  • This thing stinks! Nasty acidic rotten plastic smell, its coming home with me to get fixed....more to come.
No way I would allow this thing in my house, that smell has to be toxic and long term exposure cant be good. I will remain in the garage and be worked on outside.

the most amazing thing about all this is that their are still tv repair shops like this. They are non existent where I live, there used to many of them but all have closed up and tv's are disposable, its cheaper to buy a new one then repair an old one

This is the only predicta I'd want to own, all the rest are hyped up. This is the only set I feel like would be worth the 500 bucks tbh id put the bottom next to my bed and have the CRT on top of my dresser

Nothing like coming home after a hard day's work and smoking my pack of cigarettes while sending 20 KV through a lead-shielded cable under my carpet. I'm sure they are both good for me...

I wonder if he actually meant the carpet, or just a rug. It seems like an awfully big commitment to run it under the carpet. You'd have to rip it up to change the room layout or if you sell your house.

I KNOW, right? Those predictas stink to PEE-U! It's the kind of celluloid plastic used around the face of the crt. It smells like bbbbeeeeeeuuuuuulah pew! If u ever have to take the crt out, it REALLY puts it off, LOL! ANYHOW, it IS a nice collectable set, aside from the pew! Re-cap it, check the carbon drifters & old sandies (power resistors) and check them damn baulbs & it SHOULD restore nicely! HOPEfully the CRT is good!

The CRT covers on the 21” models were made of Eastmans Tenite 2 material. They can be rather acrid. People have compared the smell to vomit or rancid butter. The cords on the tandems also emit a strong odor as Shango mentioned. Put one of these in your house and you can smell it when you enter the room. They cable needs to be cleaned periodically because they can become slightly sticky and get grimy. It’s also recommended that a protectant be used to nourish the cable and keep it flexible.
It’s something you have to deal with if you love these TVs.
I keep hope that one day someone will make a 100 per cent accurate reproduction of the 21” screen covers in a material that doesn’t smell, fog over or shrink. You’d think given the popularity of these TVs someone would have done that by now.

That is a cool looking TV. Why was the hole cut in the rear panel ? Maybe the TV was overheating and allow for extra cooling ?!

  • @Suddenlyits1960
    @Suddenlyits1960 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The model in the window is the “debutante”,the base model of the 17” series.
Why did the person who owned the “penthouse” cut a hole in the back panel exposing the tubes? I noticed he cut a section out of Masonite cover underneath the chassis too. I’ve never seen anyone do that before.

I would like to find one for the living room when I am an adult and not a teen and have a job and a house and have all the needs first. Of course I would need to get a DTV converter. The only type of TV I got is an early 1980's GE 10" Color tube and a 2002 RCA 13" color and a Toshiba 15" color TV/DVD combo and a 1977 Panasonic Portable black and white TV and a 1984 Emerson Black and white TV/Clock/Radio combo and I might get a 1987 Panasonic TV/VCR combo, it's more of a monitor with a VCR built in cause you can't hook up anything to it.

Maybe an open B+ fuse for the flyback? That is if it has one.

Hopefully can be saved,.. Maybe it needs a new selonium rectifier if they had one, wonder what else could cause it to smell bad unless it has a leaking transformer, some had oils in them or tar, that can be bad too, but hope u can fix it, show us an update on this when you can.

Thermistor in the AC line before the doubler probably fell apart. Series string Predicta sets have a multi-tap power resistor in the heater (filament) circuit and a thermistor in the line before the doubler. The thermistor is held together by some type of solder which eventually melts and causes it to fall apart.

    • @tiporari

The chassis and the picture tube can be separated. High voltage, power and signals are sent over the cable from the "base" to the display end.

If you want one save up and get one of the modern reproduction ones, the originals are a nightmare to service even if you know what your doing.

There is no such thing as a reproduction of the Predicta Tandem. There have been “reproductions” of the Continental,Pedestal and Holiday. They are all inaccurate looking. I personally don’t care for them.
