Deaky loved Freddie. They were best friends. Freddie’s onstage persona was not like the sweet generous endearing guy he was in his real life. Freddie was not only generous when it came to helping people but generous of spirit… empathetic… an unhappy child often grows into an empathetic adult. He knew John was shy but also knew he was very musically talented and helped bring that out in him. Notice John hasn’t written a tell all book on Freddie. He loves his family and quietly lives his life in his own way. Often over looked which is ridiculous considering he was one of 4 links in the amazing band known as Queen. Rock On John✌🏼🥰 ( ps John was right … there is no Queen without Freddie … I love Brian and Roger to bits and listen to their music but there is no longer the band QUEEN 😓 )
You can hear how John felt in the song Back Chat from the Hot Space album. It was a diss to Brian. John played bass and electric guitar and didn't want it to have a guitar solo. Freddie smoothed over the acrimony, but in the video you will notice Brian isn't using the Red Special. However, he did use it on stage at Milton Keens.
Always thought of him as Freddie's little brother, they had a strong bond and love for each other! Totally agree with him that there is no Queen without Freddie...
John was very close to Freddie. He had problems with facing the large audiences after they got so big. Freddie helped him with that. Johns comment after Freddie died was “There’s no Queen without Freddie”. His wife had said that he didn’t want to even hear the name Queen anymore. He really fell into a dark depression. He was only 19 when he joined Queen.
Good reaction, Rory, to a video that had a number of inaccuracies as others have already commented. I know you have said many times in your reactions that John Deacon's base carried many of Queen's songs. I don't think I completely understood that - or heard that - until I started listening to your reactions and I thank you for pointing me in that direction. Others have also suggested that you watch "Freddie Mercury Saved My Life with Alfie Boe". There are a couple of versions on youtube. I watched the longer version - about 50 minutes. It has really good interviews with many people: Freddie's sister and mother about his young life; the person who was in Freddie's first band, the HECTICS, while he was still in boarding school in India; boyhood chums when he first came to the UK in his teenage years (and some rare footage); and a beautiful interview with Montserrat Cabale about her collaboration with Freddie. There are many other interviews as well. I especially liked the interview with the person who made Freddie's microphone and his "wand" that he twirled all over the place! I think you will really enjoy the video. Thanks for all your reactions Rory. It's been a great deep dive into a band I've loved for 50 years! Bravo!
I had already seen this video, John was the youngest Queen member he was only 19 years old when he joined the band , is true that Freddie helped him a lot in order to gain more confidence, he is the least known member of the band but not unforgettable, he brought us the songs Another one bites the dust and I want to break free. Did you know that Freddie loved cats he had 10 cats throughout his life, most of them rescued from streets and adopted from the non profit foundation Blue cross which he donated funds an he dedicated one of queen's songs to one of his cats Delilah 👍👌🐱😻🎸
John's closeness to Freddie was very important. John lost his Father when on a father/son fishing trip, his father had a heart attack, and John watched him die alone, he was 11 if my memory serves. John was only 19 when he joined Queen, Freddie became a big brother to him, and Freddie protected him. I think Freddie's death became a major blow to John, kind of losing the closest thing to the love he had from his father.
John's father dying while witnessing it alone was the missing puzzle piece in my knowledge of John Deacon's life and consequent bond with Freddie. Thank you so much, Debora 🙂
The rest of the Roger Taylor quote about Freddie Mercury was that as frontman for Queen he got all the fame but he ALSO got all the blame from the critics etc. Tough to be the lightening rod in the spot light sometimes.
one of those TH-cam videos where the contect creator (not you , the video!) is not really expert on the band as many glaring mistakes such as saying the band had several albums in the 1980's that were not successful until live aid in 1985 changed everything - the reality was "The Works" in 1984 had been a massive success , the only other albums in 80's before that were "The Game" (another great album) and "Hot Space" in 1982 (which it's true did not go down well with all fans) Also , John didn't leave at "the height of their fame" as said in video , he left a few years after Freddie died as he no longer felt he needed to stay in the music industry , he always was a big family man and who can blame him!
I think these videos make things up. Roger said they left Trident because Freddie refused to carry on saying he just couldn't anymore Flick of the wrist shows how angry he was then dotl! Jim Beach said when they came to see him it was mainly Freddie talking They dont explain Peter said about Freddie saying John git them through 70s I dont understand why Freddie would say that If John was good at understanding contracts why did they sign up to Trident?
1984 the works uk no 2 Ga Ga no 2 brake free no 3 hard life no 6 hammer to fall no 13 (Freddie love kills no 10) they had singles through the year that did well Live Aid July 85 they had just finished their world tour and performed infront of atleast 250 000 crowd at Rio both nights
Awesome reaction as always! The story is slightly more complex. John Deacon was really voted out of Queen. Each member had an equal vote, John and Freddie often voted together, but with Freddie's death there was no one to support John Deacon, he did not agree with a lot of decisions Brian and Roger were making, after 1991 they were basically now two against one. Jim Beach, Queen's lawyer also received Freddie's vote in the band, and Jim Beach always sides with Brian May. So that really left Jon Deacon out in the cold.
I don’t really like how he’s always painted as a tragic figure. Yes he lost a good friend. It’s hard. Sometimes very hard. Then he decided to live his life in a different way & seems happy. 🤷♂️ FWIW I read somewhere that the 4 of them had an agreement that if one of them “left the band”, ie quit, the band would dissolve. NGL would definitely love to see him play again. Oh Lordy, Tim was never part of Queen.
Brian May mastermind!? ok yeah sure? Brian and Roger had given up and Freddie encouraged them to start again with him Brian didn't like audience participation which was a huge part of the band and Freddies idea and having more a performance... how was he the mastermind exactly?
@bluebell Brian didn’t like audience participation? Why do you think he wrote “We Will Rock You” ….. Also John didn’t leave the band, nor did Roger or Brian. They never split up - John only officially left for good in 1997. Not sure where you’re getting your information from but it’s not accurate.

Deaky was so under rated as a base player and contributor of Queen
he didn't directly replace Tim he was smile.
He wasnt the first bassist for Queen there were a few in between!
