- [No commentary] My first recorded attempt at a HoMMII Speedrun, specifically the Roland (Good) Campaign. This is my second attempt after off-screen routing in the last week. AFAIK, there's no community focused on speedrunning HoMM games, so I had to wing it in terms of rules. Such that: no cheat codes, no exiting the program, saves & loads are fine. Time starts when 'Campaign' is clicked; time stops when the last dialog box is clicked. I would appreciate it if anyone has any feedback for me. -- Watch live at / adamdotpng

Just bought this game on GOG. As a kid, I used to to build a huge armie, before I started my expansion. Now I figuered out that with those dwarfs I don't have to wait until I build buildings in my castle and units. Then I started to wonder if someone is speedruning heroes... so here I am. Good job.
For those early missions it always surprises me how many people I watch wait through the first week or try to build up a force. When some of the best tactics is to make it to their castle early and rip out their own ability to make troops or their economy.
Then again when I was younger I was pretty timid in these campaign's
I think most young ones would think to play defensive until they had more than enough troops to take the entire map.

Its a bit hard to be offensive if you dont know The map tho. And considering how often in these types of games the AI cheat I always found it safer to go slow and steady

Thanks, I thought of it as I planned out the entire campaign. Although it works in a general sea map, it takes a lot of tries to get right, and is slower than the current strategy.
I totally forgot about the starting bonus; the current WR video uses Mirror Image and overtakes Green with the 4 Genies before they sail out.
I would never think this is possible. That job comparable to my whole high school studies in just one morning time. 🤣

I just played the game and I started the final mission with half the force (i.e. 7 dragons, instead of 15). How you managed to start with so great army with Roland?
I loved the video, BTW. So much different of my approach.

Why did you restart some of them over and over?
There is small a chance that you will start with a castle that has a lvl2 dwelling already built. If you do, it gives a fairly big early advantage.
That, and for most maps I'm looking for desired secondary skills on certain heroes. Skills for movement are the primary ones I'm looking for.

I played Heroes 2 (after Heroes 1, my first Heroes game) for the first time. I made it in 480 turns. I took the crown for the last mission.
I can't beat the last mission. I also chose the crown instead of the army and they keep on destroying me with their earth elemental spell.

Hi, that would be part habit of mine and part strategy for any other map. I was trying to get the Archers building (Tier 2) to save a day for purchasing later buildings. It helps with any castle as you can usually rush to Tier 5 or 6 creatures this way.
Now that I see it, it might not have been necessary for this map, as there were plenty of Dwarves around, but with how scattered the AI can be on this map, I chose to build up troops to catch any stragglers.
is there a reason all the sfx are disabled? is it better performance due to all of the animations being run at their fastest speed?
Sound effects are disabled because of the delay that occurs before you are able to provide inputs to the game again. Notable ones are the battle introduction, picking up resources, and visiting landmarks. Little delays like those add up over the course of a run.
I don't believe animations effect performance nowadays, being played on DOSBox; I recall some brief stutters on old computers due to loading, but those were mainly audio issues.
wow, now that you mention it I never actually noticed that all of those little things take time but it makes sense that you will lose many seconds to minutes over a campaign to things that occur with every interaction.

Is that the GOG (Dosbox) version? If so, can you post your Dosbox settings?
I am playing on the GOG/DOSBox version.
The only settings I change are where:
fulldouble=true
output=opengl
core=auto
cputype=auto
cycles=max
memsize=32
and where audio settings occur to 44100
Your resolution settings will vary how you prefer them.

+sirhcnil Agh! That's what happens when I think two steps ahead; I'll forget one step behind me. Luckily it wasn't as bad as it could've been, as the last fight could've been worse.
It is worth to take 500 xp from chest as it's has worst ratio? I get that for first level it can be good but you never have to much gold.
edit: So that how you should play HoMM. I could never think you can rush that much.
I would take the exp if I'm picking up a chest with my main hero, but take the gold if it's picked up by a scout. There's usually a lot of gold piles elsewhere, so it evens out.
Rushing works well in HoMM since most maps are King-of-the-Hill style; so if you know where your opponents' base is, then you can head straight for it instead of exploring the map.
Any reason to retire heroes besides fighting. Like AI make different decision. As it just weird to hire one and then disband them without using them.
Do money and other resources make comp more cearfull as they know that you can buy more trops. You don't build to much or recruit and skip many turns. Isn't this oppose speed run goal.
Dismissing a hero instead of leaving them on the map unused skips the end-turn dialogue box from appearing, so it saves time per turn if you know they won't be used further.
As far as I'm aware how the AI works, they only plan on what's in reach of their heroes. If it looks like the AI can win an objective, they'll go for it; otherwise, they collect whatever resource they can, avoid fights, and/or defend their castle.
I try not to turtle in my castles and skip turns as it also gives the AI the same chance to build troops and collect more resources. The speedrun goal is to beat each map as quickly as possible, so my strategy is to collect troops on the map and rush enemy castles to force the AI to stay near their bases.
