The Kieth and Donna years were golden, I met the band in 71 with Pigpen and met Owlsey who was Sound man that night. Walked up to Jerry who was sitting on the side of the stage warming up his fingers shook his hand and asked if I could get behind the amps and he let me.Got dosed almost immediately by Bear who had a murine bottle he was dropping on the back of your hand and then licked it off ! I ended up spreading his different batches till the Feds locked him up. The ripple spreads to this day.⚡️🖖🏽⚡️

Come on now. Lets put it this way...there were 11 males in the Dead's history, and only ONE female. Without Donna we would only have Phil and/or Bob sounding like their balls were being stepped on just to do what she did on stage every night and on all of their major 70's studio albums. the high vocal melodies in most dead songs are MADE for a beautiful woman's voice. she had her off nights, but so did every other band member. much love and respect to Donna and all she contributed to the Dead

Maybe 40 or so had traveled independently from Cal, plus the extended GD family. Egyptian dignatories on Day 1. The lunar eclipse final night, 9/16 had a whole other vibe, was a lot busier, US media, cameras, three times the number of people.

I played in a band when I was 16 years old in Salt Lake City UT. Our lead guitarist, named Bart was quite the comedian. Our band mascot was a 6 ' boa that happened to wrap around my foot while being transported to practice. We played if you were going to a fire on the mountain, what would you bring...you can imagine some of the responses. Lots of drugs, love and laughter shared at those Frat gigs. Back in 1983. Miss you Bart, the lake at Liberty Park is still clean. Hope you see this. Love Rachel

The Dead never gave Donna a monitor. She made due, and the band played its best music while she was on board.
Yeah there where times where she was off, but if you listen to as many shows as many of us have, you will find that of all of the members.

f4vre01 As you know the shows weren't all the same. Some shows were longer others shorter.. the songs weren't always the same length but usually long and if stoned who cared. Part of greatness of Dead was that if someone happen to be off key or a riff was different... it still all blended in. Those were some good concerts back then... with the war over and that black cloud gone at last. Freedom...

Never gave her a monitor? Never knew that. WTF? I think Jerry was off more than anyone, in his later years, especially. All that smoking is hard on the vocal cords and it gets harder and harder to hit higher notes. Concerts were a mixed bag, but they were about more than the music, also the community. Love Live the Dead! Of course, I had a terrible crush on Donna Jean. Anyone else? Raise of hands?

6:15 The licks starting here are so good. Pretty unique way to hear Jerry playing. I think it has something to do with the tone.

At 8:40, there's Bill Walton! This was after he broke his ankle in the playoffs and was finished for the 77-78 NBA season. The Blazers had won the title the year before (Walton was Finals MVP that year) and Walton had been named MVP for the 77-78 season. The point is: Bill was never played another game for the Blazers and at this time he was probably licking his wounds trying to figure out what's next.
Hopefully Jerry, Bobby, Phil and the rest helped assuage his sense of mistreatment by his employers.
He's probably not dancing because of his ankle. . .just a head bob to ride the Muse of the dancing Terrapins!

Egypt remains very cool. The street food's pretty good and crossing their streets takes serious nerve. Freindly hard-working people.

This show itself is more symbolic of the Dead's achievements as a band and their notoriety, but Fire on the Mountain is still a great song and the Shakedown from this show is one of my favorites
