success in football and basketball over the past decade than the pathetic arrogant PAC-12

    What was the best expansion decision the Big XII EVER made? I don't take anything away from the addition of BYU which I support 100%. However, slightly over a decade, the Big XII was down to only 8 schools after Mizzou and TAMU bolted for the SEC. The conference was faced with being unable to complete a full schedule for its upcoming football season and comply with its scheduled TV contracts. It needed two worthy Division One schools immediately. The answer was going to court to support WVU's early exit from the floundering Big East football conference. In addition, it supported TCU's decision to breach its agreement to join the Big East. Despite the $20 million settlement with the Big East, the Big XII became a 10 team conference and was able to play a full schedule and comply with TV contracts.
