From someone a few months ago: They had a theory that the explosion, the fires, and I'm gonna guess this earthquake was the big explosion that caused the full Garganta outbreak. It was a result of Santonian, Dreyfus, and KDS keeping the Sleeper or Nam-V virus contained, then they lost control when a Matter Wave Projector test went wrong. The explosiom resulted from that, and made holes in Garganta (the very same ones we enter into). At this point, the outbreak had already hit the surface from a select few Santonian employees going on vacation

so basically SMC using a giant bomb to open a hole to get iridium and government cover it up

Well, there's an explosion on Garganta, and then the news about the Merida Earthquake happened, so it probably is the reason.
Maybe, but why would they detonate a bomb big enough to cause the damage that we see in the complex? Why damage their own facility?
