Switching Railroad in Detroit

  • When out railfanning in Detroit the other day, we ran across the Detroit Salt Company switcher doing some work in their small yard. We were near the east end of Oakwood yard on Norfolk Southern, where the Detroit Salt Company has their small loading facility and yard. Watching them shuffle back and forth was neat, they would grab a cut of cars, back onto the runner track, and switch tracks. A Conrail Shared Assists local will come into their yard to pick up the outbound loads later this afternoon. The 0007 switcher is beat to heck, but is still earning its keep.

    Oooohhh....Rare Shoot....
    Never scene the DSSX switching operating before. Usually never go near there because of Marathon being next door.
