Saw Klaus at NYCC yesterday and thanked him for doing this shoot interview. I mentioned how getting someone like him to take the time to discuss things at length, as opposed to 5 minute interviews that always ask the same questions is really valuable. He seemed genuinely appreciative and said that the channel is one of the best on TH-cam.
the page he speaks of was always the one that stuck out for me when I first read DK. Decades later, reading it again, it still is the strongest page in terms of storytelling.
Hell yea!! I say it almost every video but you guys always bringin the heat!! Any Comics fan not watching your channel is seriously messin up! Got Darrow, Janson, all we need now is that other dude they worked with ;) I'm holdin out hope he'll do it! #FrankMillershoot
I met Klaus Janson at a signing in Erie about five years ago and he was so nice! I got his first art job (Jungle Action 6, first Killmonger) signed and he was amazed that it looked so new, and I got to tell him the effect a mid 70s Daredevil had on me as a child. We talked for a while! There are so many comics with his art that I bought as a kid and I was really surprised when I pulled things out to get signed. He’s done so much! And btw, the issue that Frank & Klaus threw together was #167. Roger McKenzie was going to make 167-168 the drug issues, and Miller was going to introduce Elektra in 169; but since the whole Code debacle, the two parter was delayed and reworked into #183-184.
I think I met Janson at the same signing. One of the nicest, most genial pros I've met. I felt like he was just excited to talk to me as I was to talk to him.
Can you imagine? In a parallel universe, that girl didn't felt sorry for a boy wearing a tie and we missed someone who would correct and finish the Frank Miller's work. There should be a statue to that woman in the DC offices and each of us should send her a dollar every year.
Besides being one of the all time best artists / inkers ever - he is also one of the nicest people in comics!! Back in the 1980’s when I thought about trying to break into comics - I found his phone number from information and just called him up cold - and he was totally cool with it! ( though I eventually got into sales instead - found out I would be better paid to talk instead of to draw - plus I was probably better at that lol) I reached out to Klaus for advice - and he was always unbelievably helpful and incredibly generous with his time - to a complete stranger! You just never see that- ever! In fact - one time when i went to his apartment in the village to show him some samples - I saw a very cool original page on his drawing board and I asked him about it. He told me it was a new project he was working on with Frank Miller that seemed like it would really be something special - Well - turned out it was from “ The Dark Knight Returns!” ( if I recall - I think it was the taxi cab scene when Batman’s foot appears on the roof!) So yep - he was sure right about that one, wasn’t he? It was definitely really something special! Amazing legendary artist - and a super classy very nice man!
I like Klaus Janson. Dudes one of the best inkers in the business and it blew my mind to see Frank Millers Daredevil roughs (Miller admitted that it was Chickenscratch) and how Janson managed to bring it all to life. Plus he just seems like a nice chill dude
What a phenomenal interview. 3 for 3 since coming back. Always something to learn. Let's get serious. When are we going to see some Berserk, by Kentaro Miura?
This was amazing , a ton of information... Klaus is definitely on my top 10 list...Thank u again gentlemen. Keep on giving us content and information...BRAVO!
Man! You guys are landing the BEST people for these recent shoot interviews! It must be an honor for you all to talk with these legends and it's such a treat for us to watch and listen. Thank you Jim, Ed and Tom for all the work you do on the page and on the Kayfabe channel. By the way, the EC Covers Artist's Edition dropped this week and it's incredible.
1:35:40 Was it just me or did everyone paused and returned de video many times to absorb every inch we can of this studio? So amazing. Huge thanks to all of you -- especially Klaus, for his generosity and kindness! This is the best TH-cam channel ever. I learn so much with every single video! ❤
Been catching Janson's work off and on thru my comics journey, and i always figured him to be this real turtleneck and crew cut Sprockets type dude from the name, never saw or heard him til now, and he seems like the type of creator you could sit down with a bottle of scotch and listen to and learn from for hours. He seems like such a down to earth dude for such a legendary inking style I've been seeing since childhood.
28:15 Klause; “Do you guys want to hear this?” Tom, Jim, Ed: “Yes!!Yes!! We want to hear it all!!” Words every Kayfaber was screaming :D What an interview!
Excellent interview from a Master of the craft!!! It just spotlights my suspicions that 80's 90's comic art "break-in" was for east coasters, we had NO resources here in the south. PEACE Family of the Inkwell.
Kraus Janson has earned the right to babble all day long! He was at the heart beat during the Bronze Age! I loved his ink work, if my memory serves me correctly he also did some ink work for Sal Buscema on the Defenders run ( the only time Sal’s art looked good). I was so thrilled to view this video on one my all-time favorite artist! Thanks guys!
you know I was invested when Klaus says do you want to hear this story and I yell YES. thanks for the interview awesome. and how can I not love him his from my hometown Bport
Absolutely love the channel and the shoot videos. The selection and talent you guys get is incredible. As a non wrestling fan y’all have me brushing up on shop talk. Keep up the great work!
Excellent interview, guys! Big YES on recoloring Dark Knight Return! I’m going down to Baltimore this month and I finally get to meet Klaus! He’s inked a lot artists over his career! I say this helluva lot but you guys are gd point with every video! Thanks and keep reading & making comic!
These latest Shoot Interviews have been awesome! This is my favorite yet! I stumbled across some new Janson work in a book called Passive Aggressive, which came out over the summer. It follows the title story in front without a hint, so it was a complete surprise. You can catch Klaus experimenting with digital techniques.
As always you guys are hitting it out of the park with these shoot interviews. I was wondering how you guys decide who to talk to. I'm pretty sure you all get suggestions all the time, but I was wondering if guys would ever talk to someone like Don Bluth? Hear me out, I know it's Cartoonist Kayfabe , but like Liefeld, McFarlane, here's a guy that got fed up and did his own thing. Eventually becoming the hottest thing for a while. Just a passing fancy. Thanks and keep up the good work. By the way I didn't know that Janson was a teacher. Damn what an interview!!!
We're getting closer to that Frank Miller interview. When you get it, your only way to top it will be by delving into some serious black arts stuff and start resurrecting the old legends.
The reason why Knightfall keeps getting residuals for Klaus. Is because DC is way smarter than Marvel when it comes to doing collected editions for their most popular characters. DC knows that their most popular character is Batman, they also know that it will make DC a lot of money if they always keep Batman’s most iconic or defining moments in print. Books like Knightfall, A Death in the Family, Killing Joke, Year One, DKR, The Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale books all fall into this category. It’s the one thing DC definitively does better than Marvel, because Marvel can’t keep anything classic or not in print to save their life. Like Ditko’s Spider-Man is only two trades and yet they only get reprinted once every 8 years. Frank Miller’s Daredevil run in trade and omnibus would always sell on name recognition alone and yet Marvel refuses to keep it in print even though they can afford to and it would also make them bank.
Why would Knightfall keep getting reprinted, and being homaged/ripped-off in new comics, and adapted into other media, I wonder. It's only one of the best Batman stories ever.
Klaus is such an excellent human being and an incredible talent. You guys did a spectacular job with this, great questions, and very entertaining!

