Cast iron is FAR different from steel. I'm not even sure where to begin, but think of steel as carbon "inside" iron, well mixed. Think of cast iron as carbon and ferrite barely mixed. hey you should try shooting a forged steal item and see what the rounds do. a forged crankshaft might just work I'd be curious to see how well that holds up to a 50bmg
It still stopped every pistol bullet they the at it, except the 500 mag. I'd say that's good for a pretty good NIJ rating. I'd have liked to see the other NIJ threshold rounds, like .308 and 30-06 black tip.
There's also different kind of stainless steels as well. Regular stainless steel is not hard at all. Probably hardness closer to mild steel. RHA Mil-A 12560 is similar and almost identical to Grade 5 Titanium. 300 ~ 400 brinell hardness range.
When ever I've shopped for cookware I've never stopped to consider how impervious it is to a variety of high powered rifle and pistol cartridges. It's probably the reason that I own so many colanders and no pots or pans. Thanks for the entertaining and informative video.
You should place numbers on each of these stacked targets when you shoot them. It will be easier to tell which one was hit and the order of when they were hit.
The problem I have with your test is there is not enough resistance from the pans, as the bullet hits the pan the pan move backward absorbing some of the energy. I bet if you stack the pans on each other with a very heavy backstop or wall your outcome will be different.

Hey Edwin, have you thought about using a tall bipod or tripod? Something like 4ft. high that will make it easier to shoot the big heavy rifles accurately. Sometimes people don't want to use them because they think it isn't cool. Well, once you start using it you will be mad at yourself for not starting sooner. Get a good one (or two) and watch how much better you shoot and how much more fun you have. They also are much safer in many situations.
The metal is far stronger around the edge where he shoot it. It's thinker there, and it is reinforced/stiffened by the edge that is perpendicular to the bottom. There is a competing factor, where the area closer to the sides of the pan has less give, and it absorbs less energy than it would if he shoot it in the middle. But that's not enough to overcome the stiffening effects of the sides and the thickened metal close to the corner.

The sound, the movement and anything else is energy being changed from momentum to sound, heat, motion, heat etc. if they were bunched up or stacked inside one another, it may be different as well since the round wouldnt have that space to tumble or turn after each pan
