    Commenting on the loop knot. In at least 1 other video you have said “follow the line”. That is golden! Helps make a simple knot even simpler 👍 edit: knots require practice. Videos make it look simple. Why? Cause the presenter has done it MANY times. Kudos to you for knowing and presenting extremely well. Invaluable expertise!

    I'm 69 years old and learned the clinch knot when I was a small boy. Mainly because the directions were printed on the package of leaders that we'd buy. They were probably Eagle Claw or some brand like that. It was cheaper to buy hooks by themselves and tie my own leaders so I'd sit in front of the TV and tie leaders for hours! That's the only knot that I knew for decades. I lived in an ignorant bliss! When I decided to try out some braided line things got more complicated for me. Especially when I decided to use mono backing to offset the cost of this much more expensive line. I've learned to tie (and promptly forgotten) so many different knots in the past 15 years that I go into brain freeze just thinking about it. I learned to snell hooks about the same time I learned the double uni knot to tie braid onto my mono backing and I learned the palomar because the clinch knot doesn't appear suitable for braid.
    My whole point in even commenting here on a year old post is that my old brain refuses to remember any more knots than it already knows! I now use a Trilene knot instead of a clinch knot. They are so similar that it was easy to remember. Just watching you tie the FG knot was confusing enough, I won't be using that one! I know that y'all advise against using swivels but I've never had a problem with them so i won't need to be tying leaders on and the uni knot isn't something that I see very often. it stays hidden under that braid except on rare occasions that I have a fish get that long of a run before I can turn them. That loop knot that you demonstrated here will be a game changer for me though! That's sweet and so similar to the one I currently use that it was easy to sit here and tie it right along with you. I guess that some things never change for me. Here I sit, tying knots while looking at a computer screen! I wish Pop was still alive because he'd get a kick out of that.
    I hope that I didn't sound critical, or anything like that. That was not my intention at all. I appreciate these videos and people who take the time to film and edit them. That's what I set out to say: thank you! I just retired a few weeks ago and will have much more time to fish now.

    First off let me thank you for your videos. I learned the fg from your first ”easiest way to tie fg knot" video. They have truly been the best educational fishing vids for braid to mono since I do cast this knot through guides. Being a surf fisherman and needing to use a shock leader for heavier lead for distance and to stick in rough surf I have put this knot through the ringer when it comes to through the guide casting. 3oz lures and up to 6oz lead out of a 11ft rod over and over is plenty of friction to cause the knot to wear pretty fast. Though It is an amazing knot! With your instruction on pinky finger tension I have become very fast at retying in the unfortunate event that I have to. I don't even consider using another knot for braid to mono. I have used 50lb braid to 30lb mono and found that due to the diameter difference it works very well. I will also add that it works significantly longer, without breakage due to wear at that critical first braid coil that you mention, if I use gel super glue to reinforce the braid. I also find that it makes it even smoother through the guides if you take the time to add glue then smooth glue flat to the surfaces of the line. For a Surfcaster I have full confidence in this system. Thank you again for showing me the way of the best and quickest way to tie the fg knot.!

    I never comment on TH-cam but I can’t resist:
    Right around 13:20 Joe says that knot failure at the lure is best because it minimizes litter in the water, and immediately after Luke clips the tag and pitches it overboard😂. Joe notices it though and he’s prepared on the next knot.

    I have always had trouble tying a reliable loop knot that I could trust with my top water or jigs. Your loop knot is so easy to tie and the ability to control the size of the loop is also a plus. Thanks for sharing. I started tying the FG know a couple of years ago and at first it was the most frustrating and time-consuming pain in the world to do. After getting the hang of it was well worth the time and effort since it is so strong.

I fish with 8 pound braid 15 pound fluorocarbon leader, and that knot has absolutely never failed me because yes I agree with you. The drag set on your reel properly means everything.

    Thanks for posting this video on knots - I learned a lot from this. So many of the videos today cover the "hot" techniques but never mention how they're tied.
    I fish freshwater so I don't go as heavy with the leaders as you do - except when fishing for muskie and big pike. One thing that confused me was your reasoning for not using swivels. It seemed like you were saying you didn't use them because the braid spins easier than the swivel. Just curious, why would you allow the line twist when this will weaken you line much more than tying a good knot to the swivel. When using spoons and especially inline spinners like Mepps, line twist can be a real problem. Maybe I missed something but would like to hear more about your preference for not using swivels.

