  • The 12.5-kilometre (7.8 mi) line runs between Mendoza and General Gutierrez in Maipú, on 1,435 mm (4 ft 8 1⁄2 in) standard gauge double-track rail. The Metrotranvía of Mendoza serves the metropolitan area of Mendoza, which includes the departments of Las Heras, Central district, Godoy Cruz, Maipú and Luján de Cuyo. Service operates from 6:00 to 22:00. The line has been named the Línea Verde, or Green Line. The line operates on the right-hand side as its former U.S. light rail rolling stock is configured, in contrast to the left-handed operation of the majority of the Argentine railway network. ~Wikipedia

    Had the pleasure of visiting Argentina a few years ago. After an all night bus ride from Buenos Aires I arrived in Mendoza. Beautiful city right beside the Andes. Great food and excellent wine. I missed the trams by a couple of years though.

    As someone who took the trolley for so many years in San Diego, this is bittersweet. But I'm glad they were given new life so that others could make use of them.

    Mendoza bought 31 of San Diego's original cars plus 4 for parts sources. 36 are left in San Diego, reportedly at an equipment brokerage. Officials in Knoxville, Tennessee had ideas for a light rail line using 18 of the remaining San Diego cars, but Tennessee legislators filed a bill to prohibit any rail transit development in Knoxville.
    N.b. one other car is at the Rockhill trolley museum in Pennsylvania.

      The length of cars delivered to Frankfurt is 23.0 meters plus coupler (24.3 m or 80 ft).
      In the beginning every car was equiped with fixed tread steps in order to operate at low platforms.

    At least they didn’t do something like add a low-floor section.

    • @Lucius_Chiaraviglio
      @Lucius_Chiaraviglio 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Adding a low-floor section the way Dallas did would not necessarily be a bad idea, and all of the track shown in the video was on flat terrain, so this should work fine, except that the acceleration would be a bit slow.
      On another retrofit note, I noticed that at least car 1007 had digital destination signs, even though most of the cars had either fixed route signs or roll signs (couldn't tell which).
      Also stumbled upon the fact that they have an electric trolleybus system which had some ex-Vancouver units for a while, although those are now out of service, and the system is down to just 1 line (after temporarily being at 0): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trolleybuses_in_Mendoza.
      Mendoza is a large city -- they really merit more electric service than just 1 light rail line and 1 trolleybus line.

    • @RRansomSmith
      @RRansomSmith 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The way these cars are built, they can't do that. Each section shares a bogie so if another section is added, they'd have to get 2 bogies which adds weight and has to work with the rest of the car's systems.

    • @Lucius_Chiaraviglio
      @Lucius_Chiaraviglio 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rick Traveler Smith That's what Dallas (DART) actually did: th-cam.com/video/BWhVvjkq1ng/w-d-xo.html -- the 3 section, 4 bogie cars with the low-floor sections in the middle used to be 2 section(*), 3 bogie cars. Also see www.dart.org/factsheet/SLRV/ -- they said they were going to rebuild all 115 DART LRVs, but I don't know whether they actually finished with all of them. The Wikipedia page en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DART_Light_Rail has photos of both pre-rebuild and post-rebuild DART LRVs, but unfortunately doesn't give much explanation, which is why I also posted the previous link.
      (*) The center bogie may technically be an extremely short section like on MBTA Type 7 cars, but this is so much shorter than the center section on an MBTA Type 8 that it is not normally counted as a section, although it does have a small circle of associated floor inside. Not sure if the DART cars had exactly the same layout as an MBTA Type 7 before they were rebuilt as noted above, but since they were both Kinki-Sharyo products, it is a good chance (and even the USSLRVs, the predecessors of the Type 7s, had this feature).
      The MBTA did not rebuild its Type 7s this way in part because cars rebuilt this way would have really severe trouble making it up the hills (especially on Commonwealth Avenue), since they do not have provision for traction motors in the center bogie and would not be easily modified to send power to the extra bogie (unlike a hypothetical new light rail vehicle built this way from the start). But the light rail lines both Dallas and Mendoza are really flat, so no problem in those places, other than somewhat worse acceleration.

    Congratz on 10 years! As a fellow transit fan, I have a lot of respect for your channel, let alone the time that you put into capturing such varied systems from around the world. Keep up the great work!
    It seems that Mendoza sure knows how to recycle transit infrastructure as our (Vancouver, Canada) system, TransLink, sent them our 1982/83-built trolley buses back in 2008 when we renewed the fleet:
    buzzer.translink.ca/2008/10/retired-trolleys-set-sail-for-argentina
    I'd love to see if they're still running out there, though I'm not holding my breath as they already had may miles on them at the time. I must say that I do love to see some of San Diego's trains have such a great retirement and evade the scrappers to live another day. I guess that my transit spotting eyes are better than I thought because as soon as I saw the thumbnail for this video, I knew that those red cars had to be from San Diego.
