I imported this game a few years ago, and this review is a crowning achievement of CGR! The game is now officially named Musha Atari Futari as far as I"m concerned! Mark doesn't just review a great game, he even improves it.
That's right. Deathsmiles and Deathsmiles 2 are released in American/Euro regions, so is Dodonpachi Resurrection and Akai Katana. Don't remember the company's name, but its logo is a red star and it is in UK.
The "lag" is actually intentional. It occurs in the arcade boards and actually makes it so the player has any kind of a chance to dodge certain patterns. These games were born in the arcade, so it only made sense for Cave to simulate the slowdown in the port. They chose not to originally for Deathsmiles, and there was a huge backlash from fans.
Have you seen the recent 1CC of the much harder Ultra mode version 1.01 (the first and only person able to beat it) "Mushihimesama Futari 1.01 Ultra Mode, Reco Normal 806,065,667"
The 360s region locking is set by the disk. Some games especially niche Japanese shmups are Region Free. DMC HD collection US works on my PAL 360 aswell.
You can get by with that (sort of) in the first 2 stages, after that, you have to start moving around the screen to make sure the clusters of aimed bullets are always a step behind you, otherwise you'll end up in inescapable situations. These Cave games generally don't reward you for staying close to bullets (that's Psyvariar), but for point blanking enemies or being close to them when they die.
I saw the game at GameOn when the exhibition visited Hungary. I know it was a japan-only DreamCast game but outside japan it's only available on the xbox. I don't know about the licensed part, maybe you're right.
It's great on an ipad, because the ship autofires all the time, you just need to control the ship with your finger and change weapon styles/drop bombs with a push button on the side.
It's a phonograph, they were before LP records. You could record things on wax rolls, like an audio log. They are being used in Bram Stokers Dracula from 1897 already. Play back with a needle and speaker just like a LP player.
This game is absolutely awesome if you can get it. The action and the animations just flow so nicely together. Make sure to look in Downloadable section and pay extra for "Black Label" update (1200pts) which gives higher Rez option
That's called "video game genre". The difference for those who are new in/don't care about/don't like these types of games may not be noticeable, but they are there. Different shoot-em-ups have different scoring, combo systems, weapon gauges and the like. That said, CAVE shooters do tend to be similar to each other. Oh, and I never thought I'd hear "Truxton" being played again. Fantastic!
Actually, the ipad version can turn off the slowdown completely and run fullspeed all the time. Makes the game alot harder when you never get those slowdown periods to get an overview of the bullets now and then.
Great, I cannot read Hiragana too well especially in that stylized fonts. I guess I just have to find it by remembering the boxart and say I want this one to the sales clerk. Then I can ask him/or her what is this game called?
I'm 22 years old going on 23 so your point is invalid. Plus Mark reviews every game from almost all generations. He does point out some things about the game as he goes alone and all that but everyone here loves him for his commentary. He has fun with his videos in what he says about the game which is why his reviews are always my favorite. He never really puts hate on ANY game and if he does he makes the game still seem great and that's why he is awesome in his style. Open your mind if you can.
Mushi is the Japanese word for Bug or Insect, and Hime means Princess. "Sama" is a title of respect. Futari could be translated as "Duo". So the title essentially translates to Bug Princess Duo.
This game is really good. Get a copy while you still can if you can find it online. There are few more multi region Cave shooters. They're Espgaluda 2 and 2game combo Mushi pork and Pink sweets. Last one is harder to get.
Actually Cave shooters don't rely on pattern Memorization. If you're used to the type of game, you can clear this on your first try (Same for Dodonpachi too). Memorization applies more to something like Tohou bosses than Cave bosses
Actually some of the slowdown is not intentional... which is why they "fixed" some of the slowdown in Deathsmiles. The rest of the slowdown is induced intentionally by overloading the system.
