@@madFame i do have one question/peculiarity...i swear my amplitude modulation sensitivity doesn't behave in the same way as yours...is there anything i need to do in the function settings to match up? even with the mod wheel all the way up it tends to cut out some of the growl you get in your patches when you do assign amp mod sens to 3
mamsk Same here, its sounds slightly different on mine, im using a dx7s which is newer than the original one shown here. Mine also doesnt have an eg bias “on” setting that i can see, just eg bias with range zero to 99

Very good explanation. Since my DX100 stopped working, I have missed the solid bass patch.But recently i downloaded the Arturia DX V synth demo, and at patch 4-OP Bass is a good version of solid bass.

@jkandclark Yeah, I thought it would be interesting to recreate using only 4 Ops on the DX7 and a similar algorithm. The frequency values and envelopes are a little different than on the DX100 but the sound came out well eventually. Thanks for watching!

Awesome tutorial!! I now have Solid Bass on my SY77. I took your DX7 conversion and converted it to SY77, which not only have different algorithms, it also differs in level settings. I used algorithm 31 on my SY77. Will you please make a tutorial on how to convert the DX100:s "Tease - Jazz organ" used on "I like to move it, move it..." Big thanks!!!
I think this patch sounds a bit more analog if you set the OSC keysync setting off. I means each keypress sounds slightly different as the operators waveforms are at different phases. It's subtle though.
These videos are great, @madFame. I always wonder how you arrive at the numbers. Can you expand on your thinking behind each choice? It would help in learning to design patches. Maybe for future custom patch tutorials...

Ohhhh man, you changed my life! I had never thought it was possible mimic a solid/lately using a dx7 , and for sure not realistic like this (almost 100%) , well about the digital distortion missed maybe a bit crusher could be usefull ?
Yes, the FM chips in DX7 are different to the DX100. DX100 is a lot clearer but has less programming capabilities. The DX7 can emulate Solid Bass very well but it has a slightly softer tone.

I got lost here too at first, but after rewatching it realised i'd misunderstood. If you open up the Envelope tab-on the right side you can see where you change rate 1,2,3,4 and level1,2,3,4 - he goes through them seperately for operator 3, 4, 5 + 6
Hey man, sorry I only have this quick recipe format. All you need is to know where the buttons are. Then just copy which ones I press, saves the long winded explanations.
@davedagreat69 That's a great question. In this case you can experiment and see what happens with OP1 and OP2. Anytime you have spare operators that occupy their own space and are not connected to the operators currently being used (in this case a two-op stack: OP1 = Carrier OP2 = Modulator) you can program anything you like with them and see how that sits with this sound the other operators are making. A good tip for this patch would be to use OP1 Output level to balance it's volume against the Solid Bass sound as it may come out a bit loud with an output level of 99. I suggest around 90 - 95 and then mess around with OP2 output level and both of their frequencies to start getting some tones going.
@@madFame Great. My DX is at the menders at the moment, but I have a TX802 and SY99, so I might try it on those. It's very similar to what I do with my SQ80. It has three oscillators, so I make a standard sawtooth bass patch with two of them, then use the third to add interesting attack transients to the sound to change the feel of it.
I copied Op3 to Op1 and Op4 to Op2 then detuned them and it gives a nice thick sound. I've heard people used to do that with two TX81Z units using this same patch.
Yup, by default the DX7 generates sine waves. If you transpose the keyboard to lower octaves and play the low keys you'll definitely hear sine sub bass.
Any time I'm DJing a club and this lately bass starts coming through the speakers...people get to jerkin'. Not sure why, not sure how...but you can't argue with results 🤷♂

Can anyone please point me to good tutorials (preferably 4 operator) for the following FM patches: steel drum, human voice/choir, musical saw and, harpsichord? There appears to be no shortage of FM synth tutorials for bass, brass and electric piano sounds but not for the instruments/sounds I desire. Thanks.
While these distortion add to the character of the sound for sure, I don't see how anybody would really like that. My TX7 has some of these artifacts and even that gets on my nerves sometimes

I just programmed this into an FM layer on my Kurzweil K2700... It sounds BANG ON exact! Orbital Chime here we come.... lolol

Always loved that patch on the 100. Never thought about trying to recreate it on the 7 - or any other patch for that matter

The DX7 V has the Solid Bass as a preset. It's called 'Lately Bass'. Since the Bass originated from the TX81Z.

i tried making this synth patch in ableton and i accidentally created the organ 2 patch from the korg m1

I own a DX7 and a DX21, I think the Solid Bass preset on the DX21 is far better.