He signed one of his Punisher pages for me and was extremely easy to chat with. Really lovely person

Klaus, about to relay a story about Frank Miller and Dark Knight:
“Do you guys want to hear this?”
Ed, Jim, Tom:
“YES!”
Love it! Lol
the page he speaks of was always the one that stuck out for me when I first read DK. Decades later, reading it again, it still is the strongest page in terms of storytelling.
I mentally heard myself vocalizing “Yes! We want to hear it all” in unison with you guys.
DUDE when he was giving his love to you guys at the end, I teared up a bit. Klaus Janson, NICE!
Hell yea!! I say it almost every video but you guys always bringin the heat!! Any Comics fan not watching your channel is seriously messin up! Got Darrow, Janson, all we need now is that other dude they worked with ;) I'm holdin out hope he'll do it! #FrankMillershoot

These shoot interviews are pure gold, and this is another one of the great interviews.
Fantastic interview all around. I could listen to Klaus talk all day.
“If your page sucks, it’s because of you.” Klaus is a real one
I like Klaus Janson. Dudes one of the best inkers in the business and it blew my mind to see Frank Millers Daredevil roughs (Miller admitted that it was Chickenscratch) and how Janson managed to bring it all to life. Plus he just seems like a nice chill dude
That was easily the best Klaus interview ever. You guys are killin' it. Keep it up.
What a phenomenal interview. 3 for 3 since coming back. Always something to learn.
Let's get serious. When are we going to see some Berserk, by Kentaro Miura?
Awesome and humble man, I loved his Penciling and Inking books growing up!

I watch this regularly. The man knows his stuff and talks nothing but sense when it comes to being an artist. Wonderful.

24:15 To Storytell...but also to Entertain! Yes!
that was terrific!!
@7:37. Oh YES!!!
Awesome! Free SVA CLASS! Love it
Is Connecticut the hidden mecca of comics?
A legend
“ I can feel the breath of mortality on my neck. “
Legend!
I was today-years-old when I learned that his name is pronounced Klaus (rhymes with "HOUSE"), not Klaus (as in Santa).
The Man!!
What’s that book 3 minutes in?!
"It's about you and your page..." "You have to accept responsibility for this page" That's some BIG stuff. That's everything, really.
Oh, snap!
We're getting closer to that Frank Miller interview. When you get it, your only way to top it will be by delving into some serious black arts stuff and start resurrecting the old legends.
1:23:00 I loved Janson inks on Gene Colan. I thought he was the best. Surprising that he thinks he never nailed it.
A machine

Stop it… just stop it! I don’t have enough time to watch all this brilliant crap 🤣
Why would Knightfall keep getting reprinted, and being homaged/ripped-off in new comics, and adapted into other media, I wonder. It's only one of the best Batman stories ever.
Klaus is awesome. McFarlane keeps proving his douche status with each new story.
Didnt he work on some Gambit comi