Don't forget Deathsmiles, Dodonpachi Resurrection (Daifukkatsu) and Akai Katana Shin! Luckily, you don't have to import Deathsmiles if you're in the USA. With Dodonpachi and Akai Katana though, you'll have to import it from the EU region. (Also region free)
Of course I've played them. I have both this, akai katana, deathsmiles, dodonpachi resurrection on various formats. If you mostly don't move around alot, you don't get hit, and most of the games reward you for straying close to the bullets aswell. When you die, you were just in the wrong spot at the wrong time.
Everyone knows what a Cave shootem up is. You fly a little ship/person/robot, weave through thousands of bullets in set patterns, and score lots of points earning multipliers is various ways. Mark doesn't have to tell us how it works.
I play the original via sneaky PS2 disc swap and a *ahem* backup - likewise the other PS2 CAVE games (you can also emulate this on PC now) - I bought all the region free/Euro release 360 ones and do hope you're right about those two coming out - I understand SDOJ may be the last (at one stage it wasn't happening)..
Well, you're wrong about Deathsmiles 2 being released in Europe, for some reason, Cave forgot that the company has fans in the european region as well. You're right about everything else tho. And the company with the red star is called Rising Star Games.
To be honest, if you asked me 6 months ago, I wouldnt have had any clue what a Cave shooter was, so I'd have to agree with the earlier poster that a little more info about gameplay systems could be nice.
All these games have the same basic rules. You just have to avoid the little red "heart" of your ship/witch/thing safe, it doesn't matter if they hit your main body. Usually you gain more points by being closer to the bullets. In this game, the score colour changes when you're supposed to switch to the other weapon to earn more points.
Hey, even CAVE themselves can't get the name right, that's why the BLACK LABEL DLC is called "HUTARI" in the marketplace. Be sure to get that if you get this game, Black Label is awesome.
Well technically, they're called 'postpositions' in Japanese, since they come after adjective. But you're right, it's not an actual sentence. Then again, neither is "2001: A Space Odyssey". Titles don't have to make sense. I just took the words and made it sound as cool as possible... Even though it'd probably sound like gibberish.
All of CAVEs games have great OSTs, google the company name to find out what their titles are called and listen to them on YT. Akia Katana, Dodonpachi Ressurrection Black Labels are some of my fave, so is this games prequel Mushihimesama OST - Like the Night of the Falling Stars
One of the hardest games I ever see. Some rumors say that to obtain the best "trophy" you must complete the game in God mode without losing a life nand using a bomb. One question Mark: How was your experience fighting Queen Larsa in this game (the final boss. And I like so much her BGM)...
Unfortunately it's the only part of the game people know anything about, so that one horribly stretched final boss video, and touhou, is all the average person knows about shmups anymore.
Its about pattern memorization and patience, many bullet attacks give the illusion that they are nearly impossible to evade and even bait you into getting killed. Most Bullet hell games are not even that difficult if you know what you're doing.
Ok, I was just explaining to that guy that "futari" doesn't mean "the second", it means "two people" or "the second person". I.E. it is specific to counting people.
Mark, you have just done the best review ever of my favorite game this whole gen. Thank you.
Love these arcade port imports, thanks cave, and thanks to mark for doing this review!!!!!!!
Some Japanese for those interested:
mushi = insect
hime = princess
sama = added to the end of a name with royalty or elite status
futari = 2 people
I imported this game a few years ago, and this review is a crowning achievement of CGR! The game is now officially named Musha Atari Futari as far as I"m concerned! Mark doesn't just review a great game, he even improves it.
Hey, Mark (the other Mark, I mean), fellow Antioch, California brethren here. Good on you for contributing to CGR.
Lol I'm going to use the Musha Atari Futari.
That's right. Deathsmiles and Deathsmiles 2 are released in American/Euro regions, so is Dodonpachi Resurrection and Akai Katana. Don't remember the company's name, but its logo is a red star and it is in UK.

