    Lets keep in mind that spaced armor is way harder to penetrate than regular non-spaced plates. The reason is that the projectile has space to tumble, fragment and/or change flight while traveling in between the plates. Great video as always, love how you bring out different targets to be shot with crazy rounds.

      That's also why the black tip didn't make it as far. It just happened to yaw on exit and break up hence the two impacts.

    • @alnov91
      @alnov91 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats not exactly true, layers are important, but space is a negative. Energy transfer is the goal, and space between layers denies the transfer of energy.

  • @seedlesstom
    @seedlesstom 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I haven't seen it mentioned yet, but copper work hardens. The more it's deformed, the harder it gets. That could be part of the reason the black tip didn't do as much damage and is almost certainly why the bullet turned left. It kept pulling towards the softer side. You can anneal the copper to get it back to a pliable state after it's been work hardened.

    That 1st piece of copper with the tracer/ incindiary round hole was like art, that was so cool n perfect, I'd have put it on a shelf somewhere😁 keep up the good work, ur videos are awesome!!

  • @garyadams6889
    @garyadams6889 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    The second shot veered off in a direction away from where the first shot went in. The first shot made the metal around the hole it created harder from compression forces. If fired at fresh copper plates it would have gone through all three.

    Amazing that a projectile can penetrate 3 inches of copper and still have lethal power. I recall from documentaries hearing stories of American troops in tanks getting hit by 50 cal bursts. They said the bullet would bounce around inside the cockpit and sometimes kill someone.

      Copper is a very maluable substance, similar to silver and gold. Indeed they are all under the same column in the periodic table, a reason why they have similar properties

    Should grind the metal back down to the surface of the plates, clamp all three together, and try a APIT round on the whole block (without the space in between). Assuming the danger of bounce-back ricochet can be ameliorated.

  • @rre9121

    So your second shot might have hit a hardened region of the copper. When deformed copper actually gets much stronger and harder, that's the kind of skin-like patterning you see around the penetrations.

    On a serious note. It would be nice to see the limits of each 50 BMG projectile. Specifically, how much material is required to resist penetration by each type of round. Start with softer materials of increasing thickness, like copper and aluminum and work your way up to 7075/7475 T6 then onto brass, mild steel, hardened steel. This way we could see the limits of each round. It would be a bit more of an experiment than you are used to but that is no big deal. You have the equipment, interest and God knows you have the time... lol. It would be a series of videos that many people would be interested in AND it would keep you out of trouble for a few months. Think about it. I actually do not know what those limits are and it would be nice to know.

    You kill me! haha. always burning your finger!
    I figured the soft copper would allow for pass-through. It may not tumble next time, and the incendiary might tumble next..?? Great vid!!

    We need the videos to keep coming, please save those fingers! I can recommend the Leatherman Skeletool CX, my favorite edc tool for the last 5 years.

    Copper is such a soft and cozy material! Somebody should start producing copper pillows. I'd definitely get one.

    Interesting to see. Copper is fairly soft. I would say, always compare with a standard round. Very cool to have high tech rounds but standard is a good reference point. You can also look up the principle of the rounds you use.
    For future videos, I'd very much like to see aermet 100 plates if you can get someone to give you some. It's a very strong steel alloy. Maybe start with 10mm because it's strong. You could also try Glare sheet which is an alu-fiberglass composite used for aircraft and explosive resistant cargo containers.

    Best shooting channel on TH-cam. Your videos are about shooting. Not bullshit music and the drive there and what you are before shooting and about 8 more minutes of not shooting

    The kinetic energy of this 800m/s bullet slowed down by these plates. The friction. It somehow gets transfered into heat. And by the way that you couldn't punch this bullet through the plates by hand, yet it still will get hot after some time because of friction, you can tell what an aweful lot of heat these bullets must have, which just traveled trough inches of solid metal... So I guess one shouldn't be surprised if you burn your fingers when you try to put them up right after ;-)

    Gave me an idea. Use one of those laser thermometers to show viewers the temperature of the slugs after they've been shot. Would be cool to see and would save you from future burns.

    Definitely need a .50 BMG loaded with API rounds when you have that much copper on hand (-: That had to be an expensive experiment.
    Bear in mind that although copper is pretty soft, it is very dense (it's actually used in composite tank armor) so for a bullet to go through 3" of it is really impressive.

    Edwin, I have an idea for you. Carry a small bottle of cold water with you when you go to check out the damage. Just a 20oz bottle or something. Cool the rounds off before you touch them since you always want to pick em up right away! Haha....Great videos man, keep up the cool stuff!