    Great video guys! One thing I will say though is that because braid has no stretch, it will pop with too much tension too quickly which happens flipping grass for largemouth. The rod has to be a broomstick to yank them out of the weeds and braid smaller than 50-60lb test will snap with the hard hook set without any give in the rod tip.

    Quick question on drag.
    What about how the drag setting can effect getting a good hook set? If I’m set at 2.5 lbs but the drag squeals on every hook set (for small trout to juvenile Tarpon) am I losing tarpon because of this. I adjusted my drag just enough to not squeal on hook set (maybe coincidence or is just in my mind) that hook set ratio has improved. Anyways, I would love to hear your thoughts on this and for those of us fishing from shore around lots of mangrove roots and other structure. Thank you ;)

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      typically, you want the fish that have a softer mouth, like trout, to be able to have a little bit of play in the drag. with tarpon you might want the drag a bit tighter, but still allow them to pull drag as they can fight for some time.

    I must have some issue because the older I get I really struggle tying knots, it's like my fingers are partially disconnected from my brain. Because of that I prefer the Albright over the double uni, it's like tying one knot over tying two with the double uni. I've tried all the "snug" knots, and I keep going back to the simple clinch knot, but with a doubled line, because it's easy, and it's stronger than it gets credit for. If I'm concerned with strength I just up size the line test a bit, where I would use 10lb, I just use 12lb.

  • @wsmith3849

    The reason the bass guys use 65 lb braid is it has more abrasion resistance, can lift the fish out of deep cover, and when you set the hook hard it digs into the line on the spool less. But id never go down to 10lb leadee

    can the double uni knot pass easily thru the guides, or is it best to always have the leader to mainline knot below the tip guide? Is the FG knot better for passing thru the guides, or again should be below the tip guide?

    • @Saltstrong

      It can, but we recommend reeling the line in so the knot is below the first eye. If you need to reel it in further, we would recommend using the FG knot

      Hey there Andy, while I'm not a part of the Salt Strong staff I am a member of the insider club and I'd like to help you out. Judging by the names of the fish you've listed, l presume your an angler from Australia and going after more reef/pelagic species off the coast. In that case, the knot strength should only increase with the thickness and heavier kg breaking test of your lines. I know that in tests done on the FG knot it retains 98% of the lines breaking strength so it shouldn't be a problem for you. As for the modified Rapala/No-slip loop knot I'm not as certain but there is always the option to just add more wraps around the main line before passing it back through. I hope this helps you and I wish you many a tight line

    Hello, I am a surf fishing guy mostly. I thought I heard you say the FG knot is NOT good for passing through guides. I am using 30lb. Power Pro on the reel and 30 or 40lb. shock leader. What would you suggest as a line to leader knot for passing through guides?

    • @xm-5178
      @xm-5178 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey there P, I might not be the staff over at Salt Strong but I am a member and I'd like to help you out. While yes, Luke does often say that the FG is not an ideal knot to cast through guides, take it with a grain of salt as there is no knot out there that will cast perfectly through guides. In my experience, it's completely fine to cast an FG knot through guides if it's done correctly, that is, when you cinch down the knot, make sure that the braid goes from opaque to translucent from the pressure all the way down the knot pretty much ensuring that it won't come loose. The other trick is to cut the tag end of the leader as close as possible to the knot itself as that excess tag end constantly knocking against your guides as you reel in can weaken the knot especially if you only finish it off with repeated half-hitches. This is why I finish off mine with a rizzuto finishing knot but that's just my personal preference. I hope this helps answer your question man, wishing you tight lines

      @@psmitty8149 I'm guessing he misspoke, as I believe he has said elsewhere that the fg is the slimmest profile knot out there to which I'd agree. Persoanally I use the crazy Alberto as it's quicker to tie and and goes through the guides just fine, even on my inshore bait casters.

      In my experience the blood knot isn't bad for mono to mono of the same or similar diameter, but not for braid to mono or lines of drastically different diameters. I used to tie a blood knot when someone was bottom fishing and got an unfixable backlash while their rig is still on the bottom 250ft down. I'd cut out the backlash, tie a blood knot to reconnect the 40lb test mono, and they're back fishing.