The music in this game is phenomenal! I adore it, and will definitely save it in my PC
So if I buy the original version of this but it's missing the dlc codes is it still worth buying? Or am I missing out on a lot of stuff?
"kids riding dragons or something" That hit my funnybone for some reasonXD
WRONG REVIEW,MARK! 1:34
The game is called Bug Princess in English. It's been on apple store for a couple of years already.
It's called Bug Princess 2 in english. The weird format suggests that this is a straight port of the ipad/ios version.
Have you seen the recent 1CC of the much harder Ultra mode version 1.01 (the first and only person able to beat it)
"Mushihimesama Futari 1.01 Ultra Mode, Reco Normal 806,065,667"

That's his forte, his reviews aren't like other reviews, they're funny as hell. And his voice is mesmerizing.
I saw the game at GameOn when the exhibition visited Hungary. I know it was a japan-only DreamCast game but outside japan it's only available on the xbox. I don't know about the licensed part, maybe you're right.
i lost it when he said musha XD
Great game. As are all of Caves shmups.
A review of the fantastic Akai Katana would be great.
Thanks for this review mark. As ever great stuff. =)
The game looks great. I might have to check it out some day.
Also, to my knowledge, the last licensed Dreamcast game in Japan. Correct me if I'm wrong.
It's great on an ipad, because the ship autofires all the time, you just need to control the ship with your finger and change weapon styles/drop bombs with a push button on the side.

Mushihimesama Futari (虫姫さま二人)means 'Insect Princess Duo'.
'Mushi' means insect or bug, princess is 'Hime-sama' and futari signifies two people.
This game is absolutely awesome if you can get it. The action and the animations just flow so nicely together. Make sure to look in Downloadable section and pay extra for "Black Label" update (1200pts) which gives higher Rez option
Really? Ok I was mistaken. I thought DeathSmiles II was published by Rising Star in UK because Rising Star is in UK. Thanks for correcting me.
I don't know who CAVE is, but "Bug Princess 2" might be the localized name of the game, but the direct translation is "Two Insect (Bug) Princesses."
That's called "video game genre".
The difference for those who are new in/don't care about/don't like these types of games may not be noticeable, but they are there.
Different shoot-em-ups have different scoring, combo systems, weapon gauges and the like.

Oh, and I never thought I'd hear "Truxton" being played again.
Fantastic!
Try Trigger Heart Exelica, it's awailable on xbox.
Actually, the ipad version can turn off the slowdown completely and run fullspeed all the time. Makes the game alot harder when you never get those slowdown periods to get an overview of the bullets now and then.
It's an iphone/ipad game ported to the xbox360. That's why the screen is "squashed"
new guy, you got a lot to learn in this channel
Great, I cannot read Hiragana too well especially in that stylized fonts. I guess I just have to find it by remembering the boxart and say I want this one to the sales clerk. Then I can ask him/or her what is this game called?

Gotta love it when Mark goes really berserk in a review!!!
Mushi is the Japanese word for Bug or Insect, and Hime means Princess. "Sama" is a title of respect. Futari could be translated as "Duo". So the title essentially translates to Bug Princess Duo.
been playing this game for a while now. was pleasantly surprised to see it here! love the review! it really is a great game!
I love how crazy old-school shooters like this have so much happening on screen they manage to lag even an XBox360.
This game is really good. Get a copy while you still can if you can find it online. There are few more multi region Cave shooters. They're Espgaluda 2 and 2game combo Mushi pork and Pink sweets. Last one is harder to get.

I remember my first day on the internet too son.
I noticed that was a platinum hits box. Has this really sold over a million copies?
Actually some of the slowdown is not intentional... which is why they "fixed" some of the slowdown in Deathsmiles. The rest of the slowdown is induced intentionally by overloading the system.
Don't forget Deathsmiles, Dodonpachi Resurrection (Daifukkatsu) and Akai Katana Shin! Luckily, you don't have to import Deathsmiles if you're in the USA. With Dodonpachi and Akai Katana though, you'll have to import it from the EU region. (Also region free)
For the first time, I hit the transcript button on a video. It's fantastic.
I've been waiting for a review for this game. This is my favorite 360 game.
Mark, are you selling the Edison cylinder?
Of course I've played them. I have both this, akai katana, deathsmiles, dodonpachi resurrection on various formats. If you mostly don't move around alot, you don't get hit, and most of the games reward you for straying close to the bullets aswell. When you die, you were just in the wrong spot at the wrong time.
Bought this for the iPad a year ago. Still play it. Fucking kick ass game.. ;)
>in b4 "lawl, I read Futanari"
Still waiting for CGR to release a soundtrack!
Everyone knows what a Cave shootem up is. You fly a little ship/person/robot, weave through thousands of bullets in set patterns, and score lots of points earning multipliers is various ways. Mark doesn't have to tell us how it works.
I love Mark. He made me appreciate El Caminos...even more.
Yeah I have a sealed copy, but I think i'm gonna buy the budget copy and sell the original if the price raises in a year or two
An iron eagle reference? Damnit Chappy!I love mark for this...like a brother.
Yeah, the English name on the Apple store is Bug Princess 2
These shmups are the main reason I got a 360...btw, these cave shmups are pretty good on iPad too, although no icade support :(
I guess the next review is going to be for Gynoug, or maybe the Wii U vs Sega Dreamcast episode
2:42, what is that thing Mark's using?
The developer Cave Inc. made games like this Dodonpachi series, Deathsmiles, & an alternate version of Mushihimesama (Bug Panic)
I tried to get this game on PSP but I found out that it was only sold in Japan :(
7:22
Well, you're wrong about Deathsmiles 2 being released in Europe, for some reason, Cave forgot that the company has fans in the european region as well. You're right about everything else tho. And the company with the red star is called Rising Star Games.
but the real question is... does it play in the vertrex?
To be honest, if you asked me 6 months ago, I wouldnt have had any clue what a Cave shooter was, so I'd have to agree with the earlier poster that a little more info about gameplay systems could be nice.

Cave are the only studio that are making commerical shmups aren't they? I mean, most shmups today are from the doujin scene.
Hey, even CAVE themselves can't get the name right, that's why the BLACK LABEL DLC is called "HUTARI" in the marketplace. Be sure to get that if you get this game, Black Label is awesome.
Only afew select games are the others are region locked. You got to know which are which I guess but looking it up when you find a game.
It refers to the 2 main character of the game (boy and girl). It's the second game in the series, the first one only have the girl.
Did Mark actually reference Iron Eagle?!
And THAT is why CGR is so f***in awesome!!!!
Mark, could you review Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch?
is this the game that teaches you how to dodge raindrops ?
Great game and I would kill for the prequel Mushihimisama HD + DLC to be localised to PAL.
It's region free import only same as many other Japanese shmups. Just google the platinum hits version from Play Asia, it'll only cost you £25.
sounds sick i'll see if i can download it
Mark from Antioch California.. That's like 5 minutes away from where i don't live.
Wasn't it about the "Bug Princess"?
Well technically, they're called 'postpositions' in Japanese, since they come after adjective.
But you're right, it's not an actual sentence. Then again, neither is "2001: A Space Odyssey". Titles don't have to make sense. I just took the words and made it sound as cool as possible... Even though it'd probably sound like gibberish.

The game musics is awesome!
The first game is called Espaluga or something.
Well...there's Jamestown. Pretty good shooter.
They interviewed him, just look up Mohamed from Quatar interview cgr
how can you play iron eagle mode without the support of louis gossett jr?
love it when mark just rambles bout how great the name marc is xD
The only thing that sucks is that it didn't get a western release, its just region free.
Ok, I was just explaining to that guy that "futari" doesn't mean "the second", it means "two people" or "the second person". I.E. it is specific to counting people.
I have BP2 on my ipad, works wonderfully.
Wooot. Shout out to mark for representing Antioch.
Cave shooters - awesome.
will i be able to play this on my pal 360
Mushihimesama Futari also know as Insect Princess Duo.
Antioch, California? :D That's my childhood hometown!
Mark is the only game reviewer I watch.
